Dongwook Ma — Solo Leveling

Dongwook Ma is the guild master of the Fame Guild and the tank chosen to lead Korea’s S-rank strike squad on Jeju Island. Famous as the country’s best tank, he combines a towering physique and massive shield with single-target provocation and defensive reinforcement. His lighthearted social manner disappears when people depend on him: at Jeju he directs the formation, absorbs the ant queen’s attacks, and repeatedly returns to the fight after injuries that would kill most hunters.

Biography

Korea–Japan training exchange

Dongwook joins the S-rank gathering organized to prepare for the joint Korean–Japanese operation on Jeju Island. He is immediately recognizable by his huge frame and judogi. During the physical tests, he spars against Yoonho Baek, another close-range S rank, and the two turn the exercise into a clash substantial enough to draw attention. Dongwook’s presence reflects the strategy behind Korea’s roster: where the Japanese supply greater numbers, Korea selects six specialists with extensive raid experience (Chapter 32).

He also notices Jinwoo Sung during the exchange. After Jinwoo’s confrontation with Ryuji Goto, Dongwook approaches with his usual booming good humor, grips Jinwoo’s shoulder and arm, and marvels at his physical development. Because the Fame Guild is composed mainly of mages and lacks powerful brawlers, he tries to recruit Jinwoo on the spot. The approach is friendly and direct rather than manipulative, though Jinwoo has already decided to establish a guild of his own (Chapter 33).

Leading the Jeju strike squad

On Jeju, Dongwook takes operational leadership of the Korean team. He monitors Japanese radio traffic through his earpiece, gathers the hunters into a huddle before entering the ant nest, and makes sure even the cameraman is included. He regards commanding such an exceptional team as an honor. Once underground, he constantly scans the tunnels because, as both leader and tank, he is responsible for protecting the mage at the front and detecting changes that could compromise the formation (Chapter 34).

The first guards fall easily, but the queen’s chamber requires deliberate division of labor. Dongwook identifies that he cannot contain the queen and all her guards alone. Haein therefore uses Provocation Vibration to draw the group of guards while he blocks the queen. His own Spirited Provocation fixes that single enormous target on him. He raises a shield almost as tall as his body, offers the silent prayer he makes before every battle, and holds his ground while the five damage dealers attack from behind him (Chapter 34).

The queen’s roar cannot break his stance, and her poison fails to incapacitate him. Even when she closes her sawlike mandibles around his torso, he continues protecting the formation and encouraging the attackers. Once the queen dies, Dongwook gives the team a thumbs-up rather than claiming the victory for himself. His attention turns immediately to communications, where he learns that Japan has stopped responding and the evacuation plan has failed. He contains his anger to avoid spreading panic and pushes the exhausted squad toward the exit as calmly as possible (Chapter 34).

Battle with the Ant King

The humanoid Ant King renders the team’s careful plan obsolete. Its aura alone drives hunters to their knees, yet Dongwook is the first Korean to move. The creature severs both his arms in a single exchange. Yoonho distracts it before it can kill the defenseless tank, and the hidden Byunggu Min completely regenerates Dongwook’s arms. Dongwook responds by charging shoulder-first into the Ant King and knocking it down, returning to the front the instant his body can function again (Chapter 34).

That recovery does not make the contest even. The Ant King strikes him down repeatedly and eventually hangs him upside down by the legs while slowly breaking his bones. This is a tactical attack on the group rather than mere cruelty: because Dongwook will die if healing stops, Byunggu must continuously pour magic into him and thereby reveals the healer’s position. After the Ant King kills Byunggu, Dongwook and the other survivors are left badly wounded and increasingly overwhelmed by the surrounding ants (Chapter 34).

Jinwoo’s arrival reverses the disaster. Dongwook is too injured to see the entire battle, but he can sense Jinwoo eradicating the ant swarm and understands what happened. Jinwoo’s healing restores Dongwook’s wounds and eyesight. Dongwook clasps his hand and thanks him directly, then quiets the confused Jongin because he trusts the scale of power he sensed. Even after rescue, Dongwook remains the team’s recognized leader when association officials collect the survivors’ account (Chapters 35–36).

Appearance and personality

Dongwook is a hulking, heavily muscled man who often wears a judogi. His build, grip, and enormous shield suit a hunter whose job is to put himself between monsters and less durable teammates. He is ordinarily cheerful, loud, and sociable, chortling through conversations and offering recruitment with little ceremony.

Under pressure, that joviality becomes disciplined composure. He studies every teammate before a mission, treats leadership as an honor, and suppresses his own fear and anger when displaying them would unsettle the group. He can hesitate when instinct and logic conflict, as he does before the Ant King reveals itself, but he never uses uncertainty as an excuse to abandon the front. His repeated charges after mutilation and healing are not mindless bravado; they are the function expected of the formation’s tank, carried out despite knowing how little damage he can inflict.

Abilities, skills, and rank

S-rank physical ability

Dongwook is an S-rank hunter described as the best tank in Korea. He possesses the strength to drive the Ant King off balance with a shoulder tackle, the stamina to lead a prolonged raid, and durability sufficient to survive the queen’s bite and poison while reinforced. These feats do not make him invulnerable. The Ant King removes both his arms instantly and later breaks his bones while Byunggu’s healing is the only thing keeping him alive (Chapter 34).

Spirited Provocation

Spirited Provocation is Dongwook’s specialized aggro skill. Unlike Haein’s wide-area Provocation Vibration, it focuses a single enemy’s hostility on him. Against the queen, that narrow effect is precisely what the team needs: Haein draws away the guards, Dongwook isolates the boss, and the damage dealers gain access to her exposed body. It is a control skill, not literal domination; its value depends on Dongwook surviving the attention he compels (Chapter 34).

Advanced Reinforcement and shield work

Dongwook uses Advanced Reinforcement to strengthen his defense while bracing behind a shield nearly his own height. The combination lets him withstand pressure, impact, biting mandibles, and poison that would overwhelm an ordinary tank. His technique is formation-oriented: he blocks routes, keeps enemies facing him, and creates safe attack lanes rather than pursuing kills. The shield is also a visible rallying point for teammates in the darkness of the ant cave (Chapter 34).

Command and raid awareness

Dongwook monitors communications, assigns tanking responsibilities, evaluates time limits, and controls the group’s emotional tempo. His leadership is practical rather than ceremonial. When Japanese contact disappears, he both relays the incomplete information and starts evacuation; when the Ant King appears, he understands that the leader must choose quickly even without adequate data. His limit is that no conventional Jeju plan anticipates an enemy vastly beyond the queen and the known S-rank scale.

Relationships

Jinwoo Sung: Dongwook first sees Jinwoo as the brawler his mage-heavy guild needs. After Jeju, respect becomes gratitude toward the hunter who heals him and saves the entire squad.
Yoonho Baek: A fellow guild master and close-range S rank. They spar during training and repeatedly protect one another against the Ant King.
Byunggu Min: The healer whose regeneration restores Dongwook’s severed arms and whose continued magic keeps him alive while the Ant King breaks his bones.
Haein Cha: A strike-squad teammate whose area provocation complements Dongwook’s single-target tanking against the queen.
Jongin Choi, Taegyu Lim, and the Korean squad: Dongwook leads them on Jeju and shapes his decisions around preserving the whole formation.
