Cormac

Cormac was a Saint of Valor who conducted expeditions into the Hollow Mountains and returned from them through the Night Temple. After apparently destroying Mordret's last vessel in the Temple, he attempted to silence Sunny and Cassie, provoking a battle in which Tyris killed him. (Chapters 595–596, 804, 1097)

Biography

Valor's expedition and the Night Temple

Cormac spent repeated expeditions exploring the Hollow Mountains on Valor's behalf, entering the white mist for periods that never exceeded a month or two. The corpus never identifies his precise objective; Sunny later considered searches for a crossing or the Underworld but explicitly treated both as speculation. What is established is that Cormac returned from one such expedition early, his armor nearly destroyed by the Death Zone. (Chapters 595, 1753–1755)

He entered the Night Temple after Mordret's escape had annihilated its garrison. Cormac moved through the Citadel with speed that left a gust of wind and apparently destroyed the prince's final vessel. He then approached the only surviving witnesses with blood still on his hands. Sunny inferred that Cormac regarded them as possible vessels or liabilities, and Cormac's own refusal to let them be questioned elsewhere confirmed that survival was not the outcome he intended. Tyris placed herself between Cormac and the two Awakened. She offered a joint interrogation at the Sanctuary, but Cormac rejected oversight and invoked the will of Valor, insisting that she stand down. Tyris answered that she had once allowed his “odious scheme” and regretted it, then asserted responsibility for people of her Citadel. Cormac chose force rather than relinquish control of the witnesses. (Chapter 596)

Duel with Sky Tide

Cormac transformed into a black wyvern and fought Tyris above the Northern Island. Their collision destroyed the Night Temple, broke the island apart, and endangered the very witnesses over whom they had clashed. The immediate chapter follows Sunny and Cassie's escape rather than the duel's conclusion, but later accounts state that Tyris tore off Cormac's wyvern head and killed him. (Chapters 596, 1097)

Cormac's absence was publicly felt because humanity possessed so few Transcendents, although the circumstances of his death were not widely explained. His attempt to enforce secrecy therefore achieved the opposite of institutional control: Mordret's vessel was destroyed, but the witnesses escaped, Tyris survived, and Valor lost a Saint whose expeditions had reached terrain few humans could endure. Appearance and personality

Cormac appeared to be in his thirties, with a stern, weathered, cold face and dark, ruthless eyes. On returning from the Hollow Mountains, he wore battered black armor that was barely holding together and carried no visible weapon. His presence and deep shadow immediately marked him as Transcendent even before his power was displayed. (Chapters 595–596)

He was forceful, secretive, contemptuous, and accustomed to treating Valor's authority as decisive. Cormac did not explain his task to Tyris, accept a shared investigation, or moderate his threat when challenged on another Saint's land. His willingness to destroy possible witnesses and fight through a populated territory portrays ruthless operational loyalty, while the corpus provides no private perspective that would clarify his personal motives. Abilities and Aspect

Wyvern transformation

Cormac's Transcendent form was an enormous flying wyvern with black scales, powerful muscles, twisting horns, countless fangs, and red fire burning within an adamantine body. The form could battle Tyris's thunderbird in the sky and survive impacts violent enough to split a floating island. Its demonstrated assets were flight, speed, strength, durability, teeth, and internal flame; no separate breath attack is explicitly shown. (Chapter 596)

The transformation was not invulnerable. Tyris overcame Cormac in aerial combat and tore off the wyvern's head, killing him. The supplied corpus does not name his Aspect, Flaw, Domain, Dormant through Ascended Abilities, or the costs of his fire, so the mechanics beyond the observed Transcendent body remain unknown. Speed and endurance

In human form, Cormac crossed the Night Temple quickly enough to leave a gust of wind and destroyed Mordret's final vessel before pursuing Sunny and Cassie. Valor and Mordret

Cormac served Great Clan Valor and treated his undisclosed assignment as carrying the King's authority. At the Night Temple he opposed Mordret, apparently destroyed the prince's last active vessel, and then tried to control every surviving source of information. The corpus does not show a personal relationship between them; their conflict is grounded in Cormac's institutional task and Mordret's status as Valor's imprisoned enemy. (Chapters 595–596)

Tyris, Sunny, and Cassie

Tyris knew enough about Cormac's earlier scheme to regret having tolerated it, but their direct conflict began when she protected Sunny and Cassie. Cormac treated her jurisdiction and compromise as obstacles, while she treated his threat as a violation of her duty.
