Jubei

Jubei is an experienced hunter from the Bright Castle's outer settlement who publicly accuses a Pathfinder of feeding a young recruit to Nightmare Creatures. Gunlaug turns the accusation into a staged Right of Challenge, and Harus kills Jubei as a warning against resistance. His courage and death later help fuel the rebellion against the Castle's rulers. Biography

Accusation and public execution

Jubei is dragged before Gunlaug after speaking openly against one of the Bright Castle's Pathfinders. He refuses to bow and accuses Andel of luring an innocent youth into a hunting party with promises of riches and Castle residence, only to use him as bait for monsters. Because betraying another human to Nightmare Creatures violates even the Dark City's brutal norms, his testimony turns the assembled Sleepers against the Pathfinder. (Chapter 144)

Gunlaug presents himself as a just lord and invokes the Right of Challenge, but structures the proceeding to preserve his lieutenant Gemma and eliminate the accuser. When Andel chooses Harus as champion, Jubei accepts without fear and calls the hunchback a butcher. He manifests red scale armor, a winged helmet, kite shield, and scimitar, then attacks with the confidence of a veteran hunter. (Chapters 144–145)

The contest is an execution rather than a fair trial. Harus uses his unnatural strength and perception to destroy Jubei with his bare hands, leaving a disfigured corpse before the Castle's population. The Handmaidens remove the body and clean the hall so breakfast can resume. Jubei's accusation does not receive formal justice, but Nephis later uses a separate theft charge to challenge and kill Andel without allowing a lieutenant to substitute. (Chapters 145–154)

Jubei's death remains politically potent after the man himself is gone. Sunny cites it when explaining Gunlaug's total control, and outer-settlement hunters later refuse to let Effie become another example like Jubei. They call for vengeance when Tessai's Guards come for her, showing that the spectacle meant to suppress resistance instead gives the rebels a martyr whose grievance survives the Castle's ritualized erasure. Appearance and personality

Jubei is a strong, seasoned adult hunter whose straight back, raised head, and furious eyes convey pride before any detailed facial portrait does. He wears scavenged clothing until summoning a complete red-scaled battle set. Even under Gunlaug's charisma and the threat of his lieutenants, he neither lowers his gaze nor softens his accusation. He is defiant, blunt, and willing to stake his life on defending a murdered youth. Jubei has watched the Host commit crimes for years and finally decides that toleration has reached its limit. His contempt can look reckless—he welcomes Harus as the worse opponent—but it is grounded in experience rather than ignorance. Sunny recognizes real willpower and briefly hopes that it can overcome a system designed to make resistance fatal. (Chapters 144–146)

Abilities and Aspect

Jubei is one of the outer settlement's most experienced hunters, a capable warrior who has repeatedly survived the Dark City. He handles scimitar and shield together, lunging behind cover with a coordinated cut. The corpus does not name his Aspect, Aspect rank, Ability, Flaw, or soul-core saturation, and his brief duel does not isolate any clearly supernatural effect beyond the Memories he summons. His principal demonstrated strengths are martial practice, physical conditioning, and extraordinary resolve under pressure. Jubei has watched Gunlaug's regime abuse the outer settlement and addresses the Bright Lord without deference. Gunlaug disguises retaliation as legal process, praising righteousness while ensuring that neither Andel nor indispensable Gemma bears the risk. Jubei dies, but the contradiction between the ruler's benevolent language and his arranged execution becomes important evidence of how the Castle maintains obedience. (Chapters 144–148)

Harus, Gemma, and Nephis

Harus is the champion who kills Jubei, apparently settling an existing grievance that the corpus does not explain. Gemma is prepared to answer for his subordinate's official acts but is spared by Gunlaug and reacts darkly to the substitution. Nephis later returns to the same hall, uses Jubei's case to isolate Andel through a private theft charge, and accomplishes the punishment the first challenge was designed to prevent. Jubei summons flexible red scale armor with a winged helmet, a kite shield, and a razor-sharp curved scimitar. All three are Memories and form a coherent defensive fighting set, but their names, Ranks, tiers, and enchantments are not stated.
