Nico Sever
Nico Sever is a reincarnate, artificer, and metal mage whose life in Dicathen begins under the name Elijah Knight before suppressed memories restore his identity as Nico. Elijah is neither a disguise nor a separate person: his friendships, choices, and magic belong to the same continuing identity that later becomes an Alacryan Scythe. Nico's devotion to Cecilia Sever—a separate person whom Agrona reincarnates into Tessia's body—drives both his war against Arthur Leywin and his eventual rebellion against Agrona.
Biography
Early role and commitments
As Elijah Knight, Nico enters the Dire Tombs as a guarded young mage from Darv who wants experience and a place beyond the dwarven guardian who raised him. Lucas's betrayal contrasts with Arthur's refusal to abandon the party, giving Elijah a loyalty he can trust after the expedition becomes catastrophic. He uses earth and unusual metal conjuration to shelter companions, helps carry the wounded Arthur out, and chooses to follow him to Xyrus. The decision creates a home with the Helsteas and turns a temporary adventuring alliance into his closest friendship. (Chapters 32–40)
At Xyrus Academy, Elijah studies as a Scholar Mage, rooms with Arthur, assists his teaching, and becomes more confident using magic that even experienced observers find unusual. His concern for Tessia and his anger at Lucas place him on Arthur's side during the conspiracy, but the attack also reveals how little Elijah understands about his own origin. Captured as Draneeve's faction collapses, he becomes the target of forces that know more about him than he knows about himself. The supportive life he built is interrupted before he can choose how to reconcile it with the power and memories hidden inside him. (Chapters 45–98)
The Earth memories later shown through Grey and Nico establish continuity beneath that missing past. Nico, Grey, and Cecilia grow up together as orphans, forming a makeshift family while Cecilia's immense ki draws institutional attention. Nico lacks Grey's combat status but compensates through engineering, investigation, and persistent suspicion of the people controlling their friend. He wants a future with Cecilia and tries to persuade Grey that her handlers are dangerous, yet Grey's pursuit of kingship and trust in Vera leave Nico feeling that ambition has displaced the loyalty that once held the three together. (Chapters 141–171)
Cecilia's death on Grey's sword becomes the decisive interpretation through which Nico understands both lives. Without knowing that Cecilia deliberately used Grey's attack to end her own exploitation, Nico sees murder and abandonment: the strongest person in their family appears to have killed the person Nico was trying to save. Agrona later exploits that grief while restoring Nico's memories within Elijah's continuing reincarnated life. The restoration does not erase Elijah's bond with Arthur; it weaponizes the same intimacy, turning knowledge of Arthur's habits and affections into fuel for revenge. (Chapters 153–179)
Later conflict and consequences
Nico returns openly as an Alacryan Scythe and tells Tessia that Elijah was the life he lived before his memories were restored. He seeks to capture her because Agrona's reincarnation design requires her as Cecilia's vessel, treating Tessia's separate identity as expendable to recover the woman he lost. At the sanctuary portal, Nico confronts Arthur with their shared past and attacks beside Cadell. Arthur's refusal to accept Nico's account cannot bridge years of manipulation and hatred, and the battle ends with Arthur's core and body collapsing while Sylvie sacrifices herself to save him. (Chapters 225–255)
Once Cecilia is reincarnated, Nico defines protection as keeping her near and preserving her loyalty, even while Agrona controls what she remembers. He accepts the Scythe system because it appears to give them security and a route to the promised future they were denied on Earth. The Victoriad exposes the weakness beneath that bargain: Arthur defeats Nico decisively, destroys his core's stability, and escapes Agrona. Humiliation matters less than the realization that Agrona will discard or diminish him whenever his usefulness conflicts with control of the Legacy. (Chapters 348–380)
Working beneath Taegrin Caelum, Nico returns to artificing and investigation as his confidence in Agrona erodes. He studies cores, relics, and the mechanics around Cecilia rather than trusting the explanations offered to them, and recovered memories reveal inconsistencies in the story that cast Grey as a simple murderer. Nico's love remains possessive enough that he fears what the truth may change, but he begins giving Cecilia information that can restore her own judgment. The engineer who once warned Grey about institutional manipulation reemerges inside the Scythe who had accepted it. (Chapters 402–433)
Nico's final break begins when he can no longer deny that Tessia's consciousness remains within Cecilia's vessel, although he still describes her with contempt and does not explicitly accept her independent claim to the body. He undermines Agrona after learning that the promised return home was false and that Agrona plans to strip the Legacy from Cecilia. Their actions converge with Arthur's pursuit of Fate, where Nico faces the manipulation that made Agrona's promises persuasive without fully repairing the harm he helped cause. By the epilogue, Nico and Cecilia are reunited beyond the roles of Scythe, Legacy, vessel, and enemy. (Chapters 449–490)
Appearance and personality
As Elijah, Nico appears as a black-haired boy with a reserved expression and later wears Xyrus Academy's Scholar Mage uniform. When he returns as Nico, he is older, taller, and very pale, with an appearance and emotional bearing different enough that Tessia initially experiences him as alien to the friend Arthur described. The physical change accompanies restored memory and Vritra enhancement, but it does not create a new identity; the same reincarnated person carries Elijah's friendship, Nico's Earth trauma, and the consequences of both. (Chapters 32, 45, 98, and 252–255)
