Kali

Kali, the Empress of Death, is a founding member of the imperial order that succeeds Lucius Volstad and the ruler of the Judgment Palace. Her overwhelming Death Magic, possessive bond with Adam, contempt for Gregorio, and loyalty to her son Abaddon place her at the center of the conflicts that dismantle that order.

Biography

Judgment Palace and the imperial balance

Kali first appears at the heart of the Judgment Palace with Adam, the Emperor of Life. Their relationship is built around a contradiction that mirrors their affinities: Adam happily yields his former friendships and independence to her, while Kali loves him so intensely that she also wants the final possession his death would represent. Earlier in their lives, Lucius had awakened Kali from a centuries-long coma, after which Adam stayed to train her; when they rejoined Lucius's group, her power immediately placed her below only Lucius in the group's practical hierarchy. In the imperial era, that history becomes pride. Kali regards Gregorio as an emotional inferior whose formal position as Lucius's second-in-command never reflected actual strength (Chapters 808–810).

Their son Abaddon gives Kali and Adam a second shared objective. Because his Life and Death Dual Affinity makes him an unprecedented contender, they want enough reserved Mana to raise him from Mage King to Mage Emperor. The other Emperors reject their proposal to kill the Beast Kings for that purpose, and Kali instead argues for contests in which Mage Kings can take one another's Mana. Her preferred one-party-consent rules expose her worldview: strength should decide claims without institutional protection for the unwilling. The debate remains unresolved when Gregorio wrongly blames Kali for Vana's murder and arrives at the Judgment Palace seeking retaliation (Chapters 808, 812–814).

Kali deliberately worsens that misunderstanding. Although she does not know why Gregorio is enraged, she implies responsibility simply to provoke the man she disdains. Gregorio kills two of her Mage Kings, and Kali answers with the Abominable State, dismissing his ordinary Spells until he uses Anti-Magic fueled by the dead Kings' Mana. Adam diverts the attack that should have killed her, sacrificing himself and devastating a vast part of Aterium while placing his remaining Mana in an Inheritance Sphere. Kali survives with the sphere but cannot reduce her response to normal grief: Adam's death fulfills one of her opposed desires while also taking away the person around whom her life had been organized. The other Emperors forgive her after judging Adam's death and the loss of her subordinates sufficient punishment (Chapters 809–813).

War among the Emperors

Gregorio refuses imprisonment and uses the threat of freeing the Archivist to impose a settlement. Kali retains Adam's Inheritance Sphere, but its use is deferred for fifty thousand years: a future tournament will decide which Mage King receives the stored Mana and becomes an Emperor. This turns Adam's last gift to Abaddon into an officially contested prize and converts Kali's private family interest into an enduring imperial fault line. Her grievance against Gregorio also becomes the accepted origin of the long war between the Judgment Palace and Lightning Manor, even as both rulers remain constrained by the Archivist threat and by the danger of consuming too much of Aterium's finite Mana (Chapters 813–814, 880, 931).

By the Grand Tournament, Kali is both host and political arbiter. She creates the Void of Death used to select opponents, changes the event into a team competition, and sends less-hostile Empires against Lightning Manor before its principal enemies. Those choices give Shang a viable route through rules designed to neutralize his warrior abilities. When Shang survives the final attack through Void Break, Kali reaches a compromise serving neither public bloc completely: she disqualifies him from future tournaments and forbids him from absorbing the prize, but refuses demands for his execution and still awards Lightning Manor two inheritance stores. Her ruling preserves her credibility with the hostile Emperors while fulfilling Abaddon's immediate need to keep Shang alive and useful (Chapters 957–969).

The decision reveals how thoroughly the old imperial relationships have become transactional. Gregorio, once responsible for Adam's death, is now Kali's secret ally because Shang can balance Abaddon and because all three want leverage against the remaining Emperors. Kali does not reconcile with Gregorio or cease despising him; instead, she accepts that their enemies, succession plans, and possible escape from Aterium overlap. Her willingness to manipulate the tournament rather than openly declare allegiance keeps that alliance concealed, but it also leaves Shang uncertain whether she has supported or betrayed him. The ambiguity is deliberate political cover rather than indecision about her son's interests (Chapters 957–969).

