Harus

Harus was Gunlaug's executioner and the most feared of the Bright Castle's five lieutenants. His Aspect deprived victims of sight, allowing his exceptional strength and practiced brutality to turn punishment into apparently effortless disappearance. He remained loyal after Gunlaug's death and was killed by Sunny beneath the throne room. (Chapters 143–146, 191–192, 298–301)

Biography

The Bright Lord's hidden blade

Harus held no ordinary administrative office. When Gunlaug wanted terror displayed, Harus left mutilated bodies; when secrecy mattered, people vanished without witnesses. His pale, deformed appearance and emotionless bearing became part of the threat, but the deeper source of his reputation was obedience: he accepted any command, no matter how vile, and made the Bright Lord's displeasure feel inescapable. Gunlaug demonstrated that arrangement during Jubei's challenge. Harus entered without armor or a conventional weapon, caught a scimitar in his bare hand, tore off the hunter's arm, broke his neck, and shattered his chest in seconds. His indifference shifted into subtle pleasure only after the killing, revealing that the blank executioner's manner concealed genuine enjoyment rather than reluctance. (Chapters 145–146)

When Nephis became a threat, Gunlaug sent Harus alone to follow her cohort through the Dark City. The choice showed how completely the castle trusted his lethality: no hunting party or ambush force accompanied him. The cohort avoided a direct fight because his Ability remained unknown, and the pursuit reinforced the fear surrounding an enemy who could erase both resistance and witnesses. (Chapters 191–200)

Loyalty after Gunlaug's death

Harus watched Gunlaug die from beside the throne and initially seemed disoriented. He then fixed on the weakened Nephis with murderous hatred, treating his master's last interests as binding even after death. Sunny intercepted him and carried their fight into a hidden corridor, separating the executioner from the massacre and preventing him from reaching Nephis. (Chapters 297–299)

In the corridor, Harus rejected the idea that loyalty ended with Gunlaug's life and declared that everyone opposing his lord still had to die. He blinded Sunny and nearly killed him through superior reach, strength, and grappling power. Sunny survived because Shadow Sense partly replaced vision and an external shadow could act as eyes, making his Aspect an unusually strong counter to Harus's usual method. (Chapters 299–300)

Sunny let Harus believe that brute force had won, then summoned the Moonlight Shard directly into his hand and drove it through the executioner's temple. Harus died instantly as a Dormant human, yielding only one shadow fragment. His concealed corpse was discovered after the battle, and rumors about the unknown barehanded killer made the castle more frightened rather than less. (Chapters 300–302)

Appearance and personality

Harus was pale and bony-faced, with glassy, emotionless eyes and a severely twisted spine that made him appear deceptively short. When he straightened as far as his deformity allowed, he towered over most Sleepers and displayed a massive, bestial frame. He dressed in unadorned black and carried himself awkwardly whenever he became the center of attention. (Chapters 143, 145, 191, 299)

His habitual expression was bored, cold, and detached, but violence exposed sadism and fascination. He took subtle glee in Jubei's execution, enjoyed watching Sunny struggle while being strangled, and regarded service to Gunlaug as a complete moral command. Harus was not mindlessly obedient: he spoke, mocked, adapted his chain use, and recognized unusual resistance, but never questioned the master whose will gave his violence purpose. Abilities and Aspect

Sight deprivation

Harus could make a chosen opponent completely blind, which observers initially misread as an ability to remain unseen. The effect erased ordinary sight immediately and could apparently be maintained while he attacked, leaving skilled victims unable to use technique or target their own powers properly. The corpus does not provide the Aspect's formal name, range, target limit, activation condition, or essence cost. (Chapters 299–300)

The Ability did not erase every form of perception. Sunny could track the movement of Harus's shadow through Shadow Sense and regained ordinary visual information by sending his shadow away as an external observer; Cassie's preexisting blindness and adapted combat style were later identified as another likely counter. These cases establish a strong but specialized power, not universal invisibility or sensory suppression. (Chapters 300, 302, 507)

Physical combat

Harus possessed tremendous Dormant strength, speed, durability, and killing experience. He stopped a Memory blade barehanded, mutilated Jubei in seconds, fought accurately while moving almost without sound, and overpowered an augmented Sunny at close range. His twisted posture concealed his reach and mass, while his measured technique made grappling especially dangerous. (Chapters 145–146, 299–300)

His advantages were not absolute. Sunny's perception counter reduced the blindness effect, mobility kept the smaller fighter out of Harus's grip for a time, and Harus's confidence in his physical control made him ignore repeated weak strikes. That last habit let Sunny hide an instantaneously summoned weapon inside what appeared to be another harmless punch. (Chapter 300)

Relationships

Gunlaug

Gunlaug was Harus's lord and the organizing center of his identity. Harus served as the personal answer to disobedience, accepted public and secret executions, and continued acting on Gunlaug's will after seeing him dead. This devotion distinguished him from lieutenants who pursued the throne or new alliances, but also left him directionless enough for grief and hatred to dictate his final target. (Chapters 143–146, 297–300)

Sunny

Sunny regarded Harus as a possible version of himself who had willingly surrendered freedom to become another person's weapon. That resemblance made their conflict personal before they ever fought. Harus dismissed him as a weak, talkative opponent, while Sunny used the very cunning and refusal to submit that separated them to survive the blindness and kill him. (Chapters 143, 191–192, 298–301)

Items

Harus used an unnamed heavy chain Memory, wrapping its links around his forearm and fist as armor before extending it to strike or seize a weapon at range. The chain resisted the Midnight Shard and amplified his already formidable close combat, but it did not prevent an attack through his unprotected temple. No later owner or separate named item is established. (Chapters 299–300)
