Adeline
Adeline is a Ranker-class Elf, the widow and later reunited wife of Vincent, and the biological mother of Lux. Her story moves from coerced separation and decades of mourning to recognition, vengeance against the man who destroyed her family, and a restored place in her son’s life.
Biography
Awakening and Leaf Village
Adeline gives birth to a child who is declared dead despite her clan’s healers’ efforts. Because a Half-Blood cannot be buried in Ashe Entheas, she names him Lux, kisses him farewell, and nearly jumps into the Avonlea River after the basket carrying him before the Patriarch forces her to sleep. The decision is not abandonment by choice: she fights to reclaim the infant she believes dead, and the name tablet she carves with magic becomes the only gift she can send with him. Unknown to her, Lux’s broken spirit later revives the body. (Chapters 5, 766)
Open Heaven’s Gate
Decades later, Adeline recognizes Vincent’s face and her own eye color in the adult Lux at Moss Village. She recounts her capture, forced auction, years as Vincent’s bodyguard, love, pregnancy, and the royal betrayal that killed him; Lux then chooses to embrace the familial identity his borrowed body grants him. Adeline joins him against King Yvar, deliberately restrains her Ranker strength while stoning the condemned king, and finally beheads him with no mercy. The act closes the grievance that dominated her life, after which she meets Vera, her future daughters-in-law, and Lux’s guild community instead of returning to isolation. (Chapters 1051–1066, 1070, 1086–1088)
The gods’ intervention later erases Lux from Adeline’s memory, but that loss is reversed with the world’s restoration. By the wedding she stands beside Vincent and smooths Lux’s suit like an attentive mother; she also punctures Vincent’s renewed talk of other women with a painful pinch. Her final role is domestic but consequential: she occupies the place at the front of the ceremony that grief and Elven law once denied her. (Chapters 1106, 1232)
Appearance and personality
Adeline is a beautiful Elf who appears to be in her early twenties despite her greater age, with green eyes matching Lux’s. Her face and emotions are unusually readable: she moves from disbelief and trembling recognition to open tears, maternal affection, embarrassment, and lethal resolve. She is sensitive to others’ gazes, nurturing toward Aurora and Lux’s other partners, and capable of severe violence when confronting exploitation. Her warmth is therefore not passivity; it coexists with pride, endurance, and an uncompromising judgment of King Yvar. (Chapters 1051–1056, 1063, 1086–1088)
Elven Ranker abilities and swordsmanship
Adeline is an established Ranker whose physical strength overwhelms an Apostle even before formal combat: while a slave collar is inactive, she lifts Vincent by his clothes and ignores his order to kneel. She later explains that Vincent bought her as a personal guard, and she protected him from assassins sent by his brothers. Her demonstrated magic includes carving a name into wood without tools, while her combat skill includes controlled throws and a clean sword decapitation. The corpus does not name her exact profession or spell list. (Chapters 5, 1053–1055, 1062–1063)
Her power is vulnerable to control effects despite her rank. An activated slave collar compels obedience, and the auction spell suppresses her thoughts until it is lifted. Conversely, restraint is one of her clearest strengths: when allowed to stone Yvar, she lowers her force to Apostle level so that a thrown rock does not kill him before the promised execution. Her latest appearances do not show further advancement, leaving her a capable Ranker whose most important postwar actions are familial rather than martial. (Chapters 1053, 1062–1063, 1232)
Relationships
- Lux: Adeline names and mourns the infant whose body becomes Lux’s vessel. Their reunion allows both to choose a mother-son bond despite the metaphysical complexity of his soul. (Chapters 5, 766, 1051–1066, 1232)
- Vincent: She begins as Vincent’s magically bound bodyguard, falls in love with him after he sacrifices royal status for her, and mourns him for decades before Lux restores him to family life. (Chapters 1053–1055, 1088, 1232)
- Vera: Adeline fears judgment from the woman who raised Lux, but Vera hears the full account of the river farewell and accepts that the separation was born from tragedy rather than selfishness. (Chapter 1065)
- Aurora: Aurora supports Adeline through Vincent’s story, and Adeline responds with maternal affection, inviting her to sleep beside her and treating her as a future daughter-in-law. (Chapters 1051–1056)
