Biography

A frightened succession hardens into repression

Appen receives Graycastle's ambassador while his father is gravely ill, but the church's Pure Witches turn the succession crisis into coercion. After their attack manipulates his guards and destabilizes the court, he responds to insecurity by distancing Dawn from Graycastle and pursuing witches rather than rebuilding trust. Repression and the loss of Dawn

His witch-removal policy creates victims and resistance, while his choice of a border position gives Neverwinter's agents grounds to treat him as a continuing threat.
