Chi Zhiyun
Chi Zhiyun rises to lead Azure Pond Sect, but his family’s history of coercion leaves him with a difficult legacy to manage. Later testimony credits him with easing the harm done to the Deng Family before he is killed during the destruction of the Chi clan. (Chapters 199, 1260–1261, 1289)
Biography
A proud swordsman accepts a fair defeat
As a young sect cultivator, Zhiyun faces Li Chejing in a spar and tries to answer the younger man’s swordsmanship with his own sword, Foundation-level fire spells, a crimson barrier, and talisman shields. Chejing’s Celestial Moon Sword Intent pierces the barrier and breaks through the shields but passes Zhiyun without cutting him. Zhiyun is left pale and astonished by the gap in their skill; years later, when his family uses the loss to justify hostility toward the Li Family, he insists Chejing defeated him fairly. Zhiyun rises to sect master and reaches the middle stage of Foundation Establishment. (Chapters 127–128, 199, 699, 131)
Governing under the weight of Chi family abuses
As sect master, Zhiyun confronts the damage caused by Chi Wei and the family’s inherited coercive practices. When his younger brother Zhiyan defends further schemes against the Li Family, Zhiyun rebukes him and refuses to pretend Chejing’s earlier victory was dishonorable. Deng Yuzhi later says Zhiyun intervened to ease the Chi Family’s forced cultivation method, after which the Deng descendants stopped practicing it; the family remembers him as someone who tried to make amends. Though early reports attribute his death to a failed breakthrough, Zhiyun was dragged from his cave and killed as the Chi Family was exterminated. (Chapters 699–700, 1251, 1260–1261, 1289)
Appearance and personality
Zhiyun is introduced in flowing robes with a sword at his side. He is proud of his swordsmanship and cultivation, but after Chejing’s decisive spar he acknowledges the other cultivator’s skill. As sect master he can be calculating in political dealings, yet later testimony also credits him with restraint and attempts to repair harm. (Chapters 127–128, 735, 1251)
Abilities and cultivation
Zhiyun reaches the middle stage of Foundation Establishment and is known as the Flaming Phoenix Sword. In the spar with Chejing, he uses sword qi, a dozen Foundation-level fire spells, a crimson barrier formed with a dragon-patterned pearl, and layers of golden talisman shields. Chejing’s sword intent cuts through his defense, demonstrating the limit of these methods against superior swordsmanship. (Chapters 127–128, 131, 199)
