Mica Earthborn

Mica Earthborn is a dwarven Lance, gravity mage, and defender of Darv whose irreverent humor masks accumulated grief and a stubborn sense of responsibility. Her loyalty survives the deaths and betrayals that destroy the original Lance corps and dwarven monarchy, shifting from crown and title toward people, clan, and fellow defenders. Later experiments with Vritra-horn mana and the Lance limiter let her develop beyond the strength originally granted by asuran artifacts, but that progress remains dangerous and incomplete.

Biography

Early role and commitments

Mica first appears among Dicathen's Lances after Alea's death, where teasing and blunt speech keep grief from turning their gathering into ceremony alone. Her humor is not indifference: the surviving Lances understand that one of their small number has been tortured and killed by an enemy none of them can yet measure. Mica's bickering with Aya and Olfred reflects long familiarity, making the later losses within that group personal rather than merely strategic. She continues serving because the continent still needs the power Alea no longer provides. (Chapters 79–104)

Darv's royal betrayal forces Mica to decide whether Lance service means obedience to the Greysunders or protection of dwarven people. She accompanies Arthur and Olfred while suspicions close around their mission, but Olfred drugs her to keep her from interfering before Aya confronts and executes him. Mica later returns willingly for questioning and is cleared rather than fleeing responsibility. The betrayal is painful because their shared origin, banter, and service had made trust seem settled, and it shifts her loyalty away from a crown capable of treason and toward choices she can defend herself. (Chapters 164–180)

Under occupation, Mica returns to Darv through its tunnels and works with Skarn, Hornfels, and other Earthborn allies rather than relying on compromised authorities. Her small stature and comic complaints help her move through tense scenes without pretending the danger is small. She uses gravity and earth to survive prepared traps, tunnel collapses, enemy numbers, and hostile terrain while pursuing collaborators. The resistance disrupts Alacryan control but does not save the old government, leaving Mica with a clearer identity as a defender of dwarves who may no longer share one trustworthy state. (Chapters 203–239)

When the sanctuary comes under attack, Mica fights as one of the few remaining Lances while civilians and wounded leaders struggle to escape. Taci's assault leaves her gravely wounded, costs her an eye, and kills Aya. Mica remains conscious nearby, mourning her companion as the survivors assess the devastation. Survival makes her strategically essential, but it also deepens the grief beneath her humor and the pressure to keep functioning for people with fewer defenses. (Chapters 251 and 384–388)

Later conflict and consequences

Mica rejoins Varay Aurae and Bairon Wykes to defend Vildorial, turning the three survivors into a continental force rather than separate royal champions. They fight while exhausted and still recovering, because losing the dwarven capital would erase both refuge and organized resistance. Mica's local knowledge and earth affinity are valuable underground, but neither prevents Wraith-level enemies from overwhelming prepared positions. Standing with the other Lances rebuilds a form of solidarity after betrayal, although it cannot remove the physical and emotional cost of being among the last. (Chapters 392–400)

Arthur's attempt to remove the Lance limiter asks Mica to trust another dangerous source of power after asuran artifacts already shaped her core. She absorbs and purifies mana from Vritra horns while Arthur, Gideon, Emily, and Regis study the hidden restriction, sharing Varay's concern that the experiment may waste Arthur's time or kill them. The procedure is not a simple gift: foreign mana resists processing, the artifact includes safeguards, and progress depends on coordinated intervention. Mica accepts those risks because Dicathen needs defenders who can keep growing instead of remaining weapons capped by Kezess's design. (Chapters 404–405)

Mica then enters the Relictombs with Arthur's group, where her complaints and jokes coexist with disciplined protection of less experienced companions. The zones deny her the comfortable advantage of familiar stone and place the party behind black doors, shifting platforms, and artificial trials. She uses gravity, earth, and hammer work to help clear beasts and ruins, but must coordinate rather than solve every obstacle through force. The expedition demonstrates her development after the limiter experiment: she has greater purpose and room to grow, yet exhaustion, hostile rules, and stronger enemies continue to define meaningful limits. (Chapters 419–432)

Through the asuran war, Mica remains one of Darv's principal defenders and a coalition Lance beside people who once belonged to rival kingdoms or enemy forces. Final battles demand gravity and earth magic on a scale the original royal role never anticipated, while political survival requires her to represent dwarven interests without recreating the obedience that enabled the Greysunders. Humor remains her way of resisting despair, not a retreat from responsibility. Her later position is defined by endurance: she keeps fighting after crown, corps, and certainty have fallen, and helps make protection answerable to a broader community. (Chapters 442–539)

Appearance and personality

Mica is a small, youthful-looking dwarf whose physical scale contrasts with the force of her magic and hammer fighting. She carries herself with the confidence of a veteran and rarely adopts the distant formality expected of a Lance, favoring blunt expressions, visible reactions, and practical combat gear. Underground battles frequently leave her dust-covered or injured, reinforcing the gap between ceremonial ideas of Dicathen's strongest mages and the exhausting conditions in which she actually serves. (Chapters 104, 169–180, 224–239, 384–405, and 419–432)

