Moriarty

Moriarty is the intimidating general commanding the Ammar Kingdom inside the Gate of War. He combines ruthless military doctrine with exceptional defensive swordsmanship, making his death the central objective that Lux and the Yelan forces must achieve to clear the dungeon campaign.

Biography

The Lionheart Tournament and the Hidden Domain

Moriarty tells the hired Vahan mercenaries that any method is acceptable because victors write history, then rewards Malcolm with a battalion after recognizing his tactical value. Their offensive plan initially pressures the Yelan defenses, but Lux and Asmodeus answer with corpse explosions that encircle the Ammarian command. Moriarty improvises a shelter, survives repeated assaults through protective charms, and nearly kills Watson after turning their duel with a feint. Cai interrupts, destroys his final protection, and batters him to death, ending the campaign despite his refusal to surrender. (Chapters 315, 318, 320, 322–323, 326)

Heaven’s Gate and the continental wars

Moriarty’s only later role is the military lesson created by his defeat. Ammarian officers remember that the Yelan Army destroyed his force by detonating corpses and add powerful Clerics to later formations in hopes of preventing the tactic from returning. When Lux repeats the method, General Phobus finally recognizes the same necromantic trap. Moriarty remains dead, but the consequences of his loss change the kingdom’s doctrine and make later commanders wary of apparently ordinary battlefield casualties. (Chapter 463)

Appearance and personality

Moriarty is extremely tall and thin, clean-shaven, pale, and ascetic-looking, with a presence that intimidates experienced soldiers. He is cold, results-oriented, tactically curious, and ruthless about wartime methods. Under direct threat he remains resourceful and defiant, improvising an escape shelter and demanding a duel even after his army collapses. His contempt for interference persists to the end, when he curses Cai for breaking the duel that might have saved him. (Chapters 315, 318, 320, 322–323)

Abilities and skills

Moriarty is a Pseudo-Ranker who fights with a bastard sword and excels at parrying attacks from several directions. Perfect Counter lets him block Orion’s descending fist and hurl the four-meter golem away, while his defensive awareness stops Diablo, Ishtar, and ranged ambushes from landing cleanly. Three protective charms negate otherwise lethal hits one at a time, but they are consumable defenses rather than invulnerability; coordinated attacks and corpse explosions exhaust them. Once Cai destroys the last charm and pins him, Moriarty’s accumulated fatigue and injuries leave him unable to escape. The source speculates that his parry mastery may exceed Expert level but never confirms a formal skill grade beyond Perfect Counter. (Chapters 322–323)

Relationships

  • Malcolm — Moriarty’s hired specialist and temporary battalion commander. He values Malcolm’s results and adopts his plan against the Yelan defense. (Chapters 315, 318, 320)
  • Watson — The opposing Yelan general whom Moriarty nearly kills in a late duel before Cai intervenes. (Chapter 323)
  • Lux — The hidden Necromancer whose corpse-explosion strategy destroys Moriarty’s army and wears down his protections. (Chapters 320, 322–323)
  • Cai — Moriarty’s killer. Her charge interrupts his duel, breaks his last protection, and repeatedly smashes him until the dungeon confirms his death. (Chapters 323, 326)
