Axel Nord

Axel Nord is the patriarch of House Nord, initially a count house in Skadi. After Kai LuForia rescues his family from assassins, Axel hires him as Charlotte's personal knight. This gives Kai entry into Skadi's succession struggle and Axel's vulnerable faction an overwhelming ally. His sponsorship helps Henry survive a coup and brings House Nord promotion to ducal status.

Biography

Assassination attempt and recruitment of Kai

Axel first appears fleeing through a blizzard with his wife Narmeena Nord, Charlotte, and a knight while more than twenty assassins close around them. Although Axel cannot match the attackers, he places himself in front of his wife and daughter after their knight falls. Kai and Karumi destroy the remaining killers, then Kai pretends to collapse so the family will take him in. Axel calls his own knights, orders an honorable funeral for the defender who died, and brings his apparent rescuer home rather than abandoning him in the snow. (Chapter 418)

Axel's gratitude is paired with calculation. He recognizes that a young man capable of eliminating the assassins could give House Nord exceptional protection, though he tells Narmeena that Kai may refuse. After feeding and housing him, Axel tests him against the knight captain with real weapons. Kai wins instantly, and Axel hires him as Charlotte's personal knight, gaining both immediate protection and the possibility that a closer bond could tie Kai's power to the family. Managing an uncontrollable ally

Kai soon attacks enemies connected to the First and Second Princes, threatening to expose House Nord to retaliation from nobles far stronger than a count's ordinary forces. Axel's contribution is coordination: he supplies the political forum and factional structure through which Kai's otherwise personal power becomes a kingdom-wide campaign rather than an isolated act of charity. Axel is an adult man with black hair, which Charlotte inherits. His age, height, eye color, build, and usual clothing are not specified. He first appears as a noble father in flight, later sits at the head of House Nord's table, and dons armor during James's attack. No visual change follows the family's promotion. He is protective, hospitable, and openly affectionate toward his family. Even while frightened, he stands between assassins and his wife and daughter; after rescue, he insists that Kai be fed and respected. He treats servants generously, enjoys lively family dinners, and speaks sentimentally about his own father. Axel's defining political trait is adaptability. As count, Axel commands an estate, household staff, knights, mages, and territory close to Skadi's capital. After House Nord becomes ducal, that institutional authority rises substantially, although the supplied chapters do not enumerate new lands, troops, revenues, or court offices. Axel dons armor and enters the battle against James's forces with his sons and Henry. Kai later becomes sexually involved with her under manipulated circumstances, a violation of Axel's marriage that the hypnosis-altered household does not evaluate with ordinary judgment.
