Vlossana
Vlossana is Count Plomer’s daughter, whose open-hearted excitement about travel is shattered when the Animal Kingdom destroys her home. Her attempt to turn grief into revenge leads to a devil’s bargain and a confrontation with Edgar that frees her from its hold. (Chapters 109–115, 168, 297, 313, 355)
Biography
A joyful passenger aboard the Trampling Ram
Vlossana meets Jack in Pearl Bay, where his blood-covered arrival draws her attention. She welcomes him cheerfully, asks what brought him to the city, and wishes him well when they part. The chance meeting resumes aboard the Trampling Ram: Vlossana and her father, Count Plomer, are passengers, while Jack has joined the crew under a false name. Vlossana recognizes him and notices the discrepancy, but she remains friendly and eager to share her excitement about traveling through space. (Chapters 109, 111–112)
Her enthusiasm is tempered by attentiveness. Vlossana asks Jack about his past and his Dao, and she recognizes that his cheerful manner can conceal distress. When the ship’s crew is hurt in the fight with a space monster, she helps tend the injured and gently keeps Vashter from talking while he recovers. When the Animal Kingdom’s Hounds corner the ship and Captain Dordok stays behind to delay them, Vlossana takes the helm as Bomn orders the crew to flee. She does not control the danger around them, but she helps the survivors escape. (Chapters 115, 119–121, 123)
The destruction of her home
When the Trampling Ram reaches the Fair Way Continent, Vlossana rushes home and finds her manor burned, its servants and horses dead, and the remains of her relatives displayed on stakes. The Animal Kingdom has targeted her world because Jack boarded the ship; the faction treats the association as enough to make an example of her family and people. Vlossana’s hope of leading them toward happier lives collapses into grief and anger. She names the Animal Kingdom and Jack as her enemies and leaves the ruins alone. (Chapter 168)
Her Dao Seed of Joy cannot console her in a place where she sees no remaining joy. In anguish, Vlossana cracks that Dao Seed and forsakes her former path. Dark energy fills the break, and she develops and fuses a Dao Root of Sorrow with the Seed of Joy, forming a new, more powerful but unstable whole. Her cheerfulness later masks a darkness that remains inside her, while the dream she held for her people is replaced by a desire for revenge. (Chapters 168, 250)
A bargain made from grief
Vlossana hides in a sealed cave, where Etsin, an echidna devil, finds her consumed by grief and revenge. Etsin offers power in exchange for her soul, promising to help her reach D-Grade. He grants half the promised power immediately, raising her to peak E-Grade, and makes the rest conditional on killing a man. Vlossana accepts, asking whether the target is innocent only to be told that it does not matter. The target is Edgar, whom she later confronts during the war. The second portion of the promised power is conditional; she never receives it. (Chapter 297)
At the battle, Vlossana approaches Edgar as an assassin and uses her altered Dao to overwhelm him with the emotional force of her memories. She makes him experience the destruction of her home and the grief that followed, and she presses invisible tendrils of power toward his senses and mind. Edgar cannot bring himself to answer her pain with violence. He reveals his original Dao of Magic beneath the devil’s shell, entering the emotional world she has exposed rather than trying to destroy her. (Chapters 308–313)
Edgar’s compassion reaches the childlike part of Vlossana still hidden beneath the darkness. Her grief does not disappear, but the Dao of Joy and Dao Root of Sorrow return to balance, with sorrow no longer governing her. Her belief that she cannot kill Edgar breaks the devil’s contract; the granted power recedes, its spiritual shackles lift, and her ability to advance is damaged permanently. In the same moment, her hand has already destroyed Edgar’s heart, though the Sage restores him. Vlossana is left alive and crying, no longer attacking. (Chapter 313)
After the battlefield
When Jack returns to the group, Vlossana is present but unable to fight. Jack is surprised to see her, and Edgar explains what happened. Vlossana’s bargain has ended, but that does not erase the loss that led her to accept it; her sorrow remains part of her Dao rather than disappearing with the devil’s power. (Chapters 315, 323)
Vlossana remains unwilling to meet Jack when he returns in Chapter 355. Her earlier bargain has ended, but she still keeps her distance from him, leaving the reason for her choice unresolved. No later direct scene clarifies whether she eventually reconnects with Jack or continues to stay away. Her absence from later reunions does not erase her earlier role or confirm a final separation. (Chapter 355)
Appearance and personality
Vlossana is a Saphira with sapphire-colored hair and purple eyes. As a passenger aboard the Trampling Ram, she wears a sapphire shirt and long purple skirt. After the destruction of her home, grief and a baleful darkness replace her earlier lively expression; during the battle with Edgar, black tears mark her face. (Chapters 115, 168, 297, 313)
Before the tragedy, Vlossana is sociable, curious, and exuberant about travel. She notices that Jack is hiding something without becoming hostile, cares for injured crew members, and acts quickly when Bomn needs her to take the helm. The violence of the Animal Kingdom’s attack overwhelms those hopes, but Edgar’s kindness allows her to feel grief without letting it rule her entire identity. (Chapters 109, 115, 120, 123, 168, 313)
Abilities and cultivation
Vlossana’s cultivation first centers on a Dao Seed of Joy. The Seed sustains her happiness, but after the massacre of her home she cracks it and fuses a Dao Root of Sorrow into it. The resulting power is stronger but carries an internal darkness that poisons her thoughts. Etsin’s bargain temporarily raises her to peak E-Grade and turns her grief into a weapon; when the contract breaks, that granted power recedes, while her balanced Joy-and-Sorrow Dao remains. She is left unable to advance further. (Chapters 115, 168, 297, 313)
Dao of Joy and Dao Root of Sorrow
The Dao Seed of Joy had long supported Vlossana’s cheerful outlook. Its precise combat mechanics are not established before the change. When her home is destroyed, she turns against that Seed, cracking it and fusing the Dao Root of Sorrow into the fracture. The union creates a more powerful Dao, but its dark influence initially dominates her and leaves her joy as a thin outward veil. (Chapters 115, 168)
After Edgar enters the emotional space she reveals, his Dao of Magic and empathy help her reconnect with the Joy within her Dao. The result is not a return to her earlier unaffected happiness: the Dao of Joy and Root of Sorrow coexist in equilibrium, and grief remains a part of her. The darkness no longer controls the Dao, and Vlossana’s bargain with Etsin breaks. (Chapter 313)
Devil-granted power and emotional assault
Etsin grants Vlossana half of the power promised in their contract, immediately raising her to peak E-Grade. The rest was conditional on killing Edgar and would have helped her reach D-Grade. The contract allows Vlossana to channel her pain into invisible tendrils that enter a target’s senses and mind, project her memories and emotional state, and try to corrupt the target’s view of the world. She also turns the emotional intensity of Joy and Sorrow into elemental-like effects: a river of grief douses fire, while burning joy dispels ice. (Chapters 297, 309, 313)
Her attack is potent enough that Edgar cannot force the tendrils away and nearly loses himself in her grief. His empathy instead lets him enter her emotional world and counter its despair with the beauty of his Dao. Vlossana’s power can be resisted through an opposing Dao and emotional connection; her bargain also imposes a severe cost, claiming her soul in exchange for power. When she can no longer see Edgar as a target she must kill, the pact breaks, the devil-granted power vanishes, and she cannot advance further. The exact range, duration, and other costs of her tendrils are unknown. (Chapters 297, 313)
