Gregorio

Gregorio, the Lightning Emperor, is the ancient ruler of the Lightning Manor, Lucius Volstad's former second-in-command, and the imperial patron who turns Shang from a dangerous anomaly into his chosen route beyond Aterium. His support gives Shang the resources and political opening to challenge the established order, while Gregorio's longing for adventure repeatedly draws him into compromises that he recognizes as selfish.

Biography

Guardian of the Lightning Manor

Gregorio initially governs from a quiet study while the rising number of Abominations forces him to confront the return of the Child of Calamity. He had volunteered to keep that threat in check, yet the other Emperors withheld meaningful help until cities began disappearing. Frustrated by their opportunism but responsible for his territory, he widened the search to young Adepts and dispatched Lightning Manor personnel across its Areas. His complaint that the danger had once seemed like “two ants instead of one” shows both his immense scale of perspective and the complacency that prolonged the search. (Chapters 372 and 701)

His stewardship is not purely punitive. When an ancient Weapon Master Star Map surfaced in Area 23, Gregorio recognized its maker and treated the discovery as a welcome link to an era he remembered fondly. He admitted that the purge of other Paths had gone far beyond Lucius's angry decree, regretted the destruction of their inheritances, and authorized a limited resurgence by balancing the warrior text with a Mage Star Map. Rather than seize the original or hunt its unexplained donor, he ordered it returned to the young warrior who had received it, choosing curiosity and restraint over institutional control. Shang enters the imperial order

When Shang reached the Lightning Manor, Gregorio was still directing the Child of Calamity search and venting to Wester about the other Empires' belated cooperation. Gregorio remotely examined Shang with a spell that returned altered waves of color and form, reading an almost metal-cold personality, unmatched motivation, and a buried core of pain and regret. He judged that Shang might one day sacrifice the world for power, but also saw a capacity for humanity that distinguished him from King Sanctified Death. Unable to settle the danger cleanly, Gregorio chose a provisional compromise: Wester was to treat Shang as a King Contender while Gregorio deferred a final decision. (Chapters 701–704)

Shang's sixfold Spirit Sense eventually forced a personal audience. Gregorio tested his values through a metaphor about nurturing a dangerous beast, then pressed him on why power mattered when he did not want rule, status, or freedom. The answers disturbed Gregorio, but they also reframed Shang as a profoundly damaged person clinging to one purpose rather than a conventional conqueror. That distinction mattered: Gregorio's caution did not disappear, but he began assessing whether an agreement with Shang could be more dependable than an attempt to control him. (Chapters 749–752)

The audience changed decisively when Shang revealed the hidden God, Earth, and Lucius's death. Gregorio verified the strange origin of Shang's sword, heard that the God had killed his oldest friend, and became fascinated by the possibility of worlds beyond Aterium. He therefore offered the Lightning Manor's full support in exchange for Shang sparing Gregorio and as many surviving Emperors as the world's Mana allowed, then leaving Aterium with them. This was not simple trust: Gregorio calculated that Shang could also counter King Sanctified Death. Even so, his deepest motive was personal—the hope of escaping what he called a grey prison and adventuring again. (Chapters 753–757)

That hope altered the meaning Gregorio assigned to Shang. He increased Shang's allowance, opened expensive training areas, protected the secrecy of his true Spirit Sense, and spoke of him to Wester as a possible answer to both King Sanctified Death and the closed world. Gregorio knew that nurturing Shang could endanger the Lightning Manor, but Shang's promise resonated with the world, and Gregorio accepted it as an investment he expected to be repaid. From this point, his rule was divided between protecting his Empire and cultivating the person he believed could open the path beyond it. (Chapters 756–758)

