Gabriel

Gabriel is a senior Archangel of the Pontiff’s Citadel, most consistently titled the Messenger of Death and occasionally called the Angel of Death. The two phrases refer to the same man, not separate Archangel offices. Gabriel combines high-level Angelism with investigation and covert asset management. His work in the Shattered Starfields helps expose the Citadel’s alliance with pirates and genetic experimentation, after which Metatron must protect him from the Pontiff’s anger.

Biography

Messenger of Death in the failed trap

Gabriel helps arrange the Shattered Starfields trap against Lan Jue and joins Michael, Raphael, and Uriel in trying to recover Mika. Michael assigns him the three women while taking Zeus, but Lan Jue’s Ascension tears through Gabriel’s shield and mangles two manifested wings. Raphael keeps him alive, and Gabriel accurately recognizes both the strength and short duration of Zeus’s extreme form. The team still fails, making Gabriel a participant in an institutional attack rather than the reluctant observer his initial claim of not wanting enmity might suggest. (Chapters 81–97)

The investigator becomes evidence

Gabriel later serves as a senior investigator and intelligence officer, examining evidence around attacks on the Citadel and representing its upper command. In the Starfields he oversees pirate and genetic-experiment assets whose secrecy conflicts with the Citadel’s public righteousness. Star Division seizes the fortress, and Gabriel—knowing he cannot defeat the now much stronger Lan Jue—is captured and forced to witness the network’s collapse. He survives to report the alien presence and losses. The Pontiff nearly kills him for the disaster, but Metatron intervenes; later reports still treat him as alive, with no subsequent fate stated. Appearance and personality

Gabriel is a handsome, regal man with long golden hair, sapphire-blue eyes, and spotless white robes. He presents elegance rather than Michael’s armored severity. Angelism adds six white wings and holy radiance; injuries to those wings produce golden blood in the Shattered Starfields battle. (Chapters 81–83)

He is controlled, economical, perceptive, and cautious about superior force. Gabriel helps design traps, studies fingerprints and equipment, reads the implications of cloaking technology, and recognizes when Lan Jue has outgrown him. His silence under capture is pragmatic, but his fear also exposes the gap between the Citadel’s public confidence and its compromised operations. (Chapters 81–97, 371–385, and 563–583)

Angelism and holy defense

At Ninth Level eighth rank, Gabriel can manifest a six-winged seraph, fly, project holy light, and create shields or void-like defenses that swallow lesser energy attacks. Zeus’s concentrated Ascension breaks those protections and wounds him immediately, establishing that high Archangel rank remains below Michael’s peak and far below later Paragons. Raphael’s healing is required after the defeat. (Chapters 82–83)

Investigation and covert operations

Gabriel analyzes physical evidence, identifies the strategic cost of advanced cloaking, coordinates Citadel assets, and communicates intelligence to senior leaders. His work gives him broad operational awareness but not perfect prediction: Star Division turns the pirate fortress against its owners, and he fails to identify the attackers until Lan Jue is already in control. Relationships

• Michael: A stronger fellow Archangel and combat leader. Gabriel supports Michael’s trap, receives his battlefield assignment, and survives the defeat that leaves Michael in prolonged recovery.
• Lan Jue: An old enemy Gabriel helps ambush and later encounters after Zeus has become overwhelmingly stronger. Their second meeting reverses the original trap and exposes the Citadel’s hidden assets.
• Mika: The intended captive in the Starfields operation. Gabriel’s organization treats her inheritance as a strategic object despite her decision to reject both Citadels.
• Metatron: Gabriel’s senior commander and eventual protector. Metatron prevents the furious Pontiff from killing him after the pirate-fortress disaster.
• Pontiff: The leader Gabriel serves. The Pontiff’s near-execution of his own operative reveals how severely the Citadel judges failure once its covert investment is lost.
