Shax

Shax is a faceless Nightgaunt created through Lux’s Skeleton Generator. A mutation gives him power beyond Lux’s original ability to command, but after the Sacred Class unlocks obedience he becomes a high-speed hunter, scout, interrogator, and aerial defender.

Biography

The Dragon kingdoms and the Abyss

Lux releases Shax from a bone cocoon after gaining the authority needed to control monsters he creates. The Nightgaunt’s SS+ rating, speed, clones, and varied skill set immediately place him just below King Leoric in the army. He subdues an Argonaut Winged Serpent rather than killing it, then accepts assignments ranging from border reconnaissance with Zagan to aerial combat against Cockatrices. These choices establish him as more than a blunt summon: he can judge surrender, relay intent without speech, and adapt his speed to capture, scouting, or battle. (Chapters 680, 685–686, 694, 702)

Shax’s most distinctive service is covert coercion. His nonlethal Tickle skill forces Amir and Sam to reveal Twilight Rain’s network, lets him distinguish truthful answers, and supports long-range operations with Sid. He later appears among the army Hereswith judges capable of holding a High-Ranker, survives deployment against Demigod forces, and throws himself in front of an attack aimed at Lux. His loyalty is absolute, matching his profile’s declaration that he needs only his master’s soul. (Chapters 718–724, 736–738, 758, 905–906)

The rescue from the Abyss and the final war

When Lux returns to action, Shax answers Heaven’s Call and cuts Abyssal monsters apart before they can react. By the final war he is listed among the Demigod-rank forces only a tier below the alliance’s most exceptional fighters, leading undead armies against Golden Abominations. He also joins Bedivere in intercepting breath attacks aimed at Edea’s floating headquarters. The progression is functional rather than separately staged: Shax ends the corpus as a loyal, high-speed defender whose priority remains Lux’s people and stronghold. (Chapters 1144, 1187, 1208)

Appearance and personality

Shax is an alien-looking Nightgaunt at least three meters tall, with no face, bat-like wings, clawed hands, and a long spiked tail. The absence of features makes his intent unreadable to strangers, but posture, nods, and Lux’s bond communicate it clearly. He is silent, maliciously playful when allowed to tickle captives, reluctant to stop an interrogation, and nevertheless disciplined enough to hold back before victims lose their minds. Toward Lux he is obedient and immediately self-sacrificing. (Chapters 680, 685, 718, 723, 906)

Nightgaunt abilities and hunting mechanics

Shax’s listed unique skills are Dream Walker, Dream Eater, Soundless Scream, Dark Bullets Barrage, Tickle, and Doppelganger, all at EX grade. His active arsenal includes Tail Lash, Sky High Dive, Razor Wings, Night Slash, and Hunter’s Mark; Echo Location, Baneful Presence, and Air Strider support detection, intimidation, and aerial movement. Doppelganger creates two equally deadly clones, while his high agility lets him disappear from observers’ sight and strike airborne targets before they respond. (Chapters 680, 685, 694)

Tickle is explicitly nonlethal: a victim cannot die from it even while laughing to the point of begging for death, which makes it effective for interrogation but dependent on the target remaining conscious enough to answer. His faceless body prevents speech, so he communicates through gestures, telepathy, and his bond with Lux. Shax’s original mutation also exceeded Lux’s command rank, forcing containment until the Sacred Class changed the control rule; his power therefore began as a liability before becoming a reliable asset. (Chapters 680, 718, 724, 736, 760)
