Jiang Boqing
Jiang Boqing is a shamanic cultivator whose dealings with Azure Pond Sect help sustain the devil plague in Yue State. He abducts Li Yuanyu, renames him Jiang Yan, and raises him in curse techniques, combining calculated cruelty with a final determination to protect his disciple. (Chapters 162, 362–363)
Biography
A manufactured apprenticeship and a final refusal
Boqing has already abandoned the conventional Purple Mansion Golden Core Dao for a shamanic method when he takes the young Li Yuanyu from the bloodshed in Lixia Prefecture. He gives the unwilling child his own surname and begins teaching him curses. The apprenticeship is embedded in a larger bargain: Boqing and Azure Pond Sect exchange interests through the devil plague, while blood qi and resentment qi accumulated at sect strongholds conveniently reach Jiang Yan as resources for advancement. Boqing later admits the arrangement and his closeness to Chi Buzi. His disciple’s apparently successful attacks on the sect have therefore been cultivated by the same powers he believes he is opposing. (Chapters 162, 362)
After Duanmu Kui’s death and the loss of the immortal text Answers to a Beggar’s Questions Under the Mulberry Tree, Boqing has no secure route forward. He takes over a Blood Drinker cultivator’s body, ostensibly while looking for a better foundation, but his metallic essence is damaged beyond repair and steadily destroys its temporary host. Jiang Yan discovers the deception and fears that the Three Nine True Talisman and Shamanic Blood Talisman his teacher nurtured within him are preparations for possession. Boqing admits his own condition and the staged supply of cultivation resources, but denies intending to seize his disciple: he says the failing body now serves only to protect Jiang Yan until he can send him away. The confession cannot immediately repair a relationship founded on coercion and concealment. (Chapters 315, 362)
Qing Jifang interrupts their confrontation, clears away Boqing’s hope of escaping the True Monarchs watching his knowledge of the immortal book, and accuses him of enticing Jiang Yan’s father and killing his mother to create the disciple’s talismans. Offered survival through memory extraction and reincarnation in that disciple’s body, Boqing appears to agree only long enough to send Jiang Yan away himself. He then explodes his host body and drives metallic essence into Jifang while sealing the surrounding void, preferring destruction to surrendering the book’s clues to Wu State. Jiang Yan reaches Yi Mountain City almost drained of cultivation by the journey and mourns his teacher’s death, preserving the contradiction between the man who engineered his suffering and the man who finally saved him. (Chapters 363, 375)
Appearance and personality
He first presents himself as a middle-aged man with a dark, callous humor, unmoved by a child’s terror. His later possessed body has wild hair and a hoarse voice, with blood and strips of flesh falling from its face as it deteriorates. He is proud of his ingenuity and ruthless in manipulating others, yet his gentle admission to Jiang Yan and refusal to hand him over reveal an attachment that survives the ruin of his plans. (Chapters 162, 362–363)
Abilities and cultivation
Seeking emptiness to create talismans
A legacy from a predecessor of Moonlight Origin Mansion teaches Boqing to treat life divine abilities as talismans and turn his cultivation and Dao foundation into an immortal talisman, changing from the Golden Core Dao to the Shamanic Talisman Dao. He attributes his success to earlier pursuit of the Supreme Shaman’s Three Nine Blood Essence, whose connection with talismans prepared him for the method. His later damaged metallic essence cannot be repaired by ordinary talismans or seals; the transformation does not grant an unlimited ability to acquire new foundations or rebuild himself. (Chapter 362)
Blood arts, temporary possession, and metallic essence
Appearing as a black serpent, Boqing makes a Blood Drinker cultivator’s dark red mana flow toward him and then occupies the man’s body. He explains that his abandoned blood cultivation still exceeds the victim’s incomplete practice, but taking a Foundation Establishment body requires his disciple to stand guard. Blood Drinker keeps the host from immediately dissolving under metallic essence erosion; without matching methods or special elixirs, its eventual collapse remains inevitable. He can also break a divine ability’s influence on Jiang Yan with a shout. His final use of metallic essence takes control of Jifang’s light, carries Jiang Yan far away, and seals the void around his enemy, at the cost of his remaining life and much of the disciple’s energy. (Chapters 315, 362–363, 375)
Relationships
- Li Yuanyu / Jiang Yan: Abducted disciple whose development Boqing secretly engineers, then protects in his final act. (Chapters 162, 362–363)
- Chi Buzi: Sect associate tied to his admitted collaboration in the devil plague. (Chapter 362)
- Qing Jifang: Enemy seeking his memories and the immortal book’s clues; target of his final attack. (Chapter 363)
Items
Answers to a Beggar’s Questions Under the Mulberry Tree is the lost immortal text central to his knowledge and persecution, not a book he still carries during his final flight. The Three Nine True Talisman and Shamanic Blood Talisman are nurtured in Jiang Yan’s body; their importance does not make the disciple Boqing’s property. The black gourd taken from the Blood Drinker victim is collected and used by Jiang Yan. (Chapters 315, 362–363)
