Ahuici
Ahuici is an Ahui tribal leader who becomes a veteran Li retainer after his failed raid on Lichuankou. His experience among the Mount Yue tribes later makes him useful to the family he once attacked. (Chapters 78–81, 277)
Biography
From tribal raider to senior retainer
Forced south by Jianixi’s expansion, Ahuici leads a diminished community to Big Fish Creek and seeks supplies through violence. He captures and interrogates Li villagers, but Li resistance destroys his confidence: an arrow kills his shaman, and Li Tongya overwhelms him when the soldiers surround his people. Ahuici surrenders rather than sacrifice the remainder of his tribe. Li Xiangping confines and questions him, then offers his people agricultural work in exchange for returning the plunder and accepting Li authority. Defeat thus changes his position from independent raider to dependent leader whose people can survive through cooperation. (Chapters 78–81)
Ahuici proves useful by rallying familiar tribes and explaining Jianixi’s growing military power. His adoption of Lijing clothing accompanies a stronger identification with the Lis, whom he addresses through Xiangping’s title of Great King. He also participates in the family’s westward fighting, repeatedly saving Tian Youdao. In old age he remains a sharp-eyed high shaman around Shamoli’s court: he throws the insolent Tian Rong out of Shamoli’s carriage and insists that preparations proceed. His authority now rests as much on long service and personal obligations as on cultivation, which can no longer advance because of his age. (Chapters 86, 103, 277)
Appearance and personality
Initially marked by facial tattoos and tribal ornaments, Ahuici later wears a fur coat in the Lijing style. Age brings white hair and wrinkles without dulling his forceful manner. His rough treatment of Tian Rong reflects both his impatience with insolence and his seniority over the younger man’s father. (Chapters 78, 86, 277)
Abilities and cultivation
Shamanic cultivation and tribal leadership
Ahuici begins at the fourth stage of Embryonic Breathing and fights with paired sledgehammers, but cannot contend with Li Tongya. He eventually reaches the realm’s peak; his advanced age prevents further breakthrough. His more durable contribution is practical knowledge of Mount Yue leadership, movements, and tribal allegiances, which helps Xiangping organize allies against Jianixi. (Chapters 78, 80, 86, 277)
Relationships
- Li Xiangping: Conquers him and turns him into an experienced retainer.
- Tian Youdao: Owes him several rescues and respectfully calls him elder brother.
- Shamoli: Accepts his blunt directions as a senior high shaman. (Chapters 81, 277)
Items
Ahuici carries paired sledgehammers during his resistance to Tongya. His early beast-fang and jade ornaments give way to clothing associated with his new Li allegiance. (Chapters 78, 80, 86)