Her defining social trait is humor, often expressed as complaints, teasing, or deliberate irreverence toward solemn authority. That wit coexists with stubbornness, loyalty, and grief: Alea's death wounds the entire corps, Olfred's betrayal makes trust costly, and the sanctuary battle leaves Mica among a shrinking group of survivors. She can be impatient and proud of her strength, yet she repeatedly chooses collective plans that require restraint and dependence on others. Over time, jokes become a way to preserve companionship while carrying responsibilities that no longer have a stable monarchy behind them. (Chapters 79–104, 164–239, 384–432, and 442–539)

Relationships

  • Varay Aurae: Fellow surviving Lance and later coalition partner. Their temperaments differ, but shared defense of the sanctuary, Vildorial, and Dicathen turns royal-era service into durable battlefield trust. (Chapters 384–405 and 442–539)
  • Bairon Wykes: Fellow Lance whose severity often invites Mica's irreverence. Loss and training leave them relying on one another as members of the remaining continental defense. (Chapters 79–104, 384–405, and 442–539)
  • Arthur Leywin: Commander, ally, and trainer. Mica fights beside Arthur in Darv and later accepts his dangerous attempt to free her core from the Lance limiter before joining his Relictombs expedition. (Chapters 169–180, 224–239, 392–432, and 442–539)
  • Olfred Warend: Fellow dwarven Lance and familiar companion whose collaboration with the enemy turns institutional betrayal into a personal wound. He drugs Mica to keep her uninvolved before Aya kills him; Mica's later questioning and exoneration further separate loyalty to dwarves from obedience to compromised leaders. (Chapters 79–104 and 164–180)
  • Aya Grephin: Fellow Lance and companion in the original corps. Their affectionate bickering gives way to another loss Mica carries after Dicathen's fall. (Chapters 79–104, 164–180, and 384–388)
  • Skarn and Hornfels Earthborn: Clan allies who help Mica resist occupation in Darv's tunnels. Their support restores a local solidarity that royal betrayal had damaged. (Chapters 224–239)

Mana, aether, and abilities

Earth and gravity magic

Mica manipulates earth, stone, weight, and force, using gravity to hinder targets or change the violence of movement around her. Underground terrain gives her abundant material and spatial familiarity, letting her alter tunnels, resist collapse, and attack through the environment. That advantage is conditional: prepared nullification, unstable caverns, sustained enemy numbers, and opponents who can overpower Lance-scale magic all constrain her. Her strongest scenes therefore combine affinity with local judgment rather than treating earth as automatic control of any battlefield. (Chapters 169–180, 224–239, 384–400, and 419–432)

Hammer combat and physical reinforcement

Mica fights at close range with a hammer, white-core reinforcement, and gravity-enhanced force. Her small body does not limit the impact she can generate, and she shifts between direct strikes and environmental magic according to space. In Relictombs zones, hammer work gives her a reliable answer when unfamiliar rules or artificial structures make broad earth manipulation uncertain. She remains vulnerable to accumulated wounds, exhaustion, and enemies whose speed prevents her from setting the field, making coordination with Varay, Bairon, Arthur, and expedition members essential. (Chapters 170–180, 224–239, 384–400, 419–432, and 524–525)

White core, Vritra horns, and the Lance limiter

Mica's white core was elevated through the Lance artifact system, which also imposed a hidden ceiling on further development. During Arthur's experiment, she draws mana from Vritra horns and purifies it so the team can observe how her core processes foreign power and locate the restriction. Resistance in the channels, artifact safeguards, and the risk of uncontrolled energy make the procedure dangerous; removing the limiter does not instantly grant a new named stage. It gives Mica room to develop through later training and battle while preserving the ordinary limits of injury, reserves, and imperfect understanding. (Chapters 104, 147–180, 384–407, 419–466, and 524–525)

Flight and battlefield coordination

As a white-core Lance, Mica can fly through ambient mana control and sustain combat across large spaces. Her best applications coordinate gravity, terrain, and allied timing: she can pin or redirect enemies, create openings for other Lances, and reinforce defensive positions rather than pursuing isolated duels. Later coalition battles require her to work with humans, elves, Alacryans, and asuras whose methods do not share one command tradition. Her development is therefore tactical as well as magical, replacing the assumption that a Lance is a solitary royal weapon with practice as one part of a varied defense. (Chapters 169–180, 384–432, and 442–539)

Items

  • Compass: The navigation relic enables the controlled group entry through which Mica joins Arthur's Relictombs expedition. It is an operational tool shared by the expedition rather than her personal property. (Chapters 419–432)
  • Hammer: Mica's recurring close-combat weapon, used with gravity, earth magic, and physical reinforcement. The corpus establishes its role but not a separate persistent name or item history. (Chapters 170–180, 224–239, 384–432, and 524–525)
  • Lance and Vritra-horn apparatus: Related artifacts and mana drawn from Vritra horns are used to examine and remove the hidden ceiling on Mica's core. They are experimental resources under group custody, not established personal possessions. (Chapters 404–405)
