Malcolm
Malcolm Robles is a Vahan prodigy, the son of the empire’s Grand General, and the Guild Master of the Silver-Ranked Chaos Oath. He initially treats Lux as an inferior rival whose success threatens his own reputation. Repeated defeats and shared crises gradually replace that arrogance with practical respect, until Malcolm willingly fights beside former competitors in both Elysium and the Abyss.
Biography
The Lionheart Tournament and the Hidden Domain
At nineteen, Malcolm leads the Vahan expedition into the Domain of the Fallen while a Sealing Bracelet prevents him from crossing into the Initiate Rank. His father intends the restriction to teach humility, but Malcolm instead sees the Gate of Conquest as a chance to earn merit, protect his family’s standing, and force recognition of his talent. He follows the Emperor’s order to enter Hell Mode, schemes against the Yelan side, and underestimates Lux’s ability to reshape a battlefield. The failure damages both his pride and the expedition’s prestige; even after the official announcement clarifies that Lux cleared a different gate, Malcolm remains fixated on the Half-Elf whose methods denied him victory. (Chapters 311–325, 346)
Malcolm later returns as an Initiate, having trained hard to close the gap, and again taunts Lux before another dungeon campaign. His desire to restore his father’s reputation makes him serious about survival even when old opponents must cooperate. He warns companions against reckless deaths and continues after stronger competitors fall, showing that ambition can also sustain a team. These experiences do not erase his pride, but they teach him that command is more than declaring superiority: he must work under Lux’s leadership, adapt to unexpected threats, and accept that the rival he once dismissed repeatedly creates the path by which everyone survives. (Chapters 437, 461, 489, 506, 513–514)
The Dragon kingdoms and the Abyss
After the first Gate of Famine attempt fails, Malcolm defies the spectators’ expectation that everyone will abandon Lux and asks permission to enter a second time. His request carries anxiety but also conviction: earlier battles have taught him that Lux’s unconventional plans deserve a chance. He joins the coalition that survives the monster campaign and proceeds toward the Ammarian Kingdom, shifting from an imperial competitor pursuing solitary prestige into one representative among several factions willing to coordinate against a larger threat. (Chapters 650, 684, 690, 701, 704)
In the Abyss, Malcolm’s Deimos Wyvern dies protecting him, and he and Xander resist the Satyrs until they are physically unable to stand. After being rescued, he chooses freely to remain for Queen Rhiannon’s war because he wants to protect Julia, Piper, and Juniper and believes retreat would become a lasting regret. By the battle’s later stages he is a D-Ranker, still below Lux, but no longer explains the gap as luck. He fights with the coalition through ranged harassment when a full legion is beyond them, showing a mature willingness to contribute within his actual limits. (Chapters 871–873, 899–905)
Appearance and personality
Malcolm is introduced as a nineteen-year-old with dark-blue hair and matching eyes. He carries himself as a prodigy and leader, frequently crossing his arms, teasing rivals, or speaking with the confidence of someone accustomed to imperial privilege. His appearance remains recognizable after his promotion through the ranks. (Chapters 311, 437, 899)
He begins arrogant, competitive, and intensely concerned with status, but his ambition is tied to family and institutional expectations rather than simple vanity. Malcolm trains instead of accepting defeat, values strength earned through battle over ranks bought with Beast Cores, and resists even when victory seems impossible. His growing respect for Lux is reluctant but genuine, and his decision to protect people in the Abyss shows that loyalty can outweigh the safer return to his empire. (Chapters 311–315, 437, 506, 871–873, 899–905)
Combat and leadership abilities
Swordsmanship and rank
Malcolm is a trained sword user who reaches Initiate and later D-Rank through sustained campaigning. He favors direct martial combat and selects swords when given access to Queen Rhiannon’s vault. His effectiveness depends on conventional rank, equipment, experience, and teamwork; he cannot contend alone with Deimos Satyrs while still an Initiate, and even as a D-Ranker he recognizes that Lux’s C-Rank army is beyond him. The corpus does not assign him a named signature technique, so his strength is best understood as practiced swordsmanship rather than an undocumented special power. (Chapters 437, 506, 871–873, 901, 905)
Expedition command and tactical cooperation
As Guild Master and imperial expedition leader, Malcolm can plan assaults, stop a pursuit when information changes, and keep a team focused on mission goals. Early confidence makes him vulnerable to Lux’s deception and battlefield disruption. Later, he improves by accepting coalition command, coordinating against Deimos enemies, and using ranged attacks with other survivors when close combat against an entire legion would be suicidal. His leadership therefore develops from prestige-driven command toward realistic assessment of what his group can accomplish. (Chapters 311–320, 437–461, 506, 684–704, 905)
Relationships
- Lux: Malcolm’s rivalry with Lux begins in contempt and repeated defeat, then matures into respect grounded in shared dungeon and war experience. (Chapters 311–325, 437–506, 684–704, 905)
- Xander: Xander is a recurring coalition companion. The two resist the Satyrs together and later coordinate during the Abyssal War. (Chapters 690, 871–873, 905)
- His father: Malcolm’s father is the Vahan Grand General who seals his advancement to curb his arrogance. Much of Malcolm’s early drive comes from proving himself and protecting the family’s military reputation. (Chapters 311, 437, 506)
- Julia, Piper, and Juniper: Malcolm chooses to remain in the Abyss specifically to protect these three Succubi, accepting the risk of war by his own decision. (Chapter 899)
