Deng Qiuzhi

Deng Qiuzhi is an Azure Pond disciple and close friend of Li Chejing. The Deng Family’s special constitution makes him a target of the sect’s coercive pill-refining arrangements with a southern demon king. (Chapters 87, 128)

Biography

Friendship under a sentence of refinement

Qiuzhi’s relationship with Chejing begins awkwardly after one of his followers injures the young cultivator. He apologizes with ointments and escorts, then privately bullies the follower while worrying about the grudge he may have created. In Yi Mountain City, the two become companions facing a much greater common threat. Qiuzhi notices that beast tides withdraw at suspiciously convenient moments and explains the role forced on his bloodline: each generation must practice a secret technique so that cultivators can be refined into human pills for exchange with the demon king. He recognizes that the sect’s apparently beneficial supplies are preparing their bodies for this purpose. Escape would expose their families to punishment, leaving him angry and increasingly drawn to drink. (Chapters 52, 87, 98)

Chejing’s willingness to seek a way forward gives Qiuzhi some hope, but the powers overseeing the city prevent rebellion. He witnesses Chejing’s Sword Intent emerge in the confrontation with Chi Zhiyun, only for a Purple Mansion cultivator to take both men to the demon king. Qiuzhi is judged suitable because he is a young Qi cultivator who has mastered the secret technique; the demon wounds his chest and throws him into the furnace beside Chejing. His death becomes an enduring wound for his younger brother Yuzhi, who later insists that the loss of an obscure cultivator matters as deeply to a family as the loss of a celebrated sword immortal. (Chapters 127–128, 1261)

Appearance and personality

Qiuzhi’s manner shifts from anxious pride and bullying to bitter candor once he recognizes his predicament. His sarcasm and drinking express despair, while his concern for Chejing persists even when he cannot share the other man’s optimism. (Chapters 52, 87, 98)

Abilities and cultivation

A coerced secret technique

Qiuzhi reaches Qi Cultivation before thirty and masters the special method forced on Deng descendants. Its established consequence is suitability for the sect’s human-pill refinement scheme; that suitability is not a voluntary talent he uses against enemies. The sect’s long-acting medicines further prepare the intended ingredients. He carries a sword and dharma beads, but no demonstrated combat power lets him resist the Purple Mansion escort or demon king. (Chapters 87, 127–128)

Relationships

  • Li Chejing: Friend and fellow captive in the furnace.
  • Deng Yuzhi: Younger brother whose later grief keeps Qiuzhi’s personal significance alive.
  • Chi Zhiyun: Oversees the confrontation before the captives’ removal. (Chapters 87, 127–128, 1261)

Items

Qiuzhi gives Chejing ointments after their first encounter. His sword and dharma beads accompany his sect life, but the medicines supplied by the sect are part of the preparations for human-pill refinement rather than a safeguard against it. (Chapters 52, 87, 127)
