Inheritance Sphere

An Inheritance Sphere, usually called an Inheritor Sphere in the narrative, is an advanced vessel that captures the Mana of a dead Mage King or stronger being so another person can use it for advancement. Because Aterium's higher realms compete for a finite supply of Mana, these spheres function as both technical devices and instruments of imperial succession.

History

Adam's sacrifice and the imperial settlement

Adam creates the first directly shown sphere while diverting Gregorio's Anti-Magic away from Kali. The vessel cannot preserve all his Mana because of the manner of his death, but it retains enough to create an Initial Mage Emperor. Kali takes custody, intending its power for their son Abaddon, while Gregorio and the other Emperors confront the political danger of allowing that transfer. (Chapters 811–813)

Gregorio does not seize the sphere outright. Instead, he proposes that the strongest future Mage King win it through a tournament and use it to become an Emperor. This settlement converts Adam's private inheritance into a publicly contested succession prize and postpones Abaddon's advancement rather than eliminating it. (Chapter 814)

Institutional vessels and tournament prizes

The same technology is used for ordinary Mage King Mana. Imperial rules require the Mana of an intervening or defeated Mage King to be surrendered or dispersed, and a sphere can hold that reserve while a recipient or tournament is chosen. A later explanation states that the devices are expensive, highly advanced, and can only be created and used by Mage Kings or stronger beings. (Chapters 845–846, 878, and 898)

During the war, the Myriad King's Mana is secured in a neutral sphere for a future tournament. The Grand Tournament subsequently awards the Lightning Manor two spheres containing enough Mana to create a Peak Mage King, although Shang's disqualification prevents him from absorbing either. These uses show that a sphere can store a calibrated inheritance without making the nominal victor its immediate consumer. (Chapters 921 and 968)

The final imperial battle

Gregorio uses an Inheritor Sphere tactically when a pearl captures the Fierycold Queen's Mana and he sacrifices that stored power to Entropy. Moments later, Nivera's death produces another sphere; Linastra retrieves it and transfers it directly to Abaddon, who begins consuming the Mana during the battle. This newer inheritance is superior to Adam's older store. After the fighting, Abaddon disperses Adam's sphere rather than absorbing it. (Chapters 1005–1006 and 1018)

Abilities and properties

• The vessel captures a dead high-level Mage's Mana, preventing that power from immediately dispersing through the world and making it available for a chosen successor. (Chapters 811 and 898)
• Its stored quantity depends on the donor and circumstances. Adam's damaged transfer still contains enough for an Initial Mage Emperor, while lesser spheres can hold a Mage King's Mana or a calibrated advancement reserve. (Chapters 811, 845, and 968)
• Only Mage Kings and stronger beings can create and use Inheritor Spheres, and the devices are described as expensive and advanced. (Chapter 898)
• Custody does not equal ownership or consumption: spheres may be held neutrally, awarded by tournament, transferred in battle, sacrificed as fuel, absorbed by a recipient, or deliberately dispersed. (Chapters 814, 921, 968, 1005–1006, and 1018)
