Astral Phantom
Astral Phantom is an independent Paragon, founder of the Blood Phantoms, and one of humanity's most feared assassins. Long believed to be a man, she conceals her identity and appearance until Lan Qing defeats her and burns away the disguise.
Biography
Assassin for hire
The Astral Phantom first enters the record as the assassin pursuing Lan Qing and is later ranked among the world's ten recognized Paragons. Unaffiliated and motivated by profit, she combines speed, poison, disguise, and a network of Blood Phantom killers. She nearly murders Lan Jue and leaves Zhou Qianlin trapped in a poisonous dream when Qianlin takes the blade meant for him. Her ability to appear, strike, and disappear keeps Skyfire Avenue from retaliating immediately. (Chapters 95, 256, 523–524, 531, 551)
Defeat and soul mark
Greed for vital crystals draws the Astral Phantom into the Clairvoyant's museum, where she takes Jun'er hostage without realizing that the child has foreseen the danger. Lan Qing confronts and defeats her inside the Ocean of Stars Domain. His light strips away the assassin's false male form, revealing a sixty-year-old woman kept physically young by rare resources. Faced with purification of body and soul, she rejects limited bargains but ultimately swears service and voluntarily exposes her soul essence so Lan Qing can mark it. The mark makes defiance agonizing, allows him to know her actions and intentions, and gives him power over her life; their later agreement promises freedom after the alien threat is defeated. (Chapters 642–648, 656, 704)
She subsequently drives and performs arrangements for Lan Qing during the Human Survival Conference and is counted among the East's Paragons. The narrative never shows her completing the promised wartime atonement or receiving freedom. A late authorial note explicitly questions her absence from the final gathering of humanity's Paragons, leaving her fate unresolved rather than confirming either survival or death. (Chapters 704–705, 733, 869)
Appearance and personality
The Astral Phantom habitually uses false faces and presents as an emaciated male assassin. Beneath the disguise she is a beautiful woman with long purple hair, royal-purple eyes, and a slender figure that appears to be in its twenties. Poverty, the deaths of her parents, and revenge shape her obsession with wealth and security, but she turns that pain into decades of paid murder. She is cunning, greedy, vain, and intensely self-preserving; her confession shows genuine exhaustion and remorseful awareness, though she also tries to manipulate Lan Qing before accepting atonement through service. (Chapters 642, 645–647, 656)
Disciplines and abilities
Perception, speed, and poison
Although publicly associated with speed and poison, the Astral Phantom's Path is perception. Exceptional situational awareness lets her tune attacks to disrupt opposing protogenia, while her Domain permits instantaneous movement between points within its reach. Her poison can leave a victim alive but trapped in an unresponsive dream, and her disguises defeat ordinary identification. She is a first-degree Paragon and never reaches the Reflection of Heaven and Earth. (Chapters 523–524, 531, 643–645, 695, 799)
Assassin techniques
She creates shadow copies, strikes with the Soulblight daggers, and concentrates speed, poison, Domain, and perception into Cosmic Smite. That attack nearly pierces Lan Qing's second-degree defense, but consumes one fifth of her total energy and leaves her unable to repeat it. Lan Qing's Buddha's Revelation also exposes every hiding place and suppresses her movement Domain, demonstrating that superior realm and a direct counter can neutralize her defining advantages. (Chapters 643–647)
Relationships
- Lan Qing: Lan Qing repeatedly escapes her assassination attempts, then defeats her, marks her soul, and directs her compulsory service. He refuses to excuse her murders and frames the alien war as her chance for atonement. (Chapters 95, 642–648, 656, 704–705)
- Lan Jue: The Astral Phantom nearly kills Lan Jue and becomes one of his most hated enemies. He nevertheless accepts Jue Di's proposal to spare her under Lan Qing's control. (Chapters 523–524, 642, 646)
- Zhou Qianlin: Qianlin takes the Phantom's poisoned blade in Lan Jue's place and remains trapped in a dream until her later breakthrough and awakening. (Chapters 523–524, 695, 799, 852)
- Juner: The Phantom uses Jun'er as a hostage during the vital-crystal auction, but Jun'er's inherited Domain and foresight make the attempt part of Skyfire Avenue's trap. (Chapter 642)