Nico is intelligent, technically inventive, loyal, and deeply afraid of failing Cecilia. Those traits can become perceptiveness and courage—he investigates her handlers and later Agrona—but also jealousy, secrecy, and a willingness to deny other people agency when loss feels imminent. He is less physically dominant than Grey in their first life and interprets that imbalance as proof that warnings alone cannot protect anyone. Restored memory and Vritra power initially harden him into vengeance; disillusionment later forces him to recover the skeptical, problem-solving habits Agrona's certainty had suppressed. (Chapters 141–179, 225–255, 348–433, and 449–490)
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Restored Nico and Scythe enhancement | 252–255 | Agrona restores his memories and enhanced Vritra-aligned core, giving him Scythe-level metal spikes, fire, and other mana arts. |
| Core shattered at the Victoriad | 379–380 | Arthur overwhelms him and damages the core underpinning his bestowed rank, sharply reducing the security and power Agrona provided. |
| Core repaired by Cecilia | 402 | The Legacy restores the damaged core through extraordinary mana control; the repair is Cecilia's intervention, not a new self-healing ability. |
| Return to Earth | 490 | Leaves the Scythe and reincarnation system behind for an ordinary life with Cecilia; the final existence is not shown retaining Alacryan mana power. |
Relationships
- Cecilia Sever: Nico's childhood friend and beloved, whose exploitation and death define his deepest fear. His effort to restore her leads him to participate in Tessia's violation and Agrona's control; his later development begins when he helps Cecilia recover truth and choose for herself. Cecilia remains a separate identity throughout. (Chapters 141–179, 225–255, 348–433, and 449–490)
- Arthur Leywin: Grey is Nico's childhood friend from Earth, while Arthur becomes Elijah's closest friend in Dicathen. Restored memories join rather than erase those bonds, making Nico's hatred intimate; their conflict is built from real loyalty transformed by grief, false memories, and mutually incomplete knowledge of Cecilia's death. (Chapters 32–98, 141–179, 225–255, 378–380, and 481–490)
- Agrona Vritra: The ruler who restores Nico's memories, grants him Scythe-level power, and promises Cecilia's return. Agrona exploits Nico's grief, manipulates Cecilia through him, and discards his autonomy when it threatens control of the Legacy, eventually turning dependent loyalty into rebellion. (Chapters 225–255, 348–433, and 449–490)
- Tessia Eralith: The separate person whose body Agrona uses as Cecilia's vessel. Nico initially treats Tessia as a means to Cecilia's restoration, and even after he can no longer deny that her spirit remains, he describes her as an obstruction rather than explicitly acknowledging her right to the body. Tessia remains one of the clearest victims of his refusal to accept loss. (Chapters 248–255, 348–380, 449, and 469–490)
- Lucas Wykes: A Dire Tombs companion whose betrayal gives Elijah an early contrast between self-preservation and loyalty. Elijah's distrust of Lucas later aligns him with Arthur during the Xyrus conspiracy. (Chapters 32–40 and 78–98)
Mana, aether, and abilities
Earth and metal conjuration
As Elijah, Nico uses earth defenses and unusually direct metal conjuration, forming shelters, chains, spikes, restraints, and other structures without the ordinary elemental presentation expected by his companions. The magic lets him protect Samantha and support the Dire Tombs party, but sustained use exhausts him and cannot compensate for every stronger enemy or betrayal. At Xyrus, greater confidence and pressure draw out more forceful applications. The unusual affinity foreshadows an origin Elijah cannot yet remember without invalidating the courage and skill with which he uses it. (Chapters 32–40, 45–52, 81–98)
Scythe power and Vritra magic
With restored memories and Agrona's enhancement, Nico returns at Scythe level, creating and directing dark metal-like spikes and combining them with fire and other mana arts. The power makes him dangerous enough to pressure Arthur during Dicathen's fall, but it remains dependent on a core Agrona's system can alter and on confidence that deteriorates as manipulation becomes visible. At the Victoriad, Arthur overwhelms him with aetheric reinforcement, God Step, and an aether blade; Arthur does not acquire the later Realmheart insight until afterward. Damage to Nico's core exposes how thoroughly borrowed rank had been mistaken for security. (Chapters 252–255, 348–380, and 402–425)
Artificing, engineering, and investigation
In his former life, Nico builds and repairs devices while investigating the organizations pursuing Cecilia; technical work is how he acts when he cannot match Grey in direct combat. The same aptitude resurfaces beneath Taegrin Caelum, where he studies cores, relics, and Agrona's procedures for evidence rather than accepting authority. Artificing has practical limits—machines cannot by themselves free Cecilia or undo memory alteration—but it restores Nico's capacity to test claims. That return to method becomes an ethical development as well as a professional one, helping him replace vengeance with informed resistance. (Chapters 141–179, 402–433, and 449–481)
Reincarnated memory and identity
Nico's continuity across Earth, Elijah Knight, and the restored Scythe is a condition of his reincarnation rather than a spell he activates. Agrona's suppression leaves Elijah unable to explain his past, while restoration brings trauma, technical knowledge, attachments, and resentment back into conscious reach. Those memories can be manipulated: Nico helps implant a false version of events in Cecilia and later discovers how such editing has distorted them both. His eventual resistance depends on integrating rather than partitioning his lives—accepting Elijah's affection for Arthur, Nico's grief, and responsibility for choices made under both names. (Chapters 32–98, 141–179, 225–255, 402–433, and 449–490)
Items
Nico's recurring tools are conjured metal, laboratory apparatus, and artificing materials rather than a consistently named personal artifact scoped for a separate item history. His importance lies in what he designs, investigates, and learns from cores and relics, not in ownership of a signature weapon. (Chapters 32–40, 141–179, and 402–433)
