Great General Garret
Great General Garret is the former supreme field commander of the Haca Dynasty and later the military steward of Heaven’s Gate. A disciplined swordsman and strategist, he begins as the leader of an invasion of the Wanid Kingdom. Defeat, betrayal within his own faction, and Lux’s rescue of his family lead him to pledge himself to the Half-Elf and rebuild his purpose around protecting a new home.
Biography
Heaven’s Gate and the continental wars
Garret enters the Wanid campaign as a calm High-Ranker commanding millions of soldiers. He rests exhausted troops despite impatient generals, assigns specialist teams against Barca and the Orc Warlords, and personally targets Lux once the necromancer overturns his plans. His foresight and swordsmanship make him dangerous, but they cannot compensate for collapsing morale, unexpected Undead, and the loss of the army’s war machines. When defeat becomes unavoidable, Garret’s priorities move from conquest to limiting casualties and protecting his wife Sarah and daughters from Ronan. Lux’s willingness to rescue that family, spare soldiers, and restrain his forces in the capital gives Garret a reason to negotiate rather than die for the dynasty. (Chapters 598, 609, 612–617, 622–625)
Garret pays heavily for the change of allegiance: his rank regresses from High-Ranker to C-Ranker, and former enemies still remember the Orcs killed under his command. He nevertheless pledges himself to Lux, brings his household and retainers into Heaven’s Gate, and supplies five hundred elite Initiates whom Keoza restores from crystal. Barca’s willingness to discuss past campaigns with him marks a hard-earned transition from enemy general to ally. As steward, Garret handles mobilization while Emma manages logistics and administration, giving Lux’s growing guild a professional command structure capable of governing people from many factions. (Chapters 623, 630–633, 682, 912)
Open Heaven’s Gate
During the final counteroffensive, Garret commands the floating fortress Edea and the forces of Heaven’s Gate after the world’s memory of Lux is damaged. He accepts Keoza’s account of the forgotten Guild Master, coordinates mobilization with Emma, and leads the guild into the alliance’s war rather than allowing uncertainty over its founder to paralyze it. Peace then places him in a more intimate test of judgment: when Gerhart confesses that he is dating Alexa and Emily, Garret weighs the Half-Elf’s character, grants his blessing, and later acknowledges him after a close fight. His daughters’ joint wedding shows the former conqueror settled into the family and community he chose after Haca. (Chapters 1166, 1229, 1234)
Appearance and personality
Garret is a blond-haired man in his early thirties whose calm demeanor carries more authority than overt intimidation. Even aggressive High-Rankers obey him because he has repeatedly defeated them and proven his judgment across a decade of campaigns. After sacrificing vitality in defeat, he briefly appears aged and weakened; water from the Spring of Life restores part of his youth, though not his lost rank. (Chapters 598, 623)
He is methodical, proud, and protective. Garret can be ruthless when he believes an enemy threatens his army, yet he plans around troop exhaustion and civilian casualties rather than treating people as disposable pieces. His deepest loyalty is ultimately to his family and trusted soldiers, not a dynasty that enables Ronan’s betrayal. That loyalty later broadens into stewardship: he accepts former enemies, manages unfamiliar guild members, and judges Gerhart by conduct rather than origin. (Chapters 598, 612–625, 630–633, 912, 1229–1234)
Martial and command abilities
Swordsmanship and future sight
At his peak, Garret is a High-Ranker capable of cutting apart a powerful cold spell with one sword stroke and pressuring Lux through a battlefield. His defining perception allows him to see ten seconds into the future, but only when an action will attack him directly or indirectly. Broad environmental control can exploit that limit: Cornelia fills the battlefield with a thorny forest rather than relying on a single straightforward strike. His later regression to C-Rank reduces his raw power, so the corpus does not treat his old High-Ranker feats as permanently available without recovery. (Chapters 612–613, 623, 630)
Strategy, command, and stewardship
Garret organizes counter-units for elite enemies, rallies broken formations, judges when retreat is preferable to annihilation, and coordinates forces from a moving fortress. His leadership works through preparation and disciplined subordinates; misleading intelligence and unexpected powers can still unravel a technically sound plan. In Heaven’s Gate he divides responsibility with Emma, handling mobilization while she handles logistics, and his five hundred personally trained Initiates provide a loyal professional core rather than an improvised mob. (Chapters 598, 609, 612–613, 633, 912, 1166)
Relationships
- Lux: Garret changes from determined enemy to sworn subordinate after Lux spares his men and rescues his family. He later commands Lux’s guild during its master’s absence. (Chapters 612–625, 631–633, 1166)
- Barca: Barca is first Garret’s principal Orc adversary. Their postwar exchange of campaign knowledge demonstrates reconciliation without erasing the casualties between their peoples. (Chapters 609–613, 630)
- Sarah, Alexa, Emily, and Leah: Protecting his wife and daughters drives Garret’s break with Haca. In peace, he gives Alexa and Emily permission to marry Gerhart after satisfying himself that they will be cared for. (Chapters 617–630, 1229–1234)
- Emma: Emma is his administrative counterpart, sharing day-to-day responsibility for Heaven’s Gate whenever Lux is away. (Chapters 912, 1166)
