Hein Kraaijenschot

Hein Kraaijenschot is Caïssa's principal tanker, a shield specialist whose first priority is keeping others alive. Family hardship initially limits the opportunities available to him, but the same responsibility drives him to accept Ren Dover's offer, endure years of dangerous expeditions, and grow into the immovable center of Caïssa's field formations.

Biography

Family duty and Caïssa's offer

Hein first appears in the Iron Fortress tournament, where his careful redirection of each blow lets him compete with better-funded defensive specialists despite inferior resources. His defeat matters because victory could have improved a family life reshaped by catastrophe: villains killed his mother and paralyzed his father while the latter protected Hein's infant siblings. Hein rejects elite academies to remain near their shop, works there after classes, and refuses to blame his father for the sacrifice. His measured S-rank talent therefore exists beside a deliberately restricted education, making duty rather than ambition the defining pressure on his early life. (Chapter 243)

Ren Dover recruits Hein by offering a credible path to an elixir capable of healing spinal injuries and by advancing enough money to support the family during the expedition. Hein is suspicious of anyone exploiting his father's condition, but accepts once the proposal becomes concrete; he leaves after an emotional farewell and joins a group he initially underestimates. Months of constant combat change that judgment. He recognizes Leopold Ray as a mentor, Ryan Polive and Smallsnake as indispensable specialists, and Ava Leafz as a natural combat partner rather than baggage. (Chapters 289–300)

Expeditions, Issanor, and the tournament

Outside the human domain, Hein and Ava learn to combine defense with beast attacks until they can defeat a D-ranked creature together. His old E-rank shield is reduced to cracked scrap, but the expedition raises him into D- rank far sooner than he expected. At Henolur he plants himself in the tower's second line, taking repeated demon attacks while Ava and Leopold work around him. This is where his role becomes stable: he does not need to deliver every killing blow, because denying the enemy access to more vulnerable allies is itself the formation's central function. Hein enters Issanor's interspecies tournament because the elven prize may cure his father. The need makes him tense rather than reckless: he admits that he must obtain the elixir, then fights opponents far above his C+ rank with the same technical defense that first attracted Ren. Ren eventually obtains an elven tear through Gervis and explicitly connects the expense and future obligation to his promise to Hein. The prize thus completes the motive behind Hein's recruitment even though the local corpus does not separately depict the father's treatment. (Chapters 383–460)

Scattering, reunion, and Immorra

When the mana compressor scatters Caïssa, Hein remains with Ava and Leopold. The three repeatedly protect Ryan while he solves the technical crisis, and Hein's willingness to absorb danger keeps the group's engineer working when direct combat is unavoidable. After the reunion, the apparent death of Smallsnake and the approach of the human–Monolith war leave him in a more experienced unit, but not an emotionally detached one; he still worries about family, grieves teammates, and uses blunt humor to steady people around him. (Chapters 570–606)

Back in Immorra, Hein struggles with the planet's gravity before returning to his familiar place beside Ava and Leopold. During the defense of Silug's city he deflects attacks, shield-bashes demons off balance, and uses Iron Lance to pierce a core, continuing even after exhaustion and severe pain set in. His reliability later makes him a regular training partner for Han Yufei, although the training is punishing enough that Leopold jokes about Hein's permanent black eye. (Chapters 615–692)

Pillar of Lust and aftermath

During the final displacement, Hein and Ava are trapped in the Pillar of Lust, where ordinary mana recovery is suppressed. Hein's armor is already cracked, yet he still orders Ava ahead and divides his shield into nine floating sections to catch the first pursuit wave. Angelica von Droix rescues them and supplies Devil Contracts that let them function in the demonic environment. The contracts later reduce the mental effect of the Lust matriarch's charm, but do not make either fighter immune to physical exhaustion or stronger demons. (Chapters 808, 849)