Abaddon, Shang, and the last alliance

After Shang reconstructs himself through Entropy, Kali provides the imperial access his plan requires. She announces that she can suppress Abomination Lords, admits the disguised Shang into the Judgment Palace, and seals him inside Emperor-grade ore so other observers perceive an advanced tool rather than a person. Shang manufactures Entropy Ore and summons compliant Abominations; Kali shapes the material into cages, places the prisoners deep beneath the Empires, cloaks them with Magic Circles, and charges the other rulers immense quantities of Mana for the service. The operation genuinely stops higher Abominations from appearing, but it also makes Kali the public face of a solution whose essential mechanics depend on the hidden Child of Calamity (Chapters 981–986).

Kali's relationship with Abaddon changes during these preparations. She asks whether he truly intends to follow Shang, surprised that a son who once planned to rule Aterium would subordinate himself. Abaddon answers that Shang has demonstrated power outside the world's limits and may be the route to a larger existence. Kali ultimately accepts his judgment. At the Ultimate Tournament she declares Shang and Abaddon's final benign because Abaddon has already made the decision for her, then joins Gregorio and Linastra against the other Emperors. She spends irreplaceable Death Mana dividing their formation and later intervenes to keep Shang alive long enough for Abaddon to complete his attempted breakthrough (Chapters 993, 1004–1010).

Shang's true body renders Kali's calculations obsolete. After he kills the five opposing Emperors, she realizes that her own power and Abaddon's World Suppression cannot meaningfully contest him. Shang spares her for supporting Abaddon, whom he credits with aiding his transformation, rather than because Kali has earned independent trust. Kali accepts the planned destruction and recreation of life, watches the dead world in a state of affinity-born peace, and comprehends Terminus alongside Shang and Abaddon. Abaddon, Gregorio, and the Archivist then perform the detailed reconstruction while she remains outside that working group. Her survival stays conditional on the new ruler's favor. Once Shang separates Alex from himself and leaves, Alex treats Kali as complicit in the eradication of the old world and kills her immediately after Abaddon (Chapters 1011–1017, 1024–1026, 1030–1031).

Appearance and personality

Kali is a short woman with corpse-white skin, black hair, deathly black lips, and grey eyes that usually appear vacant. She wears a long black dress, and her arrival can take the form of a thin grey wisp emerging from the Judgment Palace. To Shang, her immense Death Mana makes her feel like a bottomless black abyss rather than an ordinary person. Even when angered, she generally speaks in a cold, wispy voice and displays so little outward movement that only those who know her well can distinguish fury from indifference (Chapters 809–810, 958).

Her emotional restraint is not simple absence. Around Adam, she experiences love, possessiveness, and the wish to kill him as intertwined pressures, savoring the contradiction rather than resolving it. Toward most others she is proud, contemptuous, and willing to risk enormous collateral death merely to answer disrespect. After Adam dies, her strongest durable attachment is Abaddon: she questions his plans but follows his strategic judgment once he takes command. That obedience is not maternal warmth in a conventional form; it is recognition that her son's ambition, knowledge, and path now provide the future she can no longer construct with Adam (Chapters 808–813, 976, 993–1004).

Abilities and progression

Death Magic and imperial power

Kali is an established Peak Mage Emperor with a Death Affinity and one of the strongest members of Lucius's former group. Her development is tied to direct confrontation with death: she once entered a coma for more than five thousand years as a Mage Lord to experience brushing past it, and she later describes the higher density of Death Mana as something that pulls the mind toward an afterlife filled with grasping ghosts. The corpus does not dramatize her formal rank advancements, but at her first direct appearance she can erase Gregorio's large-scale elemental assault with a gesture and sustain Death effects over hundreds of thousands of kilometers (Chapters 703, 809–810, 916).

Her Death Mana can invade defenses, attack life and soul, isolate battlefields, and convert an area into a lethal black or grey mist. Its greatest tactical strength is not simply raw force: it lets Kali split enemies and make every moment inside the field consume defensive Mana. Its principal limit is recovery. She can store a terrifying volume of Death Mana, but replenishing it during battle is impractical, so opponents who force her to spend the reserve can leave her substantially weakened. At the final imperial battle, this lets her disrupt seven Emperors and help expose Nivera, but the expenditure also leaves her unlikely to defeat Amon Gus and Brutus Cesar without assistance (Chapters 809–810, 968, 1005–1006).

