Harper

Harper is a timid Sleeper who registers guests at the Bright Castle and guides Sunny and Cassie during their first stay. After losing the soul shards required for Castle residence, he spies on Nephis's group in exchange for promised readmission. His attempt to learn Sunny's True Name triggers a fatal confrontation whose consequences reach far beyond Harper's death. (Chapters 134–168 and 360)

Biography

Castle receptionist

Harper welcomes Sunny and Cassie moments before the Bright Castle closes for the night. He records their names and tribute, finds adjacent rooms in the unpopular Tower of Dusk, and explains the fortress's food, restricted areas, curfew, and rules against showing light after dark. His guidance is friendly and useful, although his rehearsed praise for Gunlaug and careful warnings about offending the Host reveal how fear shapes ordinary life inside the walls. (Chapters 134–137)

He had reached the Castle only months earlier and survives there by performing clerical work rather than hunting. The safety is conditional on continued tribute: when Sunny and Cassie cannot pay for another week, Harper records their departure, and when Nephis brings them back the same day he reacts with genuine surprise. His position gives him access to ledgers and newcomers, but no security independent of the soul shards demanded by the regime. (Chapters 134, 146, and 152)

Expulsion and recruitment as a spy

Harper is soon unable to pay and is expelled into the outer settlement. Gaunter, dirtier, and hungry, he comes to Nephis's lodge asking for food. Sunny welcomes him, offers a meal without payment, and suggests taking chores if accepting charity feels uncomfortable. Harper quickly helps in the kitchen, learns names, and asks how the group works, outwardly behaving like another grateful refugee seeking a place. (Chapter 158)

Sunny's shadow follows Harper to a hidden meeting with one of Tessai's senior Guards. The Castle promises readmission without tribute if he gathers detailed information about Nephis and her core companions—their Aspects, Abilities, Flaws, habits, and vulnerabilities. Harper is frightened by the task and knows such secrets are hard to obtain, but the desperation to regain shelter overcomes his hesitation. His spying is coerced by precarity without being involuntary. (Chapters 158–161)

Fatal question

Sunny confronts Harper privately while using alcohol and conversation to determine what he has learned. Harper asks whether Sunny has a True Name. Because Sunny's Flaw forces him to answer direct questions truthfully, the apparently simple inquiry threatens to expose the key that can enslave him through Shadow Bond. Cornered by the pain of resisting an answer, Sunny stabs Harper through the heart before the words are forced out, then whispers “Lost from Light” while holding him down until he dies. (Chapters 161–162)

Caster discovers the scene, helps hide the corpse, arranges an hour without Castle observers, and turns the assistance into leverage over Sunny. Sunny later carries Harper deep into the ruins and leaves the body in a collapsed house. The receptionist is immediately replaced at the same desk, and neither the Castle nor the outer settlement publicly resolves his disappearance. His name survives chiefly through the guilt, secrets, and political consequences of the murder. (Chapters 162–171)

Cassie had already foreseen the killing and heard Sunny speak his True Name in the vision. She later uses that knowledge to place control of Shadow Bond with Nephis, meaning the secret Sunny killed Harper to contain escapes precisely through the murder itself. Sunny recognizes the bitter reversal after returning from the Forgotten Shore: Harper, though dead and unburied, has unintentionally shaped the fate of the cohort and exacted a form of posthumous revenge. (Chapters 226 and 360)

Appearance and personality

Harper is a gaunt, weak-looking young man with a thin face and nervous eyes. Inside the Castle his clothes are clean, tidy, and unworn compared with the rags outside; expulsion rapidly makes him thinner, dirtier, and more visibly desperate. He writes neatly, speaks quickly, and often smiles sheepishly or stutters when afraid. (Chapters 134–158)

He is talkative, accommodating, anxious, and eager to seem useful. His kindness to new guests appears genuine, but dependence makes him compliant with stronger people. Harper praises Gunlaug within earshot of Guards, warns newcomers to swallow abuses, and accepts Tessai's spying bargain because safety has become more important than loyalty to people who feed him. The story presents him as weak and compromised rather than cruel or ideologically devoted to the Host. (Chapters 134–161)

Abilities and Aspect

Harper is a Sleeper, called a Dreamer by the Spell at his death, but no Aspect, Ability, Flaw, soul-core state, combat art, or supernatural perception is shown. He cannot afford continued tribute and is physically too weak to resist Sunny once stabbed. His useful competencies are mundane literacy, recordkeeping, knowledge of Castle rules, hospitality, and the social ease to ask questions without immediately appearing threatening. (Chapters 134–162)

His espionage relies on access and apparent harmlessness rather than stealth powers. He befriends lodge residents, learns names, performs chores, and reports to a Guard in a secluded alley. Sunny detects him through shadow surveillance, establishing that Harper has no demonstrated counter to supernatural observation. The fatal True Name question succeeds by accident and Sunny's Flaw, not through knowledge of Shadow Bond's mechanics. (Chapters 158–162)

Relationships

Sunny

Harper first helps Sunny navigate the Castle, and Sunny later feeds him when the same system casts him out. Their relationship turns lethal when Sunny discovers the spying and Harper unknowingly asks the question Sunny fears most. Sunny kills because containment is easy, then cannot accept his own justifications. The act damages his trust, allows Caster to pressure him, and becomes the route through which Cassie learns the secret he wanted to protect. (Chapters 134–226 and 360)

Cassie, Nephis, and Caster

Harper houses Cassie with Sunny and later investigates Nephis's cohort for Tessai. He does not know that Cassie has foreseen his death or that his final question will give her the information needed to alter Sunny and Nephis's futures. Caster suspects his spying, arrives after the murder, and conceals the body while making Sunny understand that the secret can be used against him. (Chapters 134–164 and 360)

Gunlaug and Tessai

Gunlaug's order gives Harper temporary safety only while tribute continues; his praise may be sincere gratitude, defensive performance, or both. After expulsion, Tessai's Guard exploits that dependency by promising a place inside in return for intelligence. Harper's fate illustrates how the Castle converts shelter into political control, using people who lack combat power as disposable instruments against emerging rivals. (Chapters 134–161)

Items

Harper possesses no named Memory, weapon, armor, or Echo. His work uses a quill, ink, parchment, ledgers, and iron room keys belonging to the Bright Castle. Sunny kills him with a crude iron knife found in the outer-settlement hut; the knife is not Harper's personal item, and the corpus gives it no magical properties or later significance. (Chapters 134–162)
