Tattered Book

The Tattered Book, titled Legend of the Calamity, preserves the Fang family’s account of its first ancestor, Cleave Fang. Its record prepares Michael to recognize the Heroic Summon Cleave Fenrir and interpret the Calamity’s Spear Art, although the book itself is never explicitly shown to possess supernatural power.

History

Fang-family chronicle

Michael carries the old book to school and wakes from a vision with it resting against his chest. He compares the vision with a remembered passage and finds the events identical, but the narrative does not establish that the object caused the experience. His family treats its contents as the unblemished truth about their first ancestor, and the book is described as one of a kind, preserving a history that would otherwise have been forgotten. Daniel Fang distrusts it emotionally, blaming the ancestor recorded inside for the family’s misfortune rather than demonstrating that the physical book is cursed. (Chapters 1–5)

Guide to Cleave’s identity

Michael has read the chronicle more than ten times and can recite it, making it an important store of private Fang knowledge after he enters the Origin Expanse. Its references to people with multiple Soultraits help him accept his own unusual condition. More decisively, the limited description of the Calamity’s Spear Art—an art founded on true feelings and intrusive thoughts—lets him identify the behavior of his disappointing Heroic Summon. The book calls the ancestor Cleave Fang, while Michael notes that Cleave Fenrir’s name has vanished from public history. The chronicle’s last documented role is therefore evidentiary: it supplies the connection that outsiders cannot make. (Chapters 9–18)

Abilities and properties

• The cover and pages are old and tattered, and the work’s displayed title is Legend of the Calamity. No author, date, material, enchantment, Artifact rank, or method of preservation is given. (Chapters 1–5)
• The Fang family regards it as a truthful, unique record of its first ancestor. That belief is supported when Michael’s vision matches its account, but neither the book’s own source nor every statement within it is independently verified. (Chapters 2 and 5)
• It records that multiple Soultraits exist and describes the Calamity’s Spear Art as a vile or wicked technique rooted in its wielder’s genuine feelings and intrusive thoughts. The description is sparse rather than an instructional manual. (Chapters 9 and 14)
• It uses Cleave Fang for the ancestor whom Michael also identifies as Cleave Fenrir. The chronicle preserves that suppressed identity, but the corpus does not explain who changed the surname or removed the name from public annals. (Chapter 18)
• The tattered experiment books found in the Kitsun Lord’s vault in Chapter 411 are separate generic books. Nothing in the local corpus connects them to Legend of the Calamity. (Chapters 5 and 411)
