Cat's Claw
Cat's Claw is a First Army artilleryman whose nervous energy develops into the judgment of a veteran officer. (Chapter 502)
Biography
Learning precision under public and battlefield pressure
Cat's Claw begins among artillery crews whose jokes about gun battalions conceal the danger of handling new weapons. He learns to use standardized firing-zone booklets, converting map references into coordinated fire rather than relying on unaided sight. A public demonstration still makes him nervous, but he completes the work; by the latest reunion with Van'er and Jop, he has been promoted and can assess changing weapons as an experienced officer rather than a frightened novice. (Chapters 502, 622, 721, and 1207–1208)
Appearance and personality
No stable detailed physical portrait is established. Cat's Claw is sociable with artillery comrades and visibly nervous before public scrutiny, yet training lets him act accurately despite that anxiety. (Chapters 502 and 721)
Magic and abilities
Cat's Claw has no magic. He demonstrates artillery drill, coordinate-based fire direction, crew procedure, and later officer judgment. Accuracy depends on maps, trained teams, ammunition, and communication; his skill does not turn artillery into an individual weapon. (Chapters 622, 721, and 1207–1208)
Relationships
Van'er and Jop are Cat's Claw's long-serving artillery comrades. Their later gathering shows continuity across promotions and new weapon systems within the First Army. (Chapters 502 and 1207–1208)
