Situ Nan

Situ Nan is the proud former second-generation Suzaku whose Nascent Soul survives inside the Heaven Defying Bead. He becomes Wang Lin's first mentor, teaching him the practical cruelty of cultivation while repeatedly risking his own survival to protect him. Their initially transactional arrangement develops into a lifelong brotherhood.

Biography

The voice inside the bead

Situ Nan lost his body after being hunted by foreign cultivators and escaped into the Heaven Defying Bead. When Wang Lin acquires the bead, Situ Nan offers knowledge and protection in exchange for help recovering. He teaches cultivation fundamentals, explains the Underworld Ascension Method and the wider cultivation world, and uses his remaining power to teleport Wang Lin away from enemies. (Chapters 47–91)

Their arrangement begins with mutual suspicion. Situ Nan needs an owner of the bead to gather the five elements and eventually reach Soul Transformation before he can be released; Wang Lin needs knowledge that the diminished Heng Yue Sect cannot provide. Situ Nan answers questions about techniques, treasures, spirit beasts, possession, and the dangers hidden in apparently ordinary terrain. His advice is not infallible—the Heaven Defying Bead changes Wang Lin's Underworld Ascension cultivation in ways even Situ Nan would not predict—but it gives Wang Lin the vocabulary to understand those changes. (Chapters 47, 82, and 87–91)

Situ Nan's emergency teleportation repeatedly saves Wang Lin from Teng Li while rapidly consuming the essence of an already bodiless Nascent Soul. He complains about the cost and urges caution, yet continues moving Wang Lin when escape is otherwise impossible. That pattern establishes the contradiction at the center of his character: he speaks as a selfish senior bargaining for a new body, but acts beyond the terms of the bargain when Wang Lin is in danger. (Chapters 81–83)

His manner is arrogant, impatient, and frequently amoral, but his loyalty becomes clear when Teng Huayuan destroys Wang Lin's family. Situ Nan spends his depleted essence to send Wang Lin into the foreign battleground, wraps the souls of Wang Lin's parents in his own Nascent Soul, and falls into a long sleep. The sacrifice allows Wang Lin to survive and gives him something of his family to preserve. (Chapters 116–119)

Protecting the parents' souls is especially costly because they are mortals with no origin souls capable of independent possession or rebirth. Situ Nan can only prevent their immediate dispersal by enclosing them with himself. Wang Lin later awakens in the spatial rift as a soul devourer knowing that Situ Nan has not died, but also that his mentor has entered a sleep from which ordinary recovery is impossible. (Chapters 118–119)

Second-generation Suzaku

While Situ Nan sleeps, Wang Lin learns that Suzaku's unmatched second-generation ruler disappeared after a battle with off-world cultivators. The details—his arrogance, strength, pursuit, and loss of body—match Situ Nan's account, establishing his earlier identity. Wang Lin's effort to reach Soul Transformation is therefore also an effort to awaken one of planet Suzaku's greatest former experts. (Chapters 393–429)

The identification changes how Wang Lin understands Situ Nan without changing how he addresses him. The former Suzaku knows the Cultivation Planet Crystal, its linked Planet Heart, and the authority by which a reigning Suzaku can destroy cultivators whose soul fragments are recorded inside. Once awake enough to speak, he warns Wang Lin that removing his soul fragment matters more than myths about using the crystal to advance the Ji Realm. (Chapters 419 and 426–429)

Situ Nan's teachings remain active long before his return. Wang Lin uses the killing spells, cold-energy methods, and survival knowledge Situ Nan left him, while his understanding of karma treats their meeting as one of the decisive causes in his life. (Chapters 393, 448, 500, and 844)

Reunion and the celestial cave

After recovering a body and cultivation, Situ Nan resumes his extravagant, confrontational life. He reunites with Wang Lin and immediately treats Wang Lin's affairs as his own, even storming other planets in an overbearing attempt to find women for his brother. Behind the bravado, he is willing to enter Qing Lin's dangerous celestial cave in search of a cure for the poison afflicting him. (Chapters 886 and 991–1012)

The reunion on planet Water Spirit demonstrates both his recovered Nirvana Cleanser strength and his lack of moderation. Situ Nan breaks through planetary defenses and threatens the ruling cultivators, only to discover that the formidable brother for whom he is selecting partners is already there. Once the comedy ends, the two drink and speak with unusual honesty about the cost of cultivation. Situ Nan admits that the Seventh Heaven poison has forced him to delay its progress through an extreme dual-cultivation method, while Wang Lin points him toward Qing Lin's cave as a possible cure. (Chapters 991–994)

