Joan

Joan is Margaret's childhood friend, a witch whose long life at sea permanently transforms her body and makes her an exceptional underwater explorer. (Chapter 563)

Biography

Choosing the sea despite the cost of return

Persecution and awakening drive Joan into the ocean, where continued use of her power leaves her adapted to water but unable to resume an ordinary human body or speech. She still chooses contact when Margaret's expedition enters danger and later cooperates through Camilla's mental link. After learning a few words and forming friendships in Neverwinter, Joan returns to exploration; her disappearance near the Shadow Islands leaves her latest whereabouts unresolved rather than confirming a death. (Chapters 563, 987, 1034, 1061, 1135, and 1150)

Appearance and personality

Joan has cyan scales across her cheeks, neck, limbs, and other sea-adapted features that distinguish her from human-looking witches. She is cautious around land society but affectionate toward old friends, curious, and determined to retain the freedom of the sea. (Chapters 563 and 1061)

Magic and abilities

Joan can live and travel underwater, swim with exceptional speed, and sense ocean conditions useful to exploration. Prolonged transformation has become effectively permanent and has impaired ordinary speech and life on land. Camilla's mind link helps communication but does not reverse those physical consequences. (Chapters 563, 987, 1061, and 1135)

Relationships

Margaret is Joan's childhood friend and the reason expeditions search for her with personal urgency. Camilla Dary creates a bridge for communication, while Lightning and Maggie welcome Joan into their exploratory circle. (Chapters 563, 987, 1034, and 1061)
