Brother Tao
Brother Tao is a disciplined staff fighter who meets Jack as a tournament opponent and later becomes a dependable ally in conflicts far beyond the arena.
Biography
Tournament Rival and Ally
Brother Tao enters Earth’s tournament as a respected martial artist who has never been defeated. He meets Jack in the arena with a black metal staff and says he has long wanted to test himself against him. Their duel introduces him as an honorable rival: after their fight he remains part of the tournament circle, and when Jack struggles to finance the Rainbow Dao Pill that might save Rufus, Tao offers 500,000 credits from his remaining funds. He frames the loan as good karma and trusts Jack to honor it. (Chapters 64, 68, 72–74)
The staff becomes both Tao’s weapon and a visible expression of his path. At the auction he purchases a pitch-black wooden staff weighing a thousand pounds, then begins practicing with it; the item’s weight strains him at first, but he expects strength training to make it usable. His tournament ends in a loss to Dorman Whistles. Tao nevertheless accepts the result with composure, greeting Dorman respectfully and calling it his final day in the tournament. He leaves it having defended his monastery’s honor and made a friend of Jack rather than treating defeat as humiliation. (Chapters 73, 77)
Tao later stands with the alliance as it confronts the scions and the Ice Peak faction. During the fighting, he loses his left arm while killing an attacker who was about to strike Jack; the injury does not end his participation. He returns in the Cathedral-era battle against Fesh Wui, helping Gan Salin’s side despite the disparity in power. His direct combat role is limited by stronger opponents, but he remains present as an ally. A later account says that he founded many monasteries teaching martial mastery and Buddhism, and that his faith endured after he met Shol. (Chapters 102–105, 307, 309, 311, 314, 324)
Appearance and personality
Tao is a bald Tibetan monk in orange robes, with clear eyes and a black metal staff when first introduced. He is respectful toward opponents, generous with his resources, and committed to his monastery’s honor. (Chapters 64, 74, 77)
Abilities and cultivation
Dao of the Staff
Tao is identified as a practitioner of the Dao of the Staff. He fights with a black metal staff in the tournament and later uses a thousand-pound pitch-black wooden staff bought at auction. He wields the weapon in battle, but his technique name, the Dao’s mechanics, and a formal Grade are unknown. By the later battle he has reached Level 121 and fights with one arm, showing both his continued cultivation and a lasting physical limitation. The wooden staff is equipment and training load, not evidence of a power-system advancement. (Chapters 64, 73, 77, 102–105, 307–314)