Imperial war and a dangerous sponsorship

The murder of Queen Primordium appeared to Gregorio to be an imperial attack carried out beneath his nose. Convinced Kali was responsible, he invaded the Judgment Palace, killed two Mage Kings, and attacked her directly. His ordinary spells could pressure but not defeat her Abominable State, so he exposed the secret power Lucius had taught him: a limited form of Anti-Magic fueled by sacrificed Mana. Adam diverted the resulting attack from Kali, dying while the released force erased millions of kilometers of Aterium. Gregorio had intended to kill Kali, not Adam or the countless beings lost with him, and recognized the outcome as a catastrophic failure even while refusing the other Emperors' demand that he surrender his magic and accept lifelong confinement. Rather than submit, Gregorio threatened to break the bracelet that maintained Lucius's suppression of the Archivist. He used that danger to force two concessions: weakened peace laws that would make conflict and growth possible again, and a future tournament in which every King could compete for Adam's Emperor-Mana inheritance. The tournament was designed to give Shang a lawful route into the Ninth Realm, while the renewed war created the public stage on which Gregorio could display Shang as a conspicuous genius and thereby conceal that he was the Lightning Manor's even greater secret. Gregorio's grief and ambition thus became the political architecture of the long imperial war. (Chapters 814–818)

Gregorio's sponsorship grew increasingly personal and materially costly. He gave Shang thousands of books, a private communication pin, access to the Trial of Want, concealment magic, a replacement arm, protected training grounds, and powerful opponents purchased through imperial resources. When Shang admitted that the God had killed Lucin and forced him to kill Queen Primordium, Gregorio blamed the God rather than Shang and treated both their silences and his war against Kali as mistakes to learn from. He later accepted that Shang was the Child of Calamity, studied Entropy with him, and devised a black-pylon program that hid Abomination Lords beneath the Lightning Manor while an imperial magic circle disguised the true method. The alliance repeatedly tested how far Gregorio would protect his candidate. His pin shielded Shang from a trapped Mage King's barrage long enough for Gregorio to break the altered Defender Flag, suppress Shang's exposed condition, and confront the three hostile Emperors without surrendering the body for inspection. He then concealed Shang's identity and injuries, continued feeding his training, and defended his eligibility when the final tournament's rules were narrowed against warriors. Gregorio accepted restrictions on weapons and Weapon Mana, found Shang a partner when the event was changed into a team contest, and watched the tournament disqualify Shang despite those efforts. By the time Shang's final transformation began, Gregorio's support had carried him to the edge of the Sword King Realm but could no longer make that rise politically legitimate. Alliance at the end of Aterium

After Shang apparently died, Gregorio's conflict shifted from strategy to conscience. Wester argued that the powerful owed the world protection, and Gregorio agreed that preserving Aterium was right, yet he also continued the hidden plan that let Shang absorb Abomination Kings and approach the Sword King Realm. When Wester discovered the secret and confronted Shang, Gregorio allowed their fight to proceed, expecting Shang to win because Wester threatened the project. He mourned his custodian afterward and condemned his own selfishness, but did not reverse course: the possibility of a wider universe still outweighed his loyalty to the world and to the friend whose death he had permitted. (Chapters 979–994)

Gregorio subsequently allied with Kali, Abaddon, and later Linastra. At the ultimate tournament, he declared Shang's staged fight with Abaddon benign, revealing the alliance when Shang conceded. During the ensuing confrontation, Gregorio fueled Anti-Magic with an Inheritance Sphere to erase the combined attack of seven Emperors, then largely withheld his hand while Shang fought the Archivist and the remaining imperial coalition. His calm reflected knowledge rather than indifference: he had already seen enough of Shang's evolving body to understand that the battle was never equal. When Shang killed five former companions and emerged as the decisive power, Gregorio grieved for them but accepted the bargain's outcome. (Chapters 998–1012)

Shang honored the narrow terms of their deal, promised to take Gregorio beyond Aterium, and gave him time for farewells. Gregorio helped secure Shang's promise to absorb future Abominations and preserve the world after its death-and-life reset, then watched new life return while waiting to depart with Kali and Abaddon. The escape he had sacrificed so much to obtain never came. After Shang split away his remaining empathy into Alex, Alex judged Gregorio complicit in the destruction of the old world and killed him instantly, turning Gregorio's long-sought passage beyond Aterium into the final consequence of his own choices. Appearance and personality