Hein survives the conflict and returns to ordinary Caïssa life. In the final epilogue he and Ava arrive at Smallsnake's café carrying boxes and immediately resume their familiar bickering about which of them did the work. The small scene is his latest state: after years defined by separation, dangerous planets, and defensive stands, he is alive and again working alongside the companions whose value he once misjudged. Appearance and personality

Hein is a sturdy young man of Dutch descent with light-brown, sometimes described as curly brown, hair and hazel eyes. Although not the largest contestant in the Iron Fortress event, his developed build and imposing aura make his defensive role obvious. Later equipment centers on heavy armor and a shield; by the Pillar of Lust both are visibly battered from prolonged combat. (Chapters 243, 289, 808)

He is earnest, family-centered, and more sensitive than his size suggests. Losing the tournament brings him to tears, he records messages for his family in case an expedition kills him, and his father's recovery remains more important than public status. Experience makes him less fussy about blood on his shield and more comfortable swearing under pressure, but not less protective. He can be shy or easily flustered in ordinary conversation, while danger brings out a calm willingness to put himself between an attacker and an ally. (Chapters 243, 289–300, 635)

Shield technique and tanking

Hein's defense depends on technique as much as toughness. He changes the shield's angle or shifts a step to redirect force instead of receiving every blow squarely, anchors his footing with mana, and uses shield bashes to disrupt an enemy before allies attack. By the final conflict his shield can separate into nine independently floating pieces and reassemble afterward, broadening the area he can cover. Its defense is formidable but finite: repeated Marquis-class blows nearly force him backward, the segments shake under a pursuit wave, and the effort can leave him bleeding internally or exhausted. Iron Body and pain suppression

Iron Body is a three-star martial manual at greater mastery in Chapter 300. It reinforces bones and muscles, training the body toward exceptional hardness and durability; Hein's status correspondingly emphasizes stamina and strength over agility. His unnamed skill can suppress pain for a limited period, allowing him to keep functioning through impacts that would normally interrupt a tanker. Neither effect prevents injury. Pain returns, veins and muscles can still be damaged, and ignoring warning signals risks letting him fight past safe physical limits. (Chapter 300; Chapter 644)

Iron Lance and formation combat

Iron Lance forms a thin gray, spear-like projection from Hein's extended hand. He uses it after a shield bash, driving through a demon until the projection reaches and breaks its core. The technique gives a normally defensive fighter a precise finishing option, but its short range and sequencing mean he must first create an opening and physically close the distance. His strongest results therefore come in formation with Ava's beasts and Leopold's covering fire rather than as an independent long-range attacker. (Chapters 294, 300, 635)

Devil Contract adaptation

Angelica's Devil Contract temporarily adapts Hein to the Pillar's demonic environment. It removes the crippling mana-recovery restriction and later buffers the Lust matriarch's mental fog. The benefit is conditional on the contract and environment; it is not evidence of a permanent combat-rank advancement, does not erase fatigue, and does not grant Hein Angelica's own demonic techniques. Relationships

• Ren Dover: Ren recruits Hein through the promise of a cure for his father, finances the family during the expedition, and later acquires the promised elven tear. Hein becomes one of the tankers Ren deliberately nurtures for the coming war (Chapters 289–290, 460, 673).
• Ava Leafz: Ava is Hein's closest recurring field partner. His shield immobilizes or redirects targets for her beasts, and the two remain together through the compressor scattering and Pillar of Lust (Chapters 294, 570–587, 808–849).
• Leopold Ray: Leopold teaches Hein how to hold a shield and survive unfamiliar battlefields, then covers him with the dwarven firearm. Hein comes to regard the older mercenary as a master (Chapters 300, 635).
• Ryan Polive: Hein initially mistakes Ryan for baggage, then recognizes his technical importance and repeatedly protects him. Years later he comforts Ryan during a period of visible strain (Chapters 300, 570–587, 788).
• Angelica von Droix: Hein is initially frightened by the demon in his unit but grows accustomed to fighting beside her. Her final Devil Contract saves his and Ava's ability to function within Lust's Pillar (Chapters 300, 808–849).
