Jack Shirwin

Jack Shirwin is Earth's foremost institutional defender for much of the story, a Beacon-ranked mixedblood who shares a transforming body with the distinct consciousness Mack Friendzer.

Biography

Meeting Gustav and defining the shared body

Jack introduces himself after secretly matching Gustav Oslov's output in a camp spar, using only a fragment of his strength and treating the encounter as an enthusiastic test. He has returned from Planet Thrizho and is concerned by Miss Aimee's disappearance, promising Gustav that MBO squads will search for her and offering direct help. (Chapters 849–851)

Before his twelve-hour period ends, Jack explains that he and Mack Friendzer are different people and consciousnesses sharing one body that changes appearance between them. Both possess the Concept of Entities bloodline, but express different abilities. Earlier unrelated people called Jack in Chapters 61 and 197 are not Jack Shirwin. (Chapters 851–852)

Earth's strongest institutional defender

Jack's history includes leading an earlier Earth IYSOP team, and his current reputation makes him one of the universe's top active beings. Unlike the more rebellious Gustav or Aimee, he generally respects MBO procedure and explains refusals, so high command repeatedly treats his presence as the answer to threats no ordinary squad can contain. (Chapters 854–1443)

That institutional reliability is not passivity. Jack remembers altered timelines that weaker beings forget, advises command about the consequences, and recognizes that unknown forces may retain the same memory. His experience with global threats gives him a cautious preference for containment, even when bureaucratic leaders misunderstand the people involved. (Chapters 1362–1427)

Angy's dark transformation and Gustav's trial

When dark-transformed Angy attacks the Death Angel site, Jack meets her with space constructs, star-patterned bindings, and memory from their previous timeline. He intends to kill an existential threat; Gustav intervenes, and the three-way battle ends only after time reversal lets Gustav assimilate Angy's darkness. Jack accepts responsibility for Angy's safety and brings the unconscious Gustav to the MBO rather than claiming a triumph. (Chapters 1497–1503)

Jack later resists officials who want a convenient narrative, promises a fair trial, and tries to testify that Gustav saved Angy and Earth. Enemies exploit his habit of obeying legitimate mission calls to delay him in space, but he breaks their restraint, returns, clears Matilda's entry, and tells the court that he did not capture Gustav as a villain. His testimony materially turns the case toward acquittal. (Chapters 1514–1520)

Last defense of Earth

By the deity invasion, Gustav has surpassed Jack's former title, but Jack remains Earth's available last line of defense. He confronts a deity capable of breaking the world, using gravitational inversion and hexagonal concepts that detonate body parts from within. The attacks fail to bridge the divine gap; even after his chest and torso are pierced, Jack continues standing until he is killed. (Chapters 1657–1658)

His death completes the pattern that defined him: extraordinary individual strength placed at the service of Earth and its institutions, even when those institutions were imperfect. The defense does not stop the invader, but buys a final example of resistance before hope shifts entirely to Gustav. (Chapter 1658)

Appearance and personality

Jack has dark hair and appears no older than about twenty-five despite being over a century old. His body and clothing transform when Mack takes control, making physical description consciousness-dependent rather than a fixed disguise. Jack is friendly, exuberant, and informal enough to dislike honorifics, yet can become stern when lives or justice are at stake. (Chapters 849–854)

He respects hierarchy and procedure more than Gustav, but not blindly: he threatens officials who would block fair treatment, protects Angy under a personal promise, and corrects the false story that he heroically captured Gustav. His experience makes him confident without erasing his capacity to revise a judgment. (Chapters 987–1520)

Bloodlines and abilities

Concept of Entities

Jack and Mack share the Concept of Entities bloodline but retain distinct consciousnesses and ability expressions. Jack materializes star-shaped and hexagonal concepts as spatial constructs, boxes or binds targets, protects surrounding structures, and can detonate concepts placed around body parts. The corpus does not supply a complete catalogue, and Mack's world-building or dungeon feats must not be assigned to Jack. (Chapters 852, 1497–1498, 1658)

One global space-seal construct can prevent every Earth lifeform from moving for about two seconds. Its brief duration is a meaningful limit, though Jack considers it long enough to kill targets. His ordinary constructs can be broken or bypassed by beings at Angy's transformed level, and deity-scale force overwhelms even his highest demonstrated applications. (Chapters 1497–1500, 1658)

Physical and temporal resistance

Jack matches Gustav's rising strength without abilities during their first spar and later fights through fleets with speed, flight, energy, and planetary-scale force. His strength supports gravitational inversion punches that tear layered space-time. He also retains memory across major time reversals, a resistance shared with only exceptionally powerful beings; this preserves experience but does not let him personally control the reversal.
