Chi Zhiyan

Chi Zhiyan uses his standing in Azure Pond Sect to pressure neighboring clans, then leads Chi forces into a disastrous standoff at Mount Bianyan. His factional choices strain his relationship with his elder brother, Chi Zhiyun, and ultimately cost him his life. (Chapters 295, 699–700, 881–882)

Biography

Turning sect authority into leverage against the lakeside families

As head disciple of Yuanwu Peak and a direct Chi descendant, Zhiyan is sent to summon families around Moongaze Lake for service at Yi Mountain City. He tells Yu Mugao that the Li Family is unlikely to return and will not protect every rival clan, then encourages him to create disorder while warning him not to kill Li Tongya or Fei Wangbai. The advice uses Yu’s fear and resentment to advance Chi interests without inviting the sect into a direct fight; it also leaves Yu unsettled enough that Zhiyan later tells him to stop practicing the Aged Courtly Path Scripture. (Chapters 294–296)

Defying his brother, then misjudging the battle at Mount Bianyan

Years later, Zhiyan supports schemes against the Li Family and insists that the Chi clan’s hostility is the ancestor’s fault when Chi Zhiyun rebukes him. Zhiyun presses him to take responsibility, while Zhiyan’s own ambition to reach Purple Mansion makes him unwilling to risk his life in a dangerous assignment. He later gathers Chi forces at Mount Bianyan to hold the position, but enemy pressure traps them there. As his talismans and storage pouch become unusable and his mana runs dry, he realizes he should have abandoned the riverbank earlier; Xuwang’s palm strike pierces his chest and shatters his face. (Chapters 699–700, 881–882)

Appearance and personality

Zhiyan resembles Chi Zhiyun, but his dark expression and narrowed features are described as more sinister and cunning. His willingness to manipulate Yu Mugao contrasts with his reluctance to accept personal danger when the Chi family’s conflict turns against them. (Chapters 295, 699–700)

Abilities and cultivation

Zhiyan aspires to reach the Purple Mansion Realm, but his actual realm at death is unknown. At Mount Bianyan he fights with a longsword, protective dharma robe, talismans, and stored pills; Yu Jiang’s spells prevent him from using his pouch, and his remaining mana is exhausted before Xuwang kills him. No individual named combat technique is known. (Chapters 700, 882)

  • Yu Mugao: Zhiyan pressures and advises him as a means of stirring conflict around Moongaze Lake. (Chapters 295–296)
  • Li Chejing: Zhiyan expects Chejing’s absence to leave the Li Family exposed, but Zhiyun insists that Chejing defeated him fairly and that the family should not keep scheming against the Lis. (Chapters 295, 699)

Items

At Mount Bianyan Zhiyan carries a longsword, a dharma robe, talismans, pills, and a storage pouch. His final opponents disrupt or prevent their use; their later custody is unknown. (Chapter 882)
