Betty

Betty is Ben's partner and the principal cook at the Midnight Tavern in Babylon. Her domestic warmth helps turn the tavern into a refuge during the Crystal realm's darkness, but Belail's later attack causes her to lose the child she and Ben were expecting.

Biography

Building a refuge with Ben

Betty first appears fussing over an injured Ben and soon applies to work when he joins Lex's tavern. Once hired, she takes charge of the kitchen, coordinates with other cooks, and uses the tavern's abundant supplies to keep displaced families fed during the darkness. Her meals become one of the refuge's anticipated routines, giving frightened guests something ordinary and communal to focus on while monsters and destruction surround the building. Pregnancy and the Babylon attack

Ben celebrates when a doctor confirms Betty's pregnancy, while Betty responds characteristically by demanding a doctor who will approve drinking and being redirected toward tea. The hope does not survive Belail's assault on Babylon: the attack injures the tavern community and causes her miscarriage. Lex later carries lasting guilt over failing to protect the baby and makes the loss part of his reckoning with Belail, preserving Betty's personal tragedy as a central consequence of the invasion. Appearance and personality

Betty is seven feet eight inches tall, massively built, and visibly muscular, yet her first instinct around the even larger Ben is to coddle him. She is energetic, nurturing, and forceful rather than delicate, applying the same intensity to food, family, and drinking. Her humor and appetite for celebration help sustain the tavern's morale, while her concern whenever Ben behaves unusually shows the attentiveness beneath the comedy. Physical strength

Betty's size and rippling muscles establish exceptional physical power by ordinary standards, and she handles demanding tavern work through a prolonged crisis.
