Tessai

Tessai was Gunlaug's lieutenant and the ruthless commander of the Bright Castle's largest armed faction. His cold-based Aspect, physical power, and disciplined Guards made him a leading claimant after Gunlaug died. He captured the castle's Artisans and briefly occupied the throne before Seishan betrayed and mortally wounded him. (Chapters 141, 289–291, 301, 306–307)

Biography

Commander of the Castle Guard

Tessai led roughly one hundred and fifty Guards charged with defending the Bright Castle and enforcing Gunlaug's laws. He kept this comparatively inexperienced force under rigorous training and an iron grip, making it the largest organized body in the Dark City. Nearly thirty years old, he was described as perhaps the oldest Sleeper on the Forgotten Shore and one of Gunlaug's most trusted lieutenants. (Chapter 141)

His authority reached beyond open defense. Harper reported information about Nephis's party through Tessai's Guards, and Tessai later arrived at the outer settlement with an accusation that Effie had murdered his men. The testimony was manufactured, but it provided a legal pretext to bring Nephis and her followers into Gunlaug's hall, where the Bright Lord intended to destroy them publicly. (Chapters 161–162, 289–293)

Tessai remained calm during that provocation because its purpose was political rather than judicial. He performed outrage, restrained Effie, and led the entire faction toward the castle while anticipating Gunlaug's victory. When Nephis killed Gunlaug instead, Tessai did not mourn or negotiate: he immediately ordered the Host to kill the challengers and helped turn the throne room into a massacre. (Chapters 289–298)

The war for the white throne

After the initial battle ended without a victor, Tessai allied the Guards with Seishan's Handmaidens and controlled the castle's strongest territory and largest armed faction. His ice and cold countered Nephis's flame well enough that their direct clash ended in a draw. That balance made him one of three contenders whose personal power prevented the civil war from ending quickly. (Chapters 301–306)

Tessai broke the stalemate by assaulting Gemma and Kido's stronghold. His Guards defeated the Hunters, captured nearly every Artisan, and Tessai killed Kido with his own hands. He then placed frightened or bound Artisans in front of his army as a probable human shield and sat on the white throne, choosing intimidation and forced resources over compromise. (Chapter 306)

The alliance that made his victory possible was also the trap that ended it. As Tessai prepared for a final battle with Nephis, Seishan struck the back of his head with the Sunlight Shard while the Handmaidens slaughtered the unsuspecting Guards. His hardened body kept him moving briefly despite a shattered skull, but Nephis fulfilled her promise by piercing his heart. His death ended the war for the castle. (Chapter 307)

Appearance and personality

Tessai was a morose giant of a man whose size and oppressive presence made other Sleepers appear small. He carried a heavy mace, bared prominent canines when he grinned, and at the height of his power sat on Gunlaug's throne with the weapon still wet from slaughter. His skin turned faintly blue when his icy defense was active. (Chapters 141, 290, 306–307)

He was disciplined, ruthless, and comfortable using law as theater. Tessai could remain cold and controlled while executing a plan, but his language and behavior in the civil war exposed pride, cruelty, and an appetite for violence. He killed Kido personally, anticipated mass slaughter with pleasure, and underestimated Seishan because he treated the alliance as another instrument under his command. Abilities and Aspect

Cold and ice

Tessai's Aspect Ability was tied to cold and ice. It could harden his skin until it was like stone and surround him with an invisible icy barrier, producing blue coloration, falling temperature, and snowflakes in the throne room. The same power debilitated nearby enemies by making their movements slow and stiff. (Chapters 301, 307)

His cold resisted Nephis's flames well enough to counter a major part of her combat advantage and force a draw in their first direct clash. The defense was formidable but not invulnerable: a surprise blow from the Sunlight Shard shattered his skull, and Nephis's sword then pierced his heart. The corpus does not supply the Aspect's name, precise range, essence cost, or Flaw. (Chapters 306–307)

Martial and command ability

Tessai was a ferocious close combatant who had helped kill a Fallen creature and could contest the strongest Dreamers of the Forgotten Shore. He wielded a massive mace, crushed an uninvolved Sleeper during the throne-room massacre, and combined physical might with a debuff that made retaliation harder. His command strength lay in drilling a large force and deploying it decisively, not in subtle personal loyalty. (Chapters 141, 189, 298, 301, 306–307)

Relationships

Gunlaug and the Host

Gunlaug trusted Tessai with the castle's walls, laws, and largest military body. Tessai served that order effectively while it existed, but reacted to the Bright Lord's death by issuing an indiscriminate killing command and then pursuing the vacant throne. His conduct shows institutional loyalty to power and the Guard more clearly than Harus's personal devotion to Gunlaug. (Chapters 141, 289–301)

Seishan and Nephis

Tessai treated Seishan as an ally whose Handmaidens completed his numerical advantage, unaware that she had already aligned herself with Nephis. Nephis was his open rival and the opponent whose fire his ice could resist, while Seishan was the concealed threat who bypassed that contest entirely. Their coordinated betrayal destroyed his army before he could give the order to attack. (Chapters 301, 306–308)

Items

Tessai wielded an unnamed heavy mace during the civil war. No special enchantment, origin, or later custodian is established for it. The Sunlight Shard that broke his skull belonged to Seishan, not Tessai, and should not be included in his inventory. (Chapters 298, 306–307)
