Compass
History
Arthur and Caera replace an inert Reliquary artifact called a “dead relic” with a fake and escape with the original pewter or silver sphere. Caera returns the same artifact to Arthur, who restores it with aether and Aroa's Requiem; the sphere then splits into hemispheres, opens a portal, and is explicitly named the Compass when its halves reunite. Experimentation reveals an ascension half that establishes entry and a descension half that reconnects a Relictombs exit to the waiting anchor. Arthur later learns to direct it toward remembered zones and uses it to move groups through selected portals. (Chapters 357–363, 367, 387, and 425)
Properties and use
Separated, one hemisphere remains outside as an anchor while the other travels with the entering group. Aether can stabilize or retarget an existing portal, but the device still needs a viable frame and consumes Arthur's reserves. Rejoining the halves forms a sphere. It enables controlled group travel, not unrestricted teleportation to any imagined place. (Chapters 359–363, 367, 387, 425, and 453)