Abominable State

Kali created the Abominable State after Lucius's group once had to fight an Abomination King without him. Rather than reproduce Entropy, she studied the creature as a model and used black mist to form a six-armed, tentacled Abomination silhouette around herself. The transformation multiplies her power and durability: Gregorio needs repeated top-level attacks to stop a single regenerated claw, while Adam estimates that she can repeat comparable assaults roughly twenty more times. It remains a Mage technique derived from observation, not proof that Kali possesses an Abomination body or can command real Abominations (Chapters 810–813).

The distinction becomes decisive in her partnership with Shang. Kali can create containment Magic, reshape Entropy Ore once Shang manufactures it, siphon Mana from cages, conceal the structures, and transport them through deep Aterium. She cannot herself create the ore or safely command Abomination Kings; Shang must summon and direct them into the cages. Her alarm when she learns that he controls them shows both the limit of the Abominable State and the reason she concludes that future cooperation will become capitulation once his realm rises (Chapters 983–986).

Tournament control, concealment, and crafting

Kali's abilities extend beyond direct combat. The Void of Death used in the Grand Tournament appears to choose teams, but her chosen bracket demonstrates that she controls its result and can use an ostensibly neutral ritual as a political instrument. She also constructs an arena one hundred thousand kilometers across with walls that combatants below the Mage Emperor Realm cannot destroy, judges whether fights are benign or malicious, and suppresses arguing Emperors with an immediate burst of Death Magic. These applications combine technical mastery with authority; their limitation is political legitimacy, since every ruling is scrutinized by peers strong enough to challenge her collectively (Chapters 961–968).

Her disguise and containment work is similarly sophisticated. She encases Shang in high-grade ore, isolates his perception and communication, presents him as an ancient machine, opens portals at safe depths, and hides kilometer-scale Abomination cages beneath layered Magic Circles. These methods defeat ordinary imperial inspection but depend on secrecy and on the other Emperors accepting her claimed expertise. At the supplied endpoint, Kali has also witnessed and comprehended the level six Death Concept Terminus after all life ends, though the story does not show her deploying it in a later fight before Alex kills her (Chapters 983–986, 1024–1026, 1031).

Relationships

Adam

Adam trains Kali after Lucius awakens her and becomes the one person around whom her intense emotions organize themselves. Their Life and Death affinities make the relationship deliberately paradoxical: Adam gladly surrenders his social life to her, while Kali loves, possesses, wounds, and wishes to kill him without being able to accept losing him. Adam's final choice preserves her life and Abaddon's opportunity at the cost of his own existence. Kali keeps his Inheritance Sphere afterward, turning his sacrifice into the material center of the imperial succession conflict (Chapters 808–814).

Abaddon

Abaddon is Kali and Adam's son and the person to whom Kali ultimately cedes strategic leadership. She spends much of the imperial era trying to secure the Mana required for his promotion, manipulates the Grand Tournament to preserve his prospective ally, and later follows his decision to support Shang rather than fight for sole rule over Aterium. Abaddon continues calling her Mother even while referring to Adam by name, marking their bond as his only acknowledged family attachment. Their shared Death Affinity also allows both to comprehend Terminus after the world is emptied of life (Chapters 808–814, 947–948, 993–1026).

Gregorio

Kali's contempt for Gregorio precedes the imperial conflict. She considers him weak, resents Lucius's repeated praise of him, and provokes a confrontation that ends with Adam's death. Tens of thousands of years later, their mutual need for Shang forces cooperation without reconciliation. Gregorio supplies the Archivist threat and political leverage; Kali supplies legitimacy, access, and overwhelming Death Magic. They fight together at the end, but Kali still understands him as a useful former enemy rather than a restored friend (Chapters 808–814, 957–986, 1004–1013).

Shang

Kali first treats Shang as a strategic asset selected by Abaddon. She protects his tournament route, conceals him during the Abomination-cage operation, and helps keep him alive during the imperial battle. Once his true body appears, the balance disappears: she recognizes that her power is irrelevant beside a being formed through Entropy. Shang rewards her earlier assistance by sparing her, but that protection ends when he leaves Aterium. Alex judges her participation in the old world's destruction rather than her bargains with Shang and executes her (Chapters 957–986, 1004–1031).