Gregorio appears as a friendly old man with white hair and a long white beard, usually seated behind a desk with a book or tea rather than displaying imperial grandeur. His simple manner and peaceful smile contrast with the immense, spatially distorted library around him. In anger, that warmth disappears: during the Judgment Palace invasion his face becomes brutal and cold, purple lightning tears black holes through nearby space, and acquaintances struggle to reconcile the attacker with the approachable Emperor they knew. (Chapters 372, 410, 701, 749, 807–809)

He is talkative, distractible, and prone to extended complaints, with Wester serving as both trusted listener and the person who redirects him. Gregorio prefers books, memories, and conversation to administration, and repeatedly admits that he never wanted to rule an Empire; he had been happiest supporting Lucius and exploring with their group. That nostalgia coexists with uncertainty and avoidance. He postpones hard decisions, jokes when uncomfortable, and longs for simple answers, yet he can become calculating and merciless when a friend, his freedom, or Shang's future appears threatened. His later self-reproach shows that he understands the moral price of those calculations even when he refuses to abandon them. (Chapters 701–703, 750–756, 814, 980–993)

Abilities and progression

Gregorio is an established Mage Emperor whose magic ranges from large-scale elemental destruction to precision reality manipulation. The corpus does not show his original rise through the Mage path, but it establishes that he fought as Lucius's official second-in-command, later became one of Aterium's ruling Emperors, and continued refining his spells for more than 250,000 years. His greatest distinction is not raw Lightning Magic alone, but the breadth of his spellcraft and his dangerous, incomplete access to Entropy. (Chapters 511, 809–813)

Mage Emperor perception and control

Gregorio's Spirit Sense and analytical spells operate on an imperial scale. He can survey his territory, read the general auras of its most powerful inhabitants, and inspect selected pasts in seconds; his limitation is not range alone but the depth required to distinguish a concealed Child of Calamity among an enormous population. A separate personality-reading spell sends reality-warping waves over a target and returns information about motives and suppressed emotions. Shang's later disguises and unusual constitution still force Gregorio to combine such magic with direct conversation rather than treating the spell as infallible. (Chapters 411, 702–703, 750)

His surroundings show similar mastery. The Lightning Sea around the Manor is an effect of his mere presence, while his study compresses hundreds of kilometers and a vast library into an apparently ordinary room through Space, Time, and Gravity Magic. He opens long-range portals, alters bodies with the Concept of Change, constructs protective enchantments, and controls lightning finely enough to peel away Shang's Domain of Entropy without burning the nearly dead body inside it. The pin he gives Shang also carries a limited shield able to withstand a rapid barrage from a Peak Mage King, although repeated full-power attacks exhaust it. (Chapters 749, 805, 862, 894, 930–931)

Symphony of Destruction and the Three Bolts of Heaven

The Symphony of Destruction combines different elements and kinds of Mana into an immense, concentrated offensive spell. Against Kali it makes the world itself seem like a weapon, but her superior control simply erases the attack, demonstrating that scale alone cannot overcome a stronger Emperor's specialized defense. Gregorio then condenses a disk of Mana into the Three Bolts of Heaven. Each successive bolt adapts to Kali's responses: the first is warped away, the second scatters into dust, and the third resists her control strongly enough that she must use both hands to split it. Casting the sequence consumes substantial Mana and focus, leaving Gregorio sweating. (Chapters 809–810)

Gregorio's follow-up spell inverts the world's colors and takes control of the grey mist Kali used to suppress his earlier attacks. He releases the stored power around her at point-blank range and initially confines the black domain that follows. The technique is precise enough to focus the detonation on Kali without forcing Adam to protect the surrounding population. Its limitation is the gulf between them: once Kali enters her Abominable State, Gregorio can stop a claw with a sustained barrage of Emperor-level lightning, but he cannot survive the many equivalent attacks she can still produce. Partial Anti-Magic and Entropy

