Sarota
Sarota is a DarkStar captain who commands the fleet sent to recover a stolen Secret Message Bead and suppress the mercenaries investigating it. His escalation against the mercenary community ends when Ames destroys his fleet and Godora sends him alive to Rainbow Prison.
Biography
The Black Star Mercenary Group
Sarota interrogates Peggy alongside Ember, orders a renewed investigation into the missing bead, and has Peggy's crew executed once their deception is exposed. After Ember fails to contain the mercenaries on the planet below, Sarota brings in the mothership, captures some of their allies, and bombards the surface. He initially calculates that nearby Holy Stone and Black Raven forces will remain neutral, but underestimates both Han Xiao's piloting and the solidarity his attack provokes across the mercenary industry. The arrival of a large relief fleet overturns his expected advantage, and Ames's intervention destroys any prospect of escape. Sarota survives the mothership's crash, is bound with his subordinates, and begs to be killed rather than subjected to Rainbow Prison's ideological reconditioning. His captors instead knock him unconscious and transfer him alive through Godoran custody to that prison. Chapter 412's description of Ember as the fleet's only survivor refers to Ember's evasion of capture, not Sarota's death; the same account explicitly preserves Sarota's imprisonment. (Chapters 385, 390–405, and 412)
Appearance and personality
The corpus does not give Sarota a stable physical description. His conduct establishes him as ruthless, calculating, and confident while he controls the mothership: he authorizes executions, accepts collateral damage, and treats neutral military powers as variables in a tactical problem. His composure collapses when Ames appears, at which point he urgently seeks an escape pod and orders the fleet to protect itself. His request for death after capture also shows intense loyalty to DarkStar's cause, or at minimum a profound fear that Rainbow Prison will erase that loyalty through ideological reconditioning. (Chapters 385, 394–405)
Abilities and class
Sarota's demonstrated strengths are command, interrogation, and fleet tactics rather than a defined Super class or personal combat power. He directs a DarkStar mothership and its escorts, coordinates orbital bombardment, evaluates the likely reactions of neutral fleets, and orders retreat when the balance becomes hopeless. These decisions make him dangerous at operational scale, but he repeatedly misjudges factors outside conventional force comparison: mercenary cooperation, Han Xiao's piloting, and Ames's overwhelming personal power. The corpus does not establish a grade or named individual ability for him. (Chapters 385, 390–405)
Relationships
- Ember: Ember is Sarota's field operative during the Secret Message Bead investigation. Sarota escalates to fleet action after Ember fails to contain the mercenaries, while Ember later avoids the mothership's fate by hiding underground.
- Ames: Ames answers the crisis around the mercenaries and destroys Sarota's fleet, causing his capture.
- Han Xiao: Han is one of Sarota's principal targets and repeatedly frustrates the fleet through piloting, planning, and his connections within the mercenary world.
- Goa: Goa is among the mercenaries caught in the conflict created by Sarota's attempt to seize everyone connected to the bead investigation.
- Cerleni: Cerleni's group becomes part of the wider mercenary response that Sarota fails to anticipate.
Items
Sarota commands a DarkStar mothership and its attached fleet, but these are organizational assets rather than his personal property. The mothership is brought down by Ames; its hull crashes without immediately exploding, which allows Sarota and some subordinates to survive long enough to be captured. No named personal item is established for him. (Chapters 394–405)
