Shang Tianyan

Shang Tianyan is Huyang City's leading artifact refiner and Luo Feng's first genuine friend in the Land of Origin. He welcomes Luo Feng before fame makes the newcomer useful, teaches him body-refining principles, and later sacrifices his life to expose Divine Monarch Xue Yun. Biography

Friendship without calculation

Shang Tianyan meets the newly arrived Luo Feng at Dream Flower Tower and immediately offers companionship. His openness is habitual—he likes meeting new Eternal True Gods and uses his artifact-refining connections to help them navigate Huyang City—but it is not empty social performance. He provides practical intelligence about the city's grades, legions, ruling family, and dangers without demanding a favor, and he continues treating Luo Feng as a peer when others begin courting him only after the Blood Python Association submits. That timing is why Luo Feng later distinguishes Shang from his many acquaintances. (Chapters 1502, 1505–1506, and 1548)

Their friendship develops through craft and trust. Shang explains the Primal Chaos Great Strength Diagram's body-refining theory, helps Luo Feng understand the later refinements, and is willing to teach more when Luo Feng learns with startling speed. Luo Feng in turn becomes a deterrent that keeps the Shi Kingdom's agents from abducting Shang with other formation specialists. Shang values that protection but does not exploit it; the only urgent favor he asks is help for another person's children, and he deliberately keeps his own most dangerous decision away from Luo Feng. The cost of protecting Huyang City

Divine Monarch Xue Yun's assault kills more than eight thousand Heavenly Flame Sect disciples among billions of other victims. Shang mourns them as individuals rather than replaceable subordinates, remembering the effort by which an orphaned disciple earned direct instruction. The massacre turns his general affection for Huyang City into a specific responsibility. Suspecting that his old companion and romantic rival Sang Shuiyun is Xue Yun's hidden identity, Shang prepares a secret letter, places a Karmic Tracing Order, arranges his estate, and says farewell without revealing the plan to Luo Feng. He knows an investigation may kill him, but regards stopping further slaughter as a meaningful use of his life. (Chapters 1546–1547)

Shang confronts Sang Shuiyun alone and confirms the truth when the other man's true body begins escaping. Their argument exposes a moral divide between two lonely immortals: Sang Shuiyun wants strength regardless of lives destroyed, while Shang finds value in teaching, friendship, memory, and the world's ordinary pursuits. Shang attacks despite knowing he cannot win, testing the confirmed enemy's strength while his messages preserve the identification. Xue Yun dissolves his body and True God's Heart, but the tracing order gives the Yu Kingdom and Luo Feng a way to hunt him. Death, consequence, and vengeance

News of Shang's death changes Luo Feng's priorities. He realizes his friend stayed silent to avoid involving him and reads the letter that leaves Luo Feng both Shang's possessions and gratitude. While initially searching for Xue Yun, Luo Feng and Morosa find and kill Yutian Yi, Yutian Xu, and several associates without using Shang's tracing token. Only afterward does the city owner's mansion hand Luo Feng the Karmic Tracing Order, which he activates to locate Xue Yun beyond Huyang City and complete the pursuit. The aftermath also reveals Shang's institutional legacy: disciples who received opportunity through the Heavenly Flame Sect mourn a teacher whose inclusive standards gave ordinary cultivators a path into artifact refining. Shang cannot participate in the later rise of the Blade River Sect, but his choice remains part of Luo Feng's moral history. Later characters cite Xue Yun's death as proof of Luo Feng's power, while Luo Feng remembers the man whose friendship preceded that reputation. Shang does not create Luo Feng's compassion for ordinary beings, which is already established; instead, his evidence gives that existing conviction an intimate cost and prevents Xue Yun from continuing behind a civilian identity. Restored from a past timeline

After Luo Feng becomes powerful enough to control his Origin World, he reaches into a past timeline and restores Shang Tianyan ten thousand epochs after his death. Shang awakens with his memory intact in surroundings resembling his family's cave mansion from his youth; the corpus does not say that his body itself has become youthful. Luo Feng explains the resurrection and then restores 125 people Shang cared for—his wife, children, parents, brother, companions, fellow refiners, and a regretted disciple—so the new life repairs losses that had shaped Shang's earlier loneliness rather than merely returning him to service. The reunion completes the value dispute that preceded his death. Shang had told Xue Yun that true feeling and a life one could face sincerely mattered more than domination; Luo Feng's gift makes those attachments the center of his restored existence. Shang Tianyan is a tall, mountainous or burly man whose physical presence reflects the body he has refined as a mechanical treasure. He normally approaches others with an easy smile, enthusiastic conversation, and little concern for status. After the massacre his sorrow becomes visible, but he retains the warmth to say farewell gently and the composure to face Sang Shuiyun without revealing fear. (Chapters 1502, 1546–1547, and 1914)

His defining trait is an active love of life despite profound personal loss. Shang makes friends, teaches disciples selected through open tests, studies craft with fellow daoists, and pursues Dream Flower Tower Master partly because her illusion resembles his deceased wife. He can also be secretive and strategically exact: he anticipates his own death, separates the evidence among a Karmic Messenger Order, letters to multiple recipients, and a remotely stored tracing token, and refuses to disclose the plan even when Sang Shuiyun recognizes that a backup exists. Artifact refining and body construction

Shang is publicly ranked among Huyang City's best artifact-refining masters, though Xue Yun recognizes that his true attainments exceed the reputation of a craftsman who does not compete for rank. He understands mechanical schools, formations, material combinations, and the Primal Chaos Great Strength Diagram well enough to guide Luo Feng through the theory of three body refinements. His most unusual work is his own godly body, refined like a Mechanical Stream Secret Treasure. Shang prepares a Karmic Tracing Order containing Sang Shuiyun's cause and effect, a Karmic Messenger Order that signals his death, and secret letters to several authorities.