Inside the cave, Situ Nan fights beside Wang Lin against the All-Seer's forces, remnant celestials, and the powers surrounding Ancient Devil Ta Jia. When Wang Lin is endangered, Situ Nan tries to reach him even while bloodied from battling an All-Seer avatar. After Qing Lin awakens, Situ Nan becomes part of the group that survives the cave and helps stabilize the Rain Celestial Realm. (Chapters 1012–1121)

His role is not that of an obedient subordinate to Qing Lin. Situ Nan enters because the awakened emperor may cure him and because Wang Lin is going, then remains because the temporary alliance becomes necessary to survive. His cry for “Little Lin” when Wang Lin is trapped by sword storms exposes the attachment usually hidden beneath mockery and boasts. (Chapters 994, 1012, and 1079)

Guardian of the Inner Realm and reincarnation

Situ Nan returns for the Inner Realm's decisive crisis. He drinks with Wang Lin before the final struggle, accompanies the massed cultivators guarding their world, and helps organize the survivors after the war. Though his goals are often expressed as pleasure and freedom, he accepts responsibility when the people around Wang Lin need protection. (Chapters 1496–1661)

The drinking scene before the cave world's truth is exposed is also a reckoning with their shared path. Wang Lin tells Situ Nan what he learned from a celestial's memories about the Inner and Outer Realms; both remember an earlier night when Wang Lin doubted whether endless danger and killing made cultivation worthwhile. Situ Nan cannot solve that question for him, but he remains one of the few people with whom Wang Lin can speak as a peer rather than as lord, disciple, or enemy. (Chapters 1646–1647)

After the cave world's inhabitants pass into the Immortal Astral Continent, Situ Nan is reborn without his old memories as Si Nan, an elderly mortal general in the country of Wu Xuan. Wang Lin finds him commanding the border army and chooses not to force his memories awake, respecting his friend's right to the new life. (Chapter 2069)

Si Nan retains the temperament of his earlier self without conscious cultivation: he is forceful, unimpressed by royal pressure, and fully at home commanding soldiers. Wang Lin is delighted that his friend has become a great general rather than the king Situ Nan once claimed he wanted to be. He leaves without turning the encounter into a recovery scene, making Situ Nan's ending a continuation rather than a reversal of his reincarnated life. (Chapter 2069)

Appearance and personality

Situ Nan appears in several bodies across the story, so no single physical description defines him. His consistent features are behavioral: an imperious voice, open contempt for restraint, a love of wine and women, and the assumption that strength justifies direct action. He calls Wang Lin “little kid” or “Little Lin” even after Wang Lin becomes one of the world's strongest cultivators. (Chapters 47, 994, and 1079)

His boasting conceals real courage and attachment. He may present assistance as convenience or appetite, but he exhausts his own soul to save Wang Lin, protects Wang Lin's parents' souls, and fights through severe injury when his brother is threatened. (Chapters 119 and 1079)

Situ Nan is also unusually honest about appetites and fear. He does not pretend his dual-cultivation method is noble, nor does he hide that the Seventh Heaven poison may kill him. His vulgarity can make him reckless toward outsiders, but with Wang Lin it often functions as a refusal to let reverence or rank replace the rough equality of their earliest conversations. (Chapters 991–994 and 1646)

Abilities and cultivation

Situ Nan's abilities span two sharply different conditions: the diminished Nascent Soul sealed in the Heaven Defying Bead and the recovered senior cultivator who later reaches Nirvana Cleanser. His early instruction gives Wang Lin methods and knowledge, but every direct intervention consumes the essence he needs to survive; after recovering a body, the same foundational arts develop into law-level finger attacks and planetary-scale divine sense.

Second-generation Suzaku and cultivation progression

Before losing his body, Situ Nan is the second-generation Suzaku and the strongest ruler remembered in planet Suzaku's history. He reaches one step into the realm beyond Ascendant and stands only half a step from the next stage, surpassing every later Suzaku described in that account. Foreign cultivators destroy his body, leaving the Nascent Soul to escape into the Heaven Defying Bead. That survival preserves knowledge and some stored essence, not his former sustainable combat output. (Chapter 419)

After Wang Lin helps him obtain a body, Situ Nan eventually recovers to Nirvana Cleanser. At that realm he can absorb and transform origin energy, spread divine sense across an entire cultivation planet, carry spell pressure in his voice, and impose an arrogant, nearly demonic domain. His planetary sweep injures weaker cultivators and lets him identify other Nirvana Cleanser presences, while the recovered body removes the immediate essence crisis that constrained his bead-bound interventions. (Chapters 426–429 and 991–992)

