Herms
Herms Lyzander is the hidden Emperor protecting the Solid Earth Kingdom and, before Astaria's rise, the strongest known human combatant. An experienced warrior nearing the end of his life, he breaks the Treaty of Eternal Peace to rebuild the Solid Earth military and pursue a larger plan involving Amletus, his son Roone, and the concealed protector Nawdren.
Biography
A hidden Emperor reshapes his kingdom
Herms is first identified as the force behind the Solid Earth Kingdom's abrupt consolidation. The kingdom suppresses internal crime, coerces sects, adventurers, and wandering cultivators into military service, and fields seven King Stage generals despite its former weakness. As an Emperor, Herms is forbidden by treaty from directing ordinary wars, so he works through the king and army while relying on denial and the difficulty of proving his intervention. His underlying project extends beyond winning the current war, but the corpus initially names only phases and does not fully explain his intended final order. (Chapters 325, 346, and 353–355)
When Nux infiltrates an army camp, Herms questions the generals but decides that chasing an elusive King Stage intruder is less important than advancing the plan. Ember's resignation from the Woods army gives him the opening to accelerate. Later evidence shows that he uses the conflict to pressure Alcimus, kills a Woods search party near the Forbidden Region, and communicates with Amletus. His generals are tools and potential sacrifices, while even Astaria cannot initially determine what larger advantage he expects from exposing his treaty violation. (Chapters 353–355, 501–504, 521–579, and 591–592)
Exposure and open war
The search party's disappearance and a recovered letter force the four human powers into an Emperors' Meet. Herms prefers delay while he and Roone assess the loss of contact with Amletus, but Roone pushes to begin their next phase. At the meeting, Herms masks the war as the king's harmless mischief and provokes Alcimus rather than admit involvement. Testimony and evidence expose the violation, and Herms responds with violence, then declares war when denial can no longer preserve the plan. (Chapters 593–600)
The later revelation that Roone is also an Emperor explains part of Herms's confidence, while Nawdren's appearance after their defeat confirms that the pair expected protection from a power above the Emperor Stage. The corpus does not establish how long Herms served Nawdren or whether he understood the full nature of that patron. His alliance gives him a hidden contingency, but it does not prevent the battlefield from separating him from Roone and placing him against Astaria, the opponent whose style had been built to deny his momentum. (Chapters 603–614)
Defeat beside his son
Herms fights Astaria with a greatsword, hidden poisoned needles, and the experience of countless battles. He briefly seizes the initiative after forcing her to block the needles, but Astaria has trained a counterstyle and continues reading his attacks. The decisive break is personal rather than technical: Herms sees Roone mutilated in Nux's custody and turns his attention away from Astaria. She uses the opening to sever both his arms, preventing the desperate attack she expects from a cornered Emperor. (Chapters 606 and 611–612)
After Nux beheads Roone, Herms burns his Life Force to escape Astaria's grip. Without arms he cannot carry out a final strike, so he uses Nux's nearby spike to pierce his own neck, denying Astaria the killing blow. Nawdren arrives only after Herms and Roone are dead. A later Herms in the Trial Tower sequence is part of a constructed counterfactual history rather than a resurrection, leaving his main-continuity status unchanged. (Chapters 612–618 and 1423)
Appearance and personality
Herms is a muscular older man with wrinkles, black-and-white hair, brown eyes, thin eyebrows, and a structured, still-handsome face. His white hair marks an age at which most cultivators would enter seclusion. Herms instead accepts that he is near the end of his lifespan and remains active; one account estimates about two decades, while Astaria later gives a broader estimate, so his precise remaining lifespan is uncertain. (Chapters 353, 501, and 593)
He is calculating, intimidating, proud, and accustomed to obedience. Subordinates tremble under his questions, yet he can abandon an unproductive investigation and redirect attention to the strategic objective. At the Emperors' Meet his mock apologies and insults show a taste for provocation. His harsh instrumental treatment of generals contrasts with intense love for Roone: seeing his son's condition breaks the discipline that had sustained him through the duel and directly enables his defeat. (Chapters 353–355, 573, 593–598, and 612)
Abilities and cultivation
Emperor cultivation and battlefield mastery
Herms is an Emperor Stage mana cultivator whose strength rests on long combat experience rather than talent alone. Astaria describes him as the world's former strongest being, with an unbreakable will and mastery earned through countless battles. He reinforces his body and attacks with mana and uses a large greatsword whose weight rewards continuous momentum: once he pushes Astaria onto the defensive, successive blows overpower her guard and make it difficult for him to stop or redirect the weapon. Astaria counters by denying him that momentum and forcing awkward defensive positions. (Chapters 545 and 606–611)
The corpus supplies no named elemental affinity, cultivation method, or Law for Herms. His threatening aura, speed, strength, tactical timing, and weapon control are demonstrated consequences of Emperor cultivation, not separate named techniques. His latest battle also establishes a practical limit: experience cannot compensate for divided attention, and losing both arms removes his capacity to use the greatsword or deliver a conventional final attack. (Chapters 606–612)
Poisoned needles and Life Force burning
Herms conceals poisoned needles and throws them while fighting with the greatsword. Their poison is described as capable of killing a King Stage cultivator within about ten seconds and slowing an Emperor enough to become vulnerable. Astaria's purple-black armor repels the first surprise volley, and she blocks later needles aimed across her face, hands, and feet. The needles therefore provide distraction and positional advantage but are not shown penetrating a prepared Emperor's defense; their manufacture, antidote, and exact dose are unknown. (Chapters 606 and 611)
As an Emperor's last resort, Herms can burn Life Force and convert it into an exceptionally pure, high-output form of mana. Activation consumes lifespan and is signaled by a strange surge of energy; it lets him break free from Astaria even after defeat. The state is temporary and fatal if sustained, not a permanent cultivation advancement. Because Astaria had already severed his arms, Herms cannot turn the increased output into a killing attack and uses the movement it grants to commit suicide. (Chapters 612 and 618)
Relationships
- Roone: Roone is Herms's son, hidden fellow Emperor, and partner in the Solid Earth plan. Herms's love for him overrides battlefield discipline, and Roone's torture and death precipitate Herms's defeat and suicide. (Chapters 593, 603–604, and 611–612)
- Astaria: Astaria once admired Herms as the strongest warrior in the world, then investigates his treaty violation and defeats him with a style designed to counter his greatsword momentum. (Chapters 501–545 and 593–612)
- Nux: Nux's infiltration first alerts Herms to an unknown enemy. In the final battle Nux defeats and kills Roone, becoming the target of Herms's last rage before Herms takes his own life. (Chapters 353–355 and 607–612)
- Amletus: Amletus is Herms's covert ally. Their correspondence links Skadi support to the Solid Earth conspiracy, but Amletus dies before their joint plan can be completed. (Chapters 582–592)
- Nawdren: Nawdren is the higher-stage patron expected to protect Herms and Roone. He appears only after both men are dead, identifies them as his subordinates, and seeks revenge on their killers. (Chapters 612–618)
- Alcimus: Herms targets Alcimus through the Woods war and mocks him at the Emperors' Meet. Their conflict becomes open war once the treaty violation is exposed. (Chapters 521–598)
Items
- Unnamed greatsword: Herms's primary weapon, suited to heavy, momentum-driven attacks. It is not given a supernatural name or independent power, and its custody after his death is unknown. (Chapters 606–612)
- Poisoned needles: Concealed projectiles carrying poison lethal to Kings and debilitating to Emperors if it penetrates. Astaria's armor and active defense counter them, and the remaining supply is not traced after the battle. (Chapters 606 and 611)
