River
River is a young human from the Land of a Hundred Rivers, Pearl's partner, and the first paladin guided by Lex's Cliff persona. His oath to give Pearl a better life replaces the ordinary cultivation he lost to poisoned meridians, turning a desperate refugee into an immortal defender whose strength grows through protection rather than conventional energy training.
Biography
Oath, refuge, and the Guest House
River and Pearl escape their pursuers injured, starving, and emotionally exhausted; Sawdust poison has destroyed his meridians, while Pearl has been made numb by a Mind Curse. Convinced that even a doubtful opportunity is worth taking for her, River swears to improve her life and removes tracking Qi embedded in his own fingers despite having no proper tools. Cliff acknowledges the resolve behind that choice and opens the paladin path, after which River uses his first purifying power to help repel a warlock and accepts land for a Guest House that becomes their home and protected cultivation base. (Chapters 2249–2260)
Growing through protection
Because River's oath rewards actions that improve Pearl's life, running the Guest House, defending its spirit node, completing quests, and supporting her cultivation gradually strengthen him. Progress is initially slow and his lack of combat training makes him reckless, but repeated danger turns protective intent into practical endurance. He and Pearl expose the forces hunting an immortal legacy, fight beside Karev, and use the Guest House as both refuge and information business while preparing a trap for their hidden pursuers. (Chapters 2261–2308)
Immortality and the human campaign
At the immortal tribulation, River uses two shields and his injury-amplified paladin power to hold enemies away from Pearl and Karev, nearly dying so all three can survive. The tribulation turns his mortal body immortal and concentrates his law access into a symbolic shield rather than a human tenet. In Joro he becomes one of the group's main fighters, supports Alliance operations, and continues accompanying Pearl when her grief develops into a desire to change the Alliance from within. Their latest confirmed movement is into the Gilded Hollow, with no later outcome shown. (Chapters 2312–2323 and 2373)
Appearance and personality
River is a twenty-one-year-old man introduced with a dirt-covered, bruised face, cut feet, and ruined meridians. His decision to bite away tracked portions of two fingers leaves lasting damage to his hands. Idealistic promises and theatrical confidence can make him naïve, especially in early combat, but neither humiliation nor fear changes his defining loyalty. Over time Pearl's anger makes him quieter and less flamboyant, while his willingness to question powerful authorities shows that hardship has not made him passive. (Chapters 2249, 2252–2256, 2290, and 2305)
Powers and limitations
Paladin oath and feedback
River's power originates in an oath to do whatever he can to give Pearl a better life. Protective or supportive actions consistent with that oath generate feedback that strengthens him, including improving her safety, cultivation, and emotional condition. Indirect service produces little power, so months of ordinary care initially equal only a day of Pearl's cultivation; decisive protection yields much more. The oath constrains the path morally and mechanically, and the narrative does not show what would happen if he knowingly broke it. (Chapters 2253–2256, 2268, and 2284–2292)
Purification and shield path
Paladin energy can purify demonic, evil, and tracking influences. As a beginner River neutralizes the corrupt nature of a warlock's attack while still suffering its physical impact, and later his energy gradually removes a blood tracking mark. After becoming immortal, his power concentrates around a nonphysical shield concept that can empower real equipment and focus law effects through existing paladin abilities. His repertoire is narrower than ordinary immortal law manipulation, and secret paladin arts remain largely unavailable to him. (Chapters 2256, 2284, 2316, and 2320)
River is strongest in defense and becomes more powerful when injured, a dangerous interaction that lets him endure his tribulation but leaves him near death. The healing effect of Cliff's necklace assists his recovery and is not an innate ability. His early lack of training causes poor stealth and improvised shield attacks; decades of fighting improve his effectiveness, but his limited skill set still develops mainly through refinement rather than acquiring broad new laws. (Chapters 2256, 2316–2321)
Relationships
- Pearl: Pearl is River's partner and the person around whom his oath and life are organized. He protects her without treating her as helpless, while her cultivation and welfare directly shape his power.
- Lex Williams: Lex guides River as Cliff, acknowledges his oath, assigns quests, and provides a path compatible with ruined meridians while refusing to walk it for him.
- Karev: Karev becomes River and Pearl's ally after an initially hostile encounter. The three share cultivation inheritance, tribulations, and the Joro campaign.
Items
River has no finalized notable-item inventory. He often carries Lex's necklace and uses two shields, but neither is a finalized personal item assigned to him.
