Zhang Hu

Zhang Hu is Wang Lin's talkative Heng Yue roommate and first close friend in the cultivation world. His decision to kill an abusive senior sends him into exile, where coercion by Bai Zhan hardens him without erasing his loyalty to Wang Lin. (Chapters 10–27, 76–82, and 901)

Biography

Honorary disciple and friend

Zhang Hu enters Heng Yue as an honorary disciple after failing the formal tests. Three years of hauling firewood have left him hungry, overworked, and familiar with the humiliations imposed on low-status recruits. When Wang Lin is assigned to his room, Zhang Hu freely explains the sect hierarchy, the importance of innate talent, and the difference between honorary and inner disciples. His chatter is not empty exposition: he shares food, work, and practical warnings with another youth whom the sect has discarded. Their friendship therefore grows out of the same institutional hardship rather than cultivation advantage. (Chapters 10–16)

That friendship changes both lives when the disciple supervising the firewood yard raises Zhang Hu's quota to an impossible thousand pounds and threatens his family. Zhang Hu tries to stab the man; Wang Lin secretly uses Attraction Force to keep the attack from being turned back on him. Once the senior is helpless, Zhang Hu kills him with an axe. He understands immediately that the sect will execute him, loots the corpse, and gives Wang Lin a yellow talisman he considers too conspicuous to keep. Rather than implicate his friend, Zhang Hu leaves Heng Yue alone. Wang Lin later uses that talisman, and the murder becomes his first intimate lesson in how cultivators exploit weaker people. Enslavement and reunion

Nearly a decade later, Zhang Hu has reached only the third layer of Qi Condensation and serves Bai Zhan, a disciple of Old Man Jimo. This is not a voluntary apprenticeship. Bai Zhan poisons Zhang Hu, controls his survival, and forces him to collect mortal blood for a cruel cultivation method. When Wang Lin encounters them, Zhang Hu first pretends not to know his old friend, trying to prevent Bai Zhan from marking Wang as another target. He then places himself between them when Bai Zhan attacks. Wang Lin kills Bai Zhan and breaks the poison's hold, while Zhang Hu uses the blood essence gathered from the dead guards to stabilize his own cultivation. (Chapters 76–78)

Freedom has not restored the uncomplicated boy from Heng Yue. Zhang Hu is ready to kill witnesses because he has learned that information can bring Old Man Jimo's revenge; Wang Lin instead erases their memories. Even so, Zhang Hu remains generous toward Wang. He guides him to Teng Family City, pays their entry and lodging costs, proposes an even division of any profit from spirit ginseng, and guards the room while Wang refines a flying sword. His experience also lets him recognize that Wang's sudden movement is a rare teleportation-like ability rather than ordinary speed. (Chapters 78–80)

Separation and legacy

Old Man Jimo learns of Bai Zhan's death through a secret control technique and arranges retaliation through Teng Li. The resulting trap separates Zhang Hu from Wang Lin in Teng Family City. Wang escapes into the conflict that eventually destroys his own family, but he never learns Zhang Hu's fate during their lifetime together; later reflections explicitly connect the encounter with Zhang Hu to the chain of events leading to Teng Li. By Chapter 901, Zhang Hu is confirmed dead. Wang Lin finds a young woman carrying a trace of Zhang Hu's bloodline and silently gives her spirit stones, jade records, and a flying sword. That act does not retroactively make Zhang Hu a major cultivator, but it preserves the importance of an early friendship that began before Wang possessed status or fame. Later appearances of Zhang Hu's face occur among Wang Lin's memories and illusions, not as evidence that Zhang Hu survived. (Chapters 901, 1592, and 1628)

Appearance and personality

The corpus does not establish a stable physical portrait for Zhang Hu. His characterization instead comes through speech and choices: he is sociable, candid about sect life, and quick to treat Wang Lin as a companion. He is also capable of sudden lethal resolve when cornered. Exile and Bai Zhan's abuse make him more suspicious and willing to silence threats, yet he still risks himself to protect Wang Lin and shares his limited resources without bargaining for advantage. Situ Nan, observing through Wang Lin, approves of the ruthlessness Zhang shows after being freed, though the two never form a direct relationship. (Chapters 10–16, 26, and 76–80)

Abilities and cultivation

Third-layer Qi Condensation

Zhang Hu reaches the third layer of Qi Condensation by the time of his reunion with Wang Lin. The realm gives him spiritual perception, basic spell use, and the ability to travel on a magical implement, but it does not make him competitive with established cultivators. Bai Zhan can poison and command him, and Zhang depends on Wang Lin to defeat both Bai Zhan and the cultivators who later arrange the Teng Family City trap. His slow progress after years away from Heng Yue emphasizes the limits imposed by poor instruction and coercive service. (Chapters 76–82)

Fireball spell and blood essence

Zhang Hu can form and launch fireballs, using three in quick succession to kill mortal guards after Bai Zhan's death. Golden drops emerge from their blood, and he draws those drops into his body. This is the practical result of Bai Zhan's blood-gathering work: mortal blood is refined into essence that can be absorbed rather than serving as an ordinary weapon. The technique provides immediate cultivation benefit, but its operation depends on killing and harvesting others, and Zhang's use of it shows how thoroughly Bai Zhan has forced him into a predatory method. The corpus does not show Zhang using it against a cultivator or developing it into a higher-level art. (Chapter 78)

Practical tools and judgment

Zhang Hu travels on a golden spherical implement and understands enough about common movement arts to distinguish Wang Lin's near-instant relocation from normal speed. He can also recognize valuable talismans and spirit ginseng, arrange access to a cultivator city, and keep watch while another cultivator refines a treasure. These are survival skills rather than a named inheritance. They make him useful on the road, but they do not overcome the difference between a third-layer disciple and Core Formation-level enemies. Relationships

• Wang Lin: Zhang Hu befriends Wang Lin when both are low-status Heng Yue disciples, protects him from Bai Zhan's attention, and shares money and information after their reunion. Wang later honors that friendship by aiding Zhang Hu's descendant. (Chapters 10–11, 26, 76–82, and 901)
• Situ Nan: Situ Nan observes Zhang Hu through Wang Lin and approves of his ruthless response to danger, but the corpus does not show a direct meeting between them. (Chapters 46 and 76)
