Edraine

Edraine is the original Vualla after she rebuilds her bodily and civic identity and adopts a new name. She is not Vualla Meteo, the younger projected incarnation who fights at the frontlines, and she is not the separate, power-obsessed Vualla-derived mind hosted by Lady Iellaya. As Edraine, she becomes a strategist and destructive image practitioner whose reform coalition challenges the Nexus's treatment of lives as resources. (Chapters 1221, 1459, and 1500–1508)

Biography

Rebuilding the original Vualla as Edraine

The original Vualla awakens as one of three distinct Vualla-derived consciousnesses: she occupies and directs the newest projection's body, the projection retains its own resistant mind, and a power-obsessed counterpart rides within Lady Iellaya. The original uses that divided situation to oppose Ileot and escape the despair that had trapped her, but survival leaves her needing a continuity that is more than another reuse of the same name. Her later bodily resuscitation preserves the original mind while separating its public identity from the other two lives. (Chapter 1221)

She chooses Edraine as that new identity. Abandoning Vualla's old civic identity also costs her prior Nexus citizenship, so her immediate practical goal is Tier III status and a civilian position on the Nexus Council. The change is neither a disguise nor a later stage of the frontline Vualla: Octavius explicitly instructs Randidly to use the new name, and Randidly encounters Edraine as an older, scarred woman with her own mature image and political program. (Chapters 1459 and 1500)

Building a reform coalition around Elhume's body

Edraine joins Octavius Shrike and Lady Iellaya in recruiting Randidly Ghosthound as Head Drill Sergeant for the Fifth Cohort. She contributes hidden force while Iellaya supplies military position and Octavius provides administration. Once Randidly obtains the appointment, Edraine gives him three Coins of Territory as insurance for Expira and states the coalition's common premise: the Nexus must stop treating lives as a resource. She then proposes using the crystallized Aether around Elhume's discarded body to obtain power capable of forcing institutional change. (Chapters 1500–1508)

Her plan assigns each conspirator an independent burden. Randidly must earn citizenship resources through the recruits, Iellaya must become strong enough to survive an attack from Elhume's body, Octavius must develop the necessary Engravings, and Edraine must infiltrate forbidden layers, locate the body, and divert attention. She also shares techniques for expanding an image to a world's scale and studies records with Octavius even as Military High Command cuts off Aether to the Fifth Cohort. Her identity recovery thus becomes organized resistance rather than a private escape from Ileot's projections. (Chapters 1508, 1522, 1544, and 1595)

Breaking the Patrons free and facing Elhume

To gather force outside established Nexus command, Edraine and Velio Dunn attack a Sanctum barrier holding the Patrons. She compresses her normally explosive image against one point for ten sustained minutes, pushing through spasms, burned hands, and the Patron of the Sun's escaping radiance until the barrier tears. The rescue succeeds because her concentrated destruction gives the imprisoned Patron an opening, demonstrating that her strength is not merely political deterrence but a practical instrument for dismantling the Nexus's restraints. (Chapter 1650)

The alliance then confronts Elhume and pays for the attempt. Velio is killed, and Edraine wavers between proving the worth of her refined attacks and fleeing certain death. She chooses to resist, adapts her image to absorb the force of the Boundless fist, and helps escape with the surviving Patrons and Velio's body. Even after Elhume's Timeless attack pursues them, she looks for another refuge instead of dissolving the coalition. The encounter tempers confidence with a direct measure of how far her reform faction remains from the Nexus's central power. (Chapter 1683)

Citizenship, sanctuary, and persistent opposition

Edraine's hidden base becomes infrastructure for allies operating around the Nexus. Randidly uses a portal to return to a safe house she created after his confrontation with Wick, and he later relies on citizenship coins she gathered to reach Tier III. Those resources expose surveillance embedded in the supposedly elevated civic system, reinforcing the coalition's argument that advancement within the Nexus cannot be separated from control. Edraine remains unable to perceive the hidden Biamat observer herself, a practical boundary on both her senses and her protection. (Chapters 1754 and 1857–1859)

Her later role is quieter but not erased. Randidly recognizes Edraine as one of the few allies reliably stronger than emerging Earth champions, while the reform faction's old goals remain relevant as Devick, the Actus Suprem, and the Upper Sonora Society contest control of Grand Fates. Edraine's sustained commitment matters because it belongs specifically to this original Vualla continuity; it does not retroactively make the projected Vualla's choices, or the mind hosted by Iellaya, her own. (Chapters 1847, 1857, and 2250)

