Luken

Luken is an old deer demon whose alliance with the Li family grew from a search for medicinal fruit. His caution reflects centuries spent seeking protection from stronger demons, while his Lingyun Wood foundation makes him useful as a healer and intermediary with plants. (Chapters 494–495, 501–503, 1464)

Biography

Protection and cooperation

Luken survived the destruction of the Mushroom Forest Demon Den by moving to Mount Dali, where a friend protected him for centuries. After that friend died attempting Purple Mansion advancement, Luken sought release as a demon general rather than risk being eaten within the den. White Banyan introduced him to Li Yuanjiao, and Luken tried to establish goodwill through gifts before agreeing to search for Blood Sun Fruit. His long memory also gave Yuanjiao an account of Li Jiangqun's destruction that differed from the usual story of a united three sects and seven gates. Cooperation offered Luken another source of security after the loss of his old protector. (Chapters 494–495)

When his contacts found a tiger demon with the fruit, Luken brought Li Qinghong to Quanwu. He had checked that the target lacked important backing, then used conversations with trees to locate it after it moved caves. Although he proposed killing the tiger if possible, its resistance frightened him; Qinghong instead obtained the fruit and left a relationship that might produce further supplies. Luken was struck by her ability to turn an enemy into a useful contact and recognized that he had much to learn despite his age. (Chapters 501–503)

White Banyan's later rise improved Luken's standing. He arranged Zhouwei's meeting with the fox and treated Zhouwei as the White Qilin rather than merely a junior of his human allies. After Zhouwei attained divine ability, Luken left the northern foothills, explaining that demons without the Li surname or scales feared remaining within the Qilin's sphere of authority. Still deferential, he guided Zhouwei to Mount Dali's master. His continuing relationship with the Li family therefore depended on navigating both personal familiarity and the hierarchy governing demon lineages. (Chapters 976, 1464)

Appearance and personality

He first appears as a middle-aged man with a small face, round eyes and yellowish-brown hair left from his deer transformation. Polite and cautious, he does not eat humans and prefers cooperation with powerful neighbors. (Chapters 494–495)

Abilities and cultivation

Luken cultivates Lingyun Wood, which he describes as supporting healing, qi control, spirit-plant cultivation, earth-vein nurturing and transformation into plants. He demonstrates communication with trees and makes persimmon fruits move and speak while tracking the tiger demon. He can manifest large antlers and travel on demonic wind; in combat he wields an ax, but lacks Qinghong's confidence against the tiger. The Purple Essence Dao he later names as governing deer-kind is distinct from his stated personal Lingyun Wood foundation. (Chapters 501–503, 1464)
