Karev

Karev Sunborne is Pearl's ancestor and the founder of the Sunborne lineage. Once a common soldier, his Sun Fire affinity earns an Oolin cultivation technique and begins a cross-racial alliance. An endlessly reusable inheritance token later makes him a hunted fugitive, but reunion with his descendant restores his exhausted resolve and gives him a family to guide. Biography

From soldier to hunted ancestor

Karev enters Oolin lands as an ordinary soldier and is conscripted after they discover his unusual sensitivity to energy and exceptional Sun Fire affinity. He helps concentrate and perfect the region's energy; in exchange, an Upper Battlefield ancestor supplies a cultivation method designed for his body. The cooperation establishes the Sunborne family, but a later inheritance token makes Karev and an Oolin elder targets. Enemies persecute his descendants to flush him out, while years of flight cost him friends, allies, and nearly all emotional endurance. (Chapters 2275–2276, 2286, 2305)

Pearl finally tracks Karev through their bloodline. Mistaking her and River for hunters, he fights until their repeated refusal to deal a crippling blow convinces him they mean no harm. Their reunion forces him to hear how much of the family was destroyed in the hunt for him. Rather than feed Pearl's rage, Karev shares a principle learned through suffering: vengeance matters, but allowing it to replace one's values only destroys the self the enemy failed to kill. Living together at the reopened Guest House gradually gives their bond the character of grandfather and granddaughter. (Chapters 2305–2307)

Immortality and the Gilded Hollow

Karev resumes the inheritance tests with Pearl and River, then undergoes an immortal tribulation after stronger enemies assault their refuge. River nearly sacrifices himself to save both companions. A Celestial publicly executes many conspirators, although Karev alone remains wary that influential culprits escaped. As an Earth Immortal he quickly masters five laws and a Lawcraft, becoming a principal fighter without adopting subservience toward the Alliance. His ring and an inheritance coin later reopen the Gilded Hollow, tying his family's persecution to a cosmic opportunity far larger than any of them understood. (Chapters 2316–2317, 2323, 2382)

Appearance and personality

Karev is an older human marked less by specific features than by the exhaustion of a fugitive who has spent years watching supporters die. He is cautious, kind, principled, and slow to trust without being consumed by paranoia. Unlike Pearl, he seeks retribution without allowing hatred to define him. Rest and family restore his resolve, while True Path instincts keep him alert to political stories that appear too clean. (Chapters 2305–2307, 2317, 2323)

Abilities and cultivation

Karev has extraordinary sensitivity to energy, especially Sun Fire, and follows a body-specific cultivation technique obtained through the Oolin. He advances through the True Path by his own insight, making him formidable enough that Pearl and River struggle to subdue him together. After his tribulation he becomes an Earth Immortal, masters five laws within decades, and uses a simple Lawcraft supplied indirectly through Cliff. His inheritance token opens a new test at each cultivation realm and can admit multiple users repeatedly. These gifts carry corresponding risks: the reusable token attracts immortal hunters, strong destiny draws escalating conflict, and extended pursuit pushes him toward burnout. • Pearl: Pearl is Karev's descendant. Their reunion begins with a fight and grief, then develops into a mutually healing grandparent-grandchild relationship. (Chapters 2305–2307)
