Ludwell

Ludwell is a senior Crimson Dynasty official responsible for finance and the head of a neutral political faction. He favors dynasty control of the Evolution Cube, but a debt created when the Black Star Army saves his only grandson leads him to restrain harsher anti-Black Star measures without abandoning that policy.

Biography

The Flickering World

Ludwell advises Urranrell that the dynasty bears the pressure surrounding the Evolutionary Totems while Han Xiao controls their source, and argues that the dynasty should hold the Evolution Cube. During that dispute, four Calamity Grade fugitives attempt to assassinate Ludwell's only grandson on Enya Hub. Black Star Guards rescue the young man and his two bodyguards, prompting Ludwell to thank Han personally and acknowledge a favor. He then warns Bekorodi and uses his economic influence against the Limitless Financial Group, changing his method rather than his underlying position. Later he supports dynasty neutrality in Han's fight with Heber, yet still endorses a separate plan to study or obtain the cube when its projected success appears high. Appearance and personality

Ludwell is an old official with wrinkles at the corners of his eyes and a refined public manner. He is measured enough to stop speaking when Urranrell signals, but fiercely protective of his grandson: after learning of the attack, he dents an alloy desk with his palm and orders an investigation. He distinguishes personal debts from policy and repays Han without pretending that their strategic disagreement has vanished. (Chapters 939 and 942–943)

Ludwell's principal power is political and economic authority within the Crimson Dynasty. Denting an alloy desk demonstrates substantial physical strength, and the narration notes that dynasty officials are not necessarily weak, but it does not supply his combat class, grade, skills, or battlefield record.
