Ben

Big Ben is an eight-foot-tall Babylon resident whom Lex meets after a serial murder leaves him traumatized and drunk at the Midnight Tavern. Lex eventually hires him as tavern security, and Ben builds a marriage and family around that work while surviving a divine attack whose consequences permanently change his relationship with drinking and violence. Biography

Witness, patron, and new employee

Ben first reaches the Midnight Tavern after witnessing a murder in Babylon and drinks until he passes out. When he wakes emaciated and confused about the date, he agrees to report the crime to the constable rather than hide from it. Soon afterward he publicly announces his engagement to Betty, samples a Nascent-level Sunset Wine, and collapses again. The drink's spiritual energy improves his health and pushes his cultivation toward a breakthrough, but his incapacitation also contributes to losing his former ship work. Lex hires Ben as tavern security partly from guilt and partly because the enormous, sociable local knows Babylon and can handle difficult patrons. Ben accepts the rule against drinking on duty and quickly acts as more than a doorman, retrieving endangered children and reporting murdered neighbors during a crisis. His choice to stay useful under pressure turns a chance tavern customer into one of the establishment's dependable human anchors. (Chapters 344, 350)

Marriage, loss, and recovery

Ben marries Betty and expects a child, but an immortal assault on the tavern later injures staff and causes Betty to miscarry. Ben is left comatose while the household heals. Neither spouse blames the Innkeeper, and in time they choose to move forward, eventually having another child and presenting a stable family life. The recovery is real but not erasure: Ben no longer drinks as he once did, and Lex eventually captures Belail so the family can confront an agent tied to the old trauma. Appearance and personality

Ben is roughly eight feet tall, powerfully built, and often shown in clothing tight across his muscular frame. Betty, at about seven feet eight inches, is one of the few people near his scale. Despite his intimidating size and work as a bouncer, Ben is sociable, affectionate, locally knowledgeable, and an extreme lightweight with alcohol. Grief makes him more restrained without eliminating the warmth visible in his later family life. (Chapters 328–329, 344, 595, 1637, 1862)

Abilities and cultivation

Ben is a cultivator, although the local narrative never assigns him a dependable named realm. Powerful tavern alcohol contains spiritual energy that restores his condition and accumulates until it forces a breakthrough. He can also channel spirit into a scale and associated technique to call one of Zagan's subordinates, showing usable control beyond passive enhancement. His ordinary strengths are equally important: great physical size, security experience, knowledge of Babylon's residents, and a willingness to enter dangerous streets. Alcohol is not a clean power source for him—he passes out easily, loses time, and later avoids drinking in the same way after his family's loss. (Chapters 329–330, 344, 350, 353, 647, 691, 1862)

Relationships

• Betty: Ben's girlfriend becomes his wife and the mother of his children. Their relationship survives miscarriage, recovery, and the long work of rebuilding an ordinary family life. (Chapters 328–329, 595, 708–715, 1207, 1637, 1862)
