Obel

Obel was a pre-Spell scientist whose work on Nightmare Gates produced the Obel Scale and a wider theory connecting humanity's supernatural growth to increasingly powerful manifestations. Sunny escorts him from LO49 to Falcon Scott, where the elderly professor gives up his evacuation place and dies with the city. (Chapters 509, 879–880, 1054–1060)

Biography

The scientist behind the Obel Scale

Obel and his colleagues created the scale bearing his name during the early years of the Nightmare Spell. It tracks the pulses associated with Gate manifestation and assigns probabilities to approaching events, providing an emergency forecasting tool without explaining their ultimate cause. Obel later calls it primitive only in comparison with the deeper causal theory he still hoped to build. (Chapters 509 and 879)

At LO49 his team studied correlations among the Spell, Nightmare Gates, and Awakened. Obel questioned whether supernatural disasters merely produced stronger humans or whether humanity's accumulated power also drew stronger disasters. His observations linked the number and rank of Awakened to the pace and severity of Gates, a theory later used by the Sovereigns when justifying their policy of restricting advancement. The later political use does not make Obel responsible for their killings or conclusions. (Chapters 879–880 and 2188)

Evacuation from LO49

Sunny meets Obel as the elderly professor and Beth prepare to leave LO49. Obel shares knowledge freely, treats the young Master as a scholar as well as a guard, and recognizes Julius as a former student. While disappearances and attacks threaten the station, Obel insists that Sunny not value one famous scientist above the many civilians placed in his care. The convoy eventually carries him, Beth, and their research north through repeated disasters. (Chapters 878–880, 889–900, and 910–911)

Obel's presence becomes personally important to Sunny. Their conversations range from Gate causality to the irrational courage by which communities survive, and the professor offers food, advice, and a rare respite from command. Sunny protects him through the convoy not only for scientific value but because Obel and Beth come to personify the mundane people the Evacuation Army exists to save. (Chapters 910–911, 964, and 1049)

Choosing Falcon Scott

When too few evacuation places remain, Sunny orders Beth and Obel through the barrier. Obel pushes Beth ahead, then steps back so Kim and Luster can take the remaining places without displacing other civilians. He returns to the city voluntarily, explaining that he had already asked Sunny never to save him at someone else's expense. Rather than wait passively, he joins other old engineers at the communication array to attempt one last repair. (Chapters 1054–1056)

The Winter Beast annihilates Falcon Scott and kills Obel with the people who remain. Sunny later remembers his cooking, teachings, and death, while scholars and rulers continue invoking his research long after. These later references are legacy rather than survival: Chapter 1060 explicitly states that the professor is dead. (Chapters 1060, 1179, 1650, 2188, and 2564)

Appearance and personality

Obel is extremely old, with paper-thin skin, visible blue veins, neatly combed white hair, and eyes still sharp with intelligence. Born before the Nightmare Spell, he lived through the Dark Times and the transformation of human civilization. His physical fragility contrasts with an alert, humorous presence and an enduring appetite for difficult problems. (Chapter 878)

He is curious, modest, patient, and quietly stubborn. Obel calls his famous scale a collective and limited early tool, enjoys teaching younger researchers, and meets catastrophe with good humor rather than self-importance. His final refusal to replace another evacuee reflects the same ethics as his science: an individual's fame does not make other lives disposable. (Chapters 878–880 and 1054–1056)

Abilities and Aspect

Scientific and engineering work

Obel is mundane and has no Aspect, essence, Attribute, or combat Ability. His achievements derive from observation, mathematics, engineering, and collaboration. The Obel Scale can forecast manifestation events by measuring their associated pulse, but it neither prevents a Gate nor explains why it appears. His later causal research remains a compelling correlation rather than a complete mechanism for the Spell. (Chapters 879–880)

His practical limitations are severe in the field: age and mundane flesh leave him dependent on soldiers for protection and transport. Even so, he can contribute through diagnosis and engineering. His last planned act is to join a group attempting to restore Falcon Scott's communication array, an undertaking that may help others but cannot protect him from the Winter Beast's domain-wide cold. Relationships

Beth

Beth is Obel's assistant and protective companion. He gently corrects her attitude, trusts her scientific work, and repeatedly accepts her help without treating her as expendable. At the evacuation barrier he ensures she survives even though she wants him beside her, making their final separation an intentional transfer of the future to his younger colleague. (Chapters 878, 887–888, and 1052–1054)

Sunny and Julius

Obel treats Sunny as both protector and fellow academic, challenging his need to save everyone while appreciating the lives his stubbornness preserves. Their farewell asks Sunny to survive rather than convert responsibility into self-destruction. Julius, once Obel's student, carries the professor's intellectual legacy and later repeats his maxim that humanity needs some stupidity to survive. (Chapters 878–880, 910–911, 1056, and 2564)
