Byunggu Min

Byunggu Min is Korea’s S-rank healer and the only healthy S rank known to retire simply because he hates fighting. He returns for the fourth Jeju raid out of loyalty to his friends, dies protecting them, and performs one last rescue through the shadow Jinwoo temporarily extracts from his body.

Biography

The S rank who walked away

Byunggu first appears among the Korean representatives meeting Japan about Jeju Island. Retirement has not changed his measured rank: he remains one of the very few healers able to support an S-rank strike team. Unlike hunters forced out by injury or declining power, he leaves while healthy because he no longer wants to fight magic beasts. He lives modestly rather than converting his status into the fortune expected of an S rank. (Chapters 18, 31)

His aversion is grounded in experience rather than cowardice. Earlier Jeju expeditions killed elite hunters, including Eunsuk, and taught Byunggu exactly what healing cannot prevent. When Yoonho Baek visits before the new operation, Byunggu refuses to participate and says openly that he hates returning to that violence. Yoonho does not manipulate him, treating the meeting as a possible final goodbye. That respect forces Byunggu to consider what will happen if his friend enters the nest without the country’s best healer. (Chapter 31)

Choosing Jeju

Byunggu ultimately joins as the Korean team’s sole healer because he believes Yoonho may be the first to die without him. He uses odd jokes to relieve tension in the helicopter, but the humor does not disguise his fear or the seriousness of the choice. He is not rediscovering a love of battle; he is accepting work he despises because people he cares about need a skill only he possesses. (Chapters 31, 33)

Inside the nest, Byunggu watches both the S-rank formation and the A-rank cameraman accompanying it. When the cameraman’s enthusiasm threatens to carry him too far forward, Byunggu’s normally easy manner becomes stern. Even his restrained S-rank presence overwhelms the lower-ranked man and makes the safety order unmistakable. (Chapter 33)

During the battle with the queen, acid blackens and damages the hunters’ skin. Byunggu continues healing through the assault, rapidly restoring injuries so the front line can keep attacking. His support allows the team to spend durability and health more aggressively than it could with ordinary potions or lower-ranked magic. (Chapter 34)

Hunted by the Ant King

The Ant King’s arrival turns Byunggu’s healing into both the team’s lifeline and his greatest vulnerability. He uses Camouflage to disappear while remaining stationary and keeps restoring wounded allies from concealment. The Ant King understands the formation and deliberately tortures Dongwook Ma, forcing the hidden healer to continue emitting magic. It follows the healing energy back to its source. (Chapter 34)

Once discovered, Byunggu cannot survive the Ant King at close range. His final conscious action is protective: he warns Yoonho to flee. The Ant King kills him, removing the only person capable of reversing the team’s catastrophic injuries and leaving the remaining S ranks near collapse. (Chapter 34)

One last act of healing

After Jinwoo defeats the Ant King, Haein lies critically wounded and ordinary medical treatment is too far away. Jinwoo locates Byunggu’s body and extracts his shadow despite the risk and emotional cost of commanding a dead human. The resulting elite shadow retains the healer’s highest-level magic and treats Haein comprehensively, restoring her breathing and pulse, closing wounds, and returning color to her face. (Chapters 35–36)

Jinwoo then releases the shadow instead of keeping an irreplaceable S-rank healer in his army. He understands that Byunggu hated combat in life and regards permanent conscription after death as a violation of that choice. Byunggu’s final contribution therefore remains consistent with his reason for returning to Jeju: healing a companion, not serving as a weapon. (Chapter 36)

Haein later recalls a message received while between life and death. Byunggu’s shadow had perceived the immense army and darkness connected to Jinwoo. Although it felt the Shadow Monarch’s absolute pull and even joy in obedience, the remaining human concern within the encounter tried to warn her that Jinwoo’s power was more menacing than other hunters understood. The message breaks off before becoming a complete judgment, so it should be treated as a warning born from what Byunggu perceived, not proof that he regarded Jinwoo as evil. (Chapter 44)

The rewritten world

When the Cup of Reincarnation reverses the dungeon era, the fourth Jeju raid never occurs. Byunggu is alive in the rewritten world, spared the choice and death that defined his final hunter mission in the erased timeline. (Chapters 75–77)

Appearance and personality

Byunggu is a relatively young man whose casual manner does not match the public image of an elite hunter. He is not ostentatiously wealthy and avoids projecting status in ordinary conversation. When he deliberately releases even part of his S-rank presence, however, a lower-ranked hunter immediately feels the difference. (Chapters 31, 33)

He is humorous, candid, compassionate, and deeply uncomfortable with violence. Byunggu admits fear and dislike where other hunters might perform bravery. His return to Jeju is therefore especially meaningful: courage for him is not enjoying danger, but entering it while fully aware of the cost. (Chapters 31, 33)

His protectiveness has a hard edge in combat. He orders the cameraman back, continues healing when the magic reveals his position, and spends his last breath warning Yoonho rather than pleading for himself. Loyalty, not ambition, is the center of his hunter identity. (Chapters 33–34)

Abilities, skills, and rank

S-rank healing

Byunggu can rapidly repair severe injuries in other S-rank hunters during active combat. His magic restores acid-damaged tissue, stabilizes fighters receiving repeated catastrophic wounds, and lets a strike team continue operating beyond normal physical limits. As an extracted shadow, the same ability restarts Haein’s failing vital functions and repairs her body comprehensively. (Chapters 34–36)

Healing requires continued magical output. That output can be detected by sufficiently powerful enemies, and Byunggu must divide attention among triage, positioning, and the changing condition of several allies. His death demonstrates that a healer’s power does not automatically provide equivalent close-range defense. (Chapter 34)

Camouflage

Camouflage hides Byunggu’s body and presence while he remains still. It allows him to support the team from a concealed position after the Ant King enters the battlefield. The skill has a critical tactical limitation: healing magic still creates a trace, and maintaining concealment restricts his ability to reposition. The Ant King exploits both facts. (Chapter 34)

S-rank physical and magical presence

Although his role is support, Byunggu possesses the baseline mana and physical presence of an S rank. He can intimidate an A-rank cameraman without physical force and withstand the environment of a raid that ordinary healers could not enter. The Ant King remains overwhelmingly beyond that baseline. (Chapters 33–34)

Triage and battlefield judgment

Byunggu identifies who is most likely to die, chooses where concealment will preserve his casting, watches a vulnerable noncombatant, and keeps healing even when doing so risks detection. His decision to join the operation is itself a strategic assessment: without an S-rank healer, Yoonho and the others have little margin against the queen. (Chapters 31, 33–34)

Shadow-state healing

Jinwoo’s extraction preserves Byunggu’s medical magic in shadow form. The shadow can obey direct healing orders and operate with the regenerative advantages of Jinwoo’s soldiers. This is not an ability Byunggu voluntarily develops in life, and Jinwoo ends the state immediately after Haein is safe. (Chapters 35–36)

Relationships

• Yoonho Baek: Byunggu’s close friend and the main reason he returns to Jeju. Yoonho respects his refusal, while Byunggu cannot accept leaving him without a healer.
• Haein Cha: A teammate saved by Byunggu’s temporarily extracted shadow. She later carries his incomplete warning about Jinwoo’s power.
• Dongwook Ma: The tank Byunggu heals under direct pressure; the Ant King uses Dongwook’s injuries to locate him.
• Jinwoo Sung: The hunter who extracts Byunggu for one final rescue, then releases him out of respect for his hatred of battle.
• Eunsuk: A hunter lost on an earlier Jeju expedition whose death contributes to Byunggu’s retirement and fear of returning.