His final incarnation complicates rather than extends this progression. Reborn as the mortal general Si Nan, he has no recovered memories or demonstrated access to the second-generation Suzaku's cultivation. The article therefore treats the general's command ability and temperament as reincarnated continuity, not proof that Nirvana Cleanser power remains latent or available. (Chapter 2069)

Underworld Ascension Method

Situ Nan is one of the rare cultivators to survive and master the Underworld Ascension Method. The method places the practitioner near death so the body more readily absorbs Yin energy; the heartbeat slows toward cessation, and a mistake can turn the cultivated imitation of death into actual death. Progress requires gathering Yin energy and repeatedly opening the dantian, qi sea, and ancestral meridian to form cold cores. The first, fourth, and seventh layers are especially dangerous because they begin work on a new center. (Chapters 87–91)

The method's variation is extreme. Greater Yin absorption can increase power, but an uncontrolled cycle can draw in more energy than the body can contain and cause death. Situ Nan successfully cultivates exceptionally pure cold energy and teaches the framework to Wang Lin, yet the Heaven Defying Bead changes Wang Lin's results in ways Situ Nan does not predict. His transmission is therefore a foundation rather than a guarantee that student and teacher will develop identically. (Chapters 88–91 and 358)

Death, Demonic, and Underworld Fingers

Situ Nan teaches Wang Lin three killing spells: the Finger of Death, Demonic Finger, and Underworld Finger. The first two can be learned through comprehension, while the Underworld Finger is Situ Nan's own synthesis of a celestial spell and the life/death insight he gained while the Underworld Ascension Method brought him close to the underworld. It calls death aura and uses the transition between life and death as its conceptual and energetic basis. (Chapters 500 and 993)

The Underworld Finger has explicit cultivation limits. Before late Soul Transformation it can backlash before harming an enemy; mid Soul Transformation permits only limited use, and even late Soul Transformation demands caution. Ascendant cultivation is the level at which it can be used freely. After Situ Nan reaches Nirvana Cleanser and further refines it, the finger contains a trace of life borrowed from a land of death, forming an internal Yin–Yang interaction. Underworld Change then compresses that force into a more destructive follow-up capable of pursuing and driving back an injured Nirvana Cleanser opponent. (Chapters 500 and 992)

Situ Nan also refines the three finger methods into Annihilation and Annihilation Change. He condenses ambient origin energy into a rapidly rotating vortex, then repeatedly compresses it until the energy undergoes a qualitative change into the power of law. The compact vortex tears through the layered protection formation of planet Water Spirit. The demonstrated result depends on his recovered Nirvana Cleanser realm and law comprehension; it should not be projected backward onto the bodiless Nascent Soul who first teaches Wang Lin. (Chapter 991)

Nascent Soul teleportation and soul protection

Even without a body, Situ Nan can expend stored Nascent Soul essence to teleport Wang Lin away from pursuit. The method acts as an emergency escape rather than unlimited travel: repeated jumps visibly deplete him, and the final effort to send Wang Lin into the foreign battleground contributes to a sleep lasting centuries. His tactical knowledge during the chase is as important as raw movement, because he also identifies spiritual fluctuations and routes Wang Lin around dangers between jumps. (Chapters 81–83 and 116–119)

He can also wrap fragile mortal souls inside his own Nascent Soul to delay their dispersal. He uses this to preserve the souls of Wang Lin's parents after Teng Huayuan kills them. Mortals lack origin souls that can independently possess a body, so this is protective custody, not resurrection; it consumes Situ Nan's already depleted strength and cannot by itself restore their lives. (Chapters 118–119)

Suzaku authority, poison, and limits

As a former Suzaku, Situ Nan understands that the Cultivation Planet Crystal removes and stores a soul fragment from beings born on the planet. A reigning Suzaku can use the linked Planet Heart, at the cost of lifespan, to destroy recorded lives unless a cultivator surpasses Ascendant and retrieves the fragment. Situ Nan secretly sabotages and seals the system during his reign. This is institutional knowledge and prior access, not a personal instant-kill ability he continues to wield after abandoning the office. (Chapters 426–429)

The Seventh Heaven poison demonstrates a limit even after his recovery. The celestial poison fuses with the origin soul, causes three days of illusion followed by three days of dying, destroys the origin soul on the seventh day, and normally removes cultivation as soon as it enters. Situ Nan delays it by using a special pair-cultivation method with a cultivation furnace to keep the poison in its first stage, but cannot expel or cure it himself. The method buys time at an explicit ethical and personal cost; it is containment, not immunity. (Chapters 993–994)