The Pine crisis and refuge in the Alpha Cosmos

As Pine falls through the Nexus and the surrounding struggle reaches its terminal crisis, Edraine remains with the Vulpis forces on Randidly's side. The scale of the collapse makes ordinary factional maneuvering irrelevant: Pine consumes significance, Solomon Rex warns of universal destruction, and Randidly begins pulling people out of the exposed region. Edraine does not merge with either of the other Vuallas during this upheaval; she remains the older reformer whose earlier decisions brought her into Randidly's coalition. (Chapters 2250–2266)

Randidly draws Edraine into the Alpha Cosmos alongside the Vulpis Squad, protecting her from the coming storm. His private comparison—that this version of Vualla chose his side when another did not—underscores rather than collapses the identity division. Edraine's last direct movement is therefore a consequence of her own long political alignment: the original consciousness that selected a new name, built a reform conspiracy, fought Elhume, and maintained sanctuary is preserved through the alliance she chose. (Chapter 2266)

Appearance and personality

Edraine looks almost exactly like an older version of Vualla Meteo, but her hair has greyed and a large scar crosses her left eye. Her recurring visual signature is the image behind her: a compact, headless simulacrum sculpted from porcelain and pewter, poised like a perfected artificial tool of destruction. The age, scar, and headless construct distinguish her from the projected Vualla's youthful appearance, azure braid, heavy gauntlets, and frontline identity. (Chapter 1500)

She is strategic, hardened, and deliberate about names and institutions. Edraine can offer genuine sympathy, but she rarely lets danger prevent her from stating the scale of what change will cost. Her plans distribute responsibility rather than reducing allies to attendants, and her declared objection to lives being treated as resources gives those plans a moral center. In battle, fear remains real—especially after Velio's death—but she treats it as a choice point and continues acting. (Chapters 1507–1508 and 1683)

Abilities and progression

Edraine's mature image manifests as a headless porcelain-and-pewter simulacrum, compact enough that its silence and density are more threatening than spectacle. Its central operation is pure kinetic expulsion: destructive force rushes outward with a single-minded drive toward total annihilation. In short applications, that simplicity lets her blast a large area or function as a deterrent whose power Randidly cannot initially imagine fighting. It is an image belonging to the resuscitated original, not an inherited presentation of the projected Vualla's gauntlets. (Chapters 1500 and 1650)

She can also reverse the image's natural tendency to expand by folding successive destructive pulses into a fist-sized focus. This concentrated application creates a cohesive stream capable of worrying and finally tearing a sophisticated Sanctum barrier when combined with Velio's edge and pressure from the Patron of the Sun. The method works best against a fixed target that permits a long buildup; Edraine acknowledges that an ordinary opponent would not stand still while she ratchets up the intensity. (Chapter 1650)

Sustained compression exposes clear limits. After ten minutes, her image spasms like an overworked muscle, her joints creak, her veins swell, and the flesh of her hands burns. Escaping solar radiance overwhelms her until repeated pulses of her own image dislodge the heat and allow her body to recover. Against Elhume, she remains drastically outmatched: his first blows impose paralysis and permanent-destruction pressure, although preparation lets her image absorb much of a later Boundless attack and begin changing in response to the feedback. (Chapters 1650 and 1683)

Outside direct combat, Edraine reads energy flows well enough to make locating Elhume's body and distracting his attention her assigned parts of the conspiracy. She possesses knowledge of older image-physicalization practice, world-scale image expansion, Citizenship Coin combinations, and forbidden Nexus access. These are specialized perception and institutional expertise rather than proof that she can see every hidden layer; the Biamat observer in her base remains invisible to her until Randidly reacts after gaining Tier III citizenship. (Chapters 1507–1508, 1522, and 1859)

Relationships

  • Vualla Meteo: A separate projected incarnation whose body the original consciousness once directed. Edraine shares an origin with her but not a single continuous set of choices or relationships.
  • Lady Iellaya: A reform ally who hosts a different, power-obsessed Vualla-derived mind. Edraine cooperates with Iellaya without claiming that resident consciousness as herself.
  • Randidly Ghosthound: The coalition's compromise military candidate and later ally. Edraine equips his contingency planning, shares Nexus knowledge, and is ultimately sheltered within his Alpha Cosmos.
  • Octavius Shrike: Her political and research partner, who communicates her new identity, sponsors Randidly's appointment, and studies Engravings for the Elhume operation.
  • Velio Dunn: Her partner in breaking the Sanctum barrier. His death during the confrontation with Elhume forces Edraine to choose between flight and continued resistance.

Items

  • Coin of Territory: Edraine gives three Coins to Randidly as an emergency means of preserving Expira if the reform plan triggers reprisals. She provides the contingency but does not remain their bearer. (Chapter 1507)
