Van'er

Van'er is an artillery officer and battalion commander.

Biography

Learning to command the guns

Van'er begins as an ordinary militia recruit who trains for food and survives Border Town's early defenses. Experience with cannon crews teaches him that discipline, ammunition, range, and timing matter more than individual bravado; he carries those lessons into river combat and insists that his gunners aim carefully with scarce shells. (Chapters 81, 92, 115, 280, 500, and 502)

As commander of the Artillery Battalion, he directs demonstrations and anti-demon fire while remembering the hunger and loss that brought him into the army. Heavy casualties on the Fertile Plains test that confidence, but he continues adapting firing systems and coordinating ancient witches with modern cannon in his latest actions. (Chapters 721, 746, 869, 984, 988, 1158, and 1208–1209)

Appearance and personality

The corpus gives no stable detailed portrait of Van'er; it characterizes him through a veteran gunner's calm, pride in his battalion, and grief for soldiers under his command. His early hunger for an extra egg develops into responsibility for weapons and people. (Chapters 81, 721, 746, and 988)

Magic and abilities

Van'er has no magic. He demonstrates cannon aiming, ammunition discipline, range judgment, crew training, fuse coordination, and artillery command. Moving platforms and targets reduce accuracy, scarce shells constrain practice, and casualties show that firepower does not remove battlefield risk. (Chapters 500, 502, 721, 988, and 1208–1209)

Relationships

Iron Axe promotes and deploys Van'er's artillery, while Roland Wimbledon supplies the organization and weapons that make his advancement possible. Fellow gunner Rodney remains part of the early crew culture from which Van'er rises. (Chapters 81, 500, 869, and 1208–1209)
