SJ
SJ, also called the Sacred Jewel, is a sentient entity that assists Gustav Oslov with surveillance, rescue, transformation, and battlefield deception. Although jewel-like in form, SJ acts responsively and is treated here as a character rather than inert property.
Biography
Surveillance and independent assistance
Gustav repeatedly sends SJ to observe targets during the investigations surrounding Yung Jo and the MBO research facilities. SJ records and presents locations, communicates through changes in its glow, and completes assignments away from Gustav, making it an active intelligence partner rather than a passive recording tool. During IYSOP it also moves the critically wounded Falco out of danger and begins healing him. Gustav's warning not to overuse reality warping establishes both the trust between them and a prior danger associated with SJ's strongest power. (Chapters 923–950 and 1178–1201)
Decoy at Planet Humbad
Near Planet Humbad, Gustav summons SJ against a dark being powerful enough to endanger the planet. SJ immediately understands the plan, transforms into a replica of the enemy, and leads it away while Gustav prepares Cohilia. At the decisive moment SJ exchanges places with the original, placing the target in front of Gustav's attack. Gustav then retrieves SJ and rubs its surface affectionately, leaving the sentient companion active and demonstrating how its mimicry and positional control convert a planetary threat into a controlled strike. (Chapter 1537)
Appearance and personality
SJ normally appears as a floating jewel-like entity with an internal light that flickers to communicate mood or intent. It seeks energy when hungry, lowers itself when admonished, responds affectionately to Gustav, and can understand complex commands without spoken elaboration. These behaviors establish curiosity, loyalty, and agency despite its non-humanoid form. (Chapters 1178–1201 and 1537)
Bloodlines and abilities
SJ performs remote surveillance, displays recorded imagery, flies at extreme speed, heals severe injuries, transforms into other beings, swaps positions with targets, and can warp reality. Its powers are unusually broad, but reality warping carries a known danger when used continuously; Gustav explicitly limits it after an earlier accident. The corpus does not assign SJ a Mixedblood rank or fully explain the energy it consumes. (Chapters 923–950, 1178–1201, and 1537)
Relationships
- Gustav Oslov: Gustav directs SJ in the field, feeds and cautions it, and treats it with visible affection.
- Falco: SJ rescues Falco from Strum's attack and supports his recovery.
- The System: The System and SJ both assist Gustav, although the corpus does not define a close independent relationship between them.
- E.E: E.E encounters SJ as part of Gustav's wider team operations.
Items
SJ is itself the sentient identity associated with the Sacred Jewel; it is not described as owning a separate qualifying item.