Gregorio learned a fragment of Lucius's Anti-Magic in the True Mage Realm and hid it at Lucius's request, using it only when an opponent had to be eliminated and attributing those victories to luck. The technique is recorded in a black booklet and does not reproduce Lucius's cost-free control. Gregorio must sacrifice Mana, and he later explains that he can release only about thirty percent of the stored power as Entropy. The converted force eliminates Mana rather than merely overwhelming it, so the fuel is permanently removed from Aterium and cannot regenerate like ordinary spell expenditure. Its representative uses show both its reach and its danger. Gregorio sacrificed two dead Mage Kings' Mana in an attempt to kill Kali; Adam diverted the attack, causing it to erase a vast corridor of the continent and kill him instead. Much later, Gregorio converted the Mana in an Inheritance Sphere to nullify the combined offensive spell of seven Emperors. The power can answer attacks far beyond his normal defense, but every use consumes an irreplaceable reserve and risks destroying the world Gregorio nominally protects. It is therefore an emergency weapon and a moral liability, not a freely sustained domain or proof that Gregorio mastered Lucius's full power. (Chapters 810–813, 1005)

Scholarship, strategy, and latest state

Gregorio's library holds billions or trillions of records from many Paths, and his practical scholarship lets him identify ancient weapons, reconstruct lost terminology, design concealment magic, and build an imperial-scale circle whose structure other Emperors cannot quickly decipher. He uses those capabilities institutionally: the circle provides a cover for Shang's placement of Abomination Lords in black pylons, allowing the Lightning Manor to redirect personnel from containment to war. His planning also produces the King tournament, Shang's public cover, secret training arrangements, and layered political threats involving the Archivist. These strategies are effective precisely because they combine magical knowledge with his understanding of the other Emperors' fears. (Chapters 410–411, 749, 814–818, 934–935)

At the supplied endpoint, Gregorio remains a Mage Emperor with all of these abilities until Alex kills him before he can mount a defense. The story never shows a later formal realm advancement, nor does it establish that his partial Anti-Magic becomes more efficient. His latest demonstrated combat contribution is still the black booklet's sphere-fueled negation during the final imperial battle; afterward, Shang's power eclipses Gregorio so completely that influence, bargains, and observation matter more than direct combat. • Shang: Gregorio first regards Shang as a dangerous future calamity, then sponsors him as a counterweight to Abaddon and as the key to worlds beyond Aterium. Their friendship-like partnership remains transactional: Gregorio supplies protection, knowledge, political cover, and resources, while Shang promises survival and passage out of the world. The agreement is honored only narrowly and ultimately leads to Gregorio's death at Alex's hands.
• Wester: Wester is Gregorio's custodian, closest subordinate, trusted listener, and moral counterweight. Gregorio relies on him to translate distracted imperial decisions into governance, but later lets him confront Shang because Wester's principles threaten the secret plan. Gregorio mourns him sincerely while admitting that his desire for adventure outweighed the life of his friend.
• Lucius Volstad: Gregorio follows Lucius from their Apprentice years, serves as his official second-in-command, and remains defined by nostalgia for their adventures. Lucius teaches him a fragment of Anti-Magic and entrusts him with safeguards connected to the Archivist. Learning of Lucius's death transforms Shang from a mere strategic asset into Gregorio's possible route to revenge, discovery, and a reunion with the wider unknown.
• Kali: Gregorio and Kali are old companions whose rivalry culminates in the catastrophic Judgment Palace battle. He believes she killed Vana, tries to kill her, and accidentally kills Adam instead; much later, they become covert allies around Shang and Abaddon. Once Aterium is remade, Gregorio proposes that they travel together for safety, but Alex kills both before they can leave.
• Abaddon: Gregorio initially creates the tournament to prevent Abaddon from taking uncontested imperial power and to give Shang a lawful chance to defeat him. Their interests later converge around leaving Aterium and confronting the established Emperors, placing Gregorio in Abaddon's final alliance despite his long suspicion of Abaddon's intentions.
