Captain Illumo
Captain Illumo leads Planet Xionsi's IYSOP team. He repeatedly urges restraint around Earth but compromises that judgment when protecting his planet from disqualification.
Biography
Restraining a resentful team
Illumo cautions Uzeki after the dispute with Gustav Oslov, then becomes the last Xionsi standing before Gustav's sleep command overwhelms him. Rather than pursue revenge for Unda, he tells the team that Unda accepted a wager and must bear its consequences. His effort to redirect them toward competition establishes him as more realistic than the subordinates nursing humiliation. (Chapters 1173–1178)
Orimon's defiance and the tribunal
Illumo warns Orimon that challenging Earth's strongest members is prudence, not cowardice, but cannot stop him or the other Xionsis from intervening during the monolith contest. After Orimon kills Teemee and Glade, Illumo privately recognizes the likely intent yet refuses to concede it publicly because an admission could disqualify the entire team. At the hearing he argues that the gifted item and murderous activation remain unproven. (Chapters 1235–1299)
Appearance and personality
Illumo shares the Xionsi species' translucent skin and nonhuman features, though the corpus does not isolate more individual detail. He is cautious, authoritative, and capable of admitting bad odds. Loyalty to his planet complicates that integrity: when punishment threatens the whole delegation, he chooses advocacy over the private truth he suspects. (Chapters 1173–1178 and 1282–1299)
Bloodlines and abilities
Illumo has the Xionsi Feather Flutter mobility and species techniques, while his exact individual specialty is not clearly named. He resists Gustav's sleep command longer than his teammates and competes strongly enough to captain a high-ranked planet, but loses a major battle after Ophiener achieves new enlightenment. (Chapters 1173, 1276, and 1292–1293)
